Ive had African cichlids,and before that South American Cichlids, 1st trip into saltwater tanks. I just bought my 1st house and fiqured,now its time for a saltwater tank. Im in the early stages. I have a 75 gallon oceanic tank thatsabout 15 yrs old. has been dry for last 3 yrs but now. Has water sand and today bought some used live rock and live sand. to go with my heater and sump and afew Korilia1400's. So i'll see how things go just ordered 50LBS of dry rock that will go in this week end or next and then its the waiting game....sorry to ramble but thats were i'm at now. I hope to have a presentable tank by christmas or soon after.

Reefcentral uses post counts as limits for a number of features. The spirit of the idea is to encourage users to participate in our community. Without active, contributing, users this site wouldn't be the wealth of information that it's become. When a new user needs to increase their post count they head to this forum and start posting: "nice", "cool", "wow", etc.. to every thread in the forum.

This does a few things. It violates the spirit of our policies. it wastes the time of every user subscribed to the thread and it wastes systems resources emailing subscription notices.

More content for a newb, I have a general question about my current weekly maintenance...

I only have some sand, minimal rock and two fish, with the sump running just a sock and skimmer. Weekly, I am doing a ~10% water change, topping off through the week with fresh water, and doing my water tests (only have a test kit for pH, Ammonia, Nitrites, and Nitrates... And also changing the sock out weekly to clean it.

My question is about the timing of doing the water change and water tests... Should I be doing my water tests before the water change, or do the water change and then the tests X amount of time after the water change? There's a ton of info in this forum on each part, but I could not find a good thread that goes over the order and timing of the different maintenance items.

Hello, I'm new! I'm Meghan,28, and live in Erie Pa. I always wanted a tank built into my livingroom wall, and so the construction began last weekend. I've never had a saltwater setup of my own, but helped take care of tanks for a few years, so wasn't terribly intimidated to tackle it. I bought a pre-owned 90gal drilled (reef) tank w a ton of hardware...never though did I or anyone else notice the condition of the glass. It holds water, and was just filthy w salt, but what appears to be a pattern accross the entire face of the tank has become my nemesis. When the light hits it, a rainbow iridescent glare beams off the glass, like an oil puddle!!! I've tried razor blades, Magic erasers, vinegar, baking soda and vinegar, and a tar/adhesive remover called Goof Off (kept away from the silicone). Nothing works, it appears to be on the outside of the glass, and tomorrow I'm filling it to see just how noticeable it is. The previous owner had it in his finished basement so there was more light in the tank than reflecting off the face of it. A new drilled 90 gal was priced at $289, and I'm thinking of everything else i'll need that I could spend that on, so any tips are appreciated. I expected this hobby would test my patience, but I was betting there'd already be water in the tank! )

I had a 60 gal for a couple years 15 years ago i am trying to make good equipment choices and want feedback so i dont have to spend and replace right away have 120 gal tank 4x2x2 and stand and am still deciding on sump, pump, powerheads, lighting, powerheads, etc and entertaining suggestions and why looking forward to learning a lot here

I'm in the process of setting up a 125 gallon fowlr with my son (he's 11). We have almost everything we need, just need to get the room painted before there's a 1400 pound object in the corner.

We've been running a 29 gallon biocube the last 18 months or so (it will become the quarantine tank in due course), I'm looking forward to the (perceived) stability of the larger water volume.

Hi, Im a newbie I do mean newbie too. My 150 g reef tank was installed last week and Im waiting on it to cycle. Not certain how long that will take as my nitrite and nitrates are fairly high my nitrite is 5 my nitrate is 15 and my ammonia is .25 with PH at 8.0 salinity is .025 so im sure i have time. But Its best to wait in the long run.
I am looking for info for good started fish and corals so when the tank is ready, i have a list built. I know I want clowns, tangs and I would prefer more small fish then large fish in all honesty. I am completely lost when it comes to corals though so I am open for suggestions on this. As well as reading material, to help me learn all i can about this journey.

I have been lurking around here for the last 4 years learning as much as I can. Kids and $ have kept me from setting anything up. But now that the youngest is getting older and I am finally making decent money I plan on a setting up a tank in the next 6 months.

I already bought a 40 breeder and a 20 long for the sump. I love the 40's dimensions and wanted something that has plenty of resources.

I won't have the tank set up for the next 3 months because I am moving to Raleigh in December, but in anticipation I will start purchasing supplies. I am also going to spend the couple weeks building DIY LED set up.

Good afternoon,

I am new to RC and new to the hobby as well! I have had 3 small freshwater tanks through the years. a 1 gallon, then 3, then 6. Nothing more than a few cheap fish and a betta of course! I've always liked fish tanks and always dreamed of having a huge marine aquarium in my home when I was kid but rarely put more thought into it than that at the time. It wasn't until I moved out of my parents house and into my own apartment that I have to space to start a larger tank. I bought a 36 gallon bow front aquarium for the intent of yet another freshwater setup. After spending some time in my LFS, Marine Warehouse, I found that I was terribly drawn into saltwater...

After saving and semi-randomly aquiring a roommate and moving to a larger two bedroom about one month ago, I still have YET to put a drop of water into my 36 gallon :/ However, his mom was nice enough to donate her 50 gallon rectangle aquarium and stand!! So, its been just about 4 months of comtemplating saltwater (and purchasing the 36 gallon tank) to now having a 50 gallon as my canvas.

Hopefully in the next few weeks, I will have saved enough to finally start satisfying my craving for a marine aquarium! I have literally consumed as much information about marine aquarium keeping over the past 4 months so as to not just dive in unknowingly and consequently run into issues. Hopefully this will be a rewarding hobby for me for years and years to come!

Well, since I've been stalking these forums for the past 10 months. I guess it's time to introduce myself start some posting. (and thanks to all here for the advance on the knowledge... I hope I can repay it soon)

I've been keeping different types of freshwater aquariums for about 8 years now. I currently have a 75 gallon cichlid tank and a peaceful 5 gallon tank with snails, shrimp, a crab, and live plants.

But, now that I'm settled into a house, it's time to get going on a reef system. Finally!

So far I've picked up a 90 gallon glass tank with most of my filtration (protein skimmer, sump / refugium set up, UV sterilizer, return pump). A couple power heads and a stand. Which is all stored in the garage currently... next up are some stand modifications while it's all dry and to get it plumbed.

I can't wait to get it up and running with live rock and live sand after the few modifications. Once it's up and cycling I can get started on my LED build!

My name is Ryan and I've been keeping freshwater fish off and on for the past 10 years. Currently I have a 40g at my house and 200 gallon at my store, both stocked primarily with African cichlids. I attempted to do a fish only saltwater tank when I was in college but being on a low budget and lack of knowledge it didn't go so well. I still have an interest in doing saltwater one day but for now I just want to read more and then decide what I'm going to do once I have a good handle on how to run a SW tank properly.

My name is Blake. I've been keeping fish now for 1 1/2 years. In that time I had an amateur planted aquarium and now currently have a 29g cichlid tank. The cichlid tank has 5 Brevis, 2 syndontis petricola catfish and an Altolamprologus calvus for anyone who was curious!

Hey everybody! I just joined Reef Central last week. I'm a n00b to the marine lifestyle. I have a recently cycled 55 gallon with two Aqueon QuietFlow filters and a Fluval Spec 2 gallon with a Male Crowntail Betta. Saving up for a sump for my 55 gallon currently.
Inhabitants of my 55 gallon are: 2 ocellaris clownfish, yellow Tang, 2 black and white striped damsels, maroon clownfish, 11 blue-legged hermit crabs, and an Emerald crab.
