Nice reactor

I have an Acrylic Guru Buddy, I think I'll have him copy one of those as It's a real nice set up!

Here is a video of my old AquaC XP Plus reactor with 1 liter of pellets in it hooked up to a MJ1200

Thanks a lot for the vids and pics. So I am about to make my order then. Should I order some MicroBacter 7 too?

I have not read of anyone dosing Microbacter 7 in conjunction with these pellets. I am not coming from any previous Zeo method or vodka dosing. Do I need to dose any bacterial supplements to get these going? Or am I just supposed to let whatever natural bacterial colonies I currently have try and establish themselves?

poolkeeper your tanks look great! Very nice aquascaping setup! Great choices in sps's as well!!!

drummer I have the same reactor as you and so far I only am using a 1/4 of the product. The pump that this reactor came with is definitely not strong enough to get ALL the EB moving. But your are right it is tall enough to allow for a large number of EB. I will eventually use the entire 1 liter but I know with my large bio load I am glad to know that I have room to place more in the reactor.

I was advised by Jon Warner to not use any bio starters simply because those companies won't say for sure what bacteria strains they use. There's plenty of bacteria to go around so I don't think it's an issue anyhow.

All done with Dry Marco rock about 6 months ago, You can't tell the difference from 9.00lb l/r now. All the SPS comes from a previous 185 gal tank which i took small frags from B4 I sold that system, Plus a few favorites that i did not sell.
Thanks for the kudos

Hey Jackson,

Where in Houston r u? I have 2/3 of a bottle u can pull from if u want to seed your pellets. There's way more than I'll need, and I figure it'll expire b4 I can use it all. I'm Up in Conroe and work in Tomball if that's anywhere close. Just PM me and lemme know.

That flow looks perfect - and thanks for not setting the video to a blareingly loud enough to make the dogs bark, and wake the old lady rendition of "Chariots of Fire". I just don't understand why everyone does that.

Speaking of loud videos....

Here's an updated video of the my NextReef SMR1 with 750 ml ecoBAK. It seems the pellets are actually tumbling better with more pellets (previously running 500 ml). I'm getting a more consistent tumble even at a slightly lower flow rate.

I have a relatively new tank (running about 2 months now). Half of the rocks are from an established tank. As of now my nitrate reading is 0 and I don't have a phosphate test yet but will get a Hanna soon. My cheato is growing pretty well and I clean my glass maybe every 4-5 days. My tank has majority of sps frags and will sps dominant. Is it too early to run solid vodka pellets?

IMO, I don't think it's ever too early.

So what happen when it's time to replace the Ecobak? Will the polymers shrink over time? Do you replace all of them or just add more?

As the pellets are consumed you just add more to top them off.

Question

Brett I have the same reactor on my 180. Started out with 500ml an using a maxijet 1200 with nice tumbling. Plan on adding another 250ml to the reactor just wondering what pump you are using as you have a nice tumble to your pellets.

Mine runs off a manifold feed by the system pump which is a Reeflo Dart. I think you'll find, if the MJ1200 is strong enough, you'll get a better tumble with more pellets. It was drastic how evenly the pellets started tumbling with 750ml vs 500ml in that reactor. I hope 1 Liter is even better.

People with the Next Reef SMR1 reactor, is the base exactly 6"? I only have enough space for 5.5". Is the material easily trimmable?

I measured it to be exactly 6". Don't know about trimming it but I think it's just white acrylic.

Brett are you using filter socks? I am and have had the EB on line for about a wk did see a small bloom and socks are clogging fast. Had to change them twice yesterday. Even went from 25micron to 100micron. Just wondering if you had experienced this.

I am not using socks. I just have the effluent of the reactor about 1" away from the skimmer pump volute. I haven't had any appreciable bacteria blooms. The water was slightly cloudy for a couple days but it could have been many different things. I did a water change and the next day the tank was crystal clear. Are you seeing a clear-ish gunk in the socks? If so, it's probably a good thing as it's all the bacteria the ecoBAK are creating. Try putting the effluent of your reactor closer to your pump and I bet it will help rid some of the excess bacteria.

After doing some reading about various biopellets, I decided to give it a try. My tank is a 29 gallon Bio-Cube. Granted, it's not the large systems a lot of you have, but since my tank consists of mostly SPS corals, I thought.... why not?

I have a Sapphire Aquatics Nano Media Reactor and a SA skimmer as well. Here's a pic of the media reactor (not my pic, btw). It fits nicely in one of the rear chambers. I have the pump adjusted so the pellets gently tumble. I can increase it more if needed.

That's always my motto... Why Not? The only thing I'd do to the reactor is remove the sponges and replace with a fine plastic mesh. Lots of DIY pellet reactors out there to look at. I think they are picking up the mesh sheets from hobby stores. Sponges are generally a no-no with pellet reactors.

Here's a small update.... 2 weeks into running ecoBAK (750 ml) and the tank is looking good. If you don't know from my build thread, the tank is a few months old but no corals until I get past the initial algae cycles. Just beat a big one but the tank is coming along. Water is crystal clear, clearer than it's ever been. NO3 and P04 are now both undetectable. Still feeding twice a day with a combination of Rod's, Mysis, Nori, etc... so feeding is moderately heavy for just 3 fish. For now, I am a believer.

Pic to attempt to show the clarity of the water - tough to do through pics, but hopefully you get the idea.

Proof positive.
