assuming your teaspoons are 1.3 cause they are heaping - this is about 102 ml when the two little fishes reactors hold 385 ml

so why 2 reactors - not a challenge but there may be a real good reason like everything you do?

Hopefully I can use less media than last time, which was 16 heaping teaspoons per reactor. Glad to see you posting again Nick. I've not come across any of your posts in quite a while

Nick, that is a perfectly reasonable question. For some reason, I always believed the Phosban Reactor was rated for 150g. Maybe because there is a huge 150 printed on the box. According to Julian, they can run on a system up to 300g (I just found this out a week ago). It has room for two 150 gram containers of Phosban.

I just cleaned out the Phosban Reactors a few days ago, and the media in both had clumped up substantially. Once it solidifies, it is useless. Running less in a reactor, I have to imagine it is less likely to turn to rock and should last longer. If I had to put all the media in the reactor, I think I'd run into that problem again, even sooner.

makes perfect sense - I am about to start of ROWAphos about 75ml for my 130 gallons of water when testing with double test salfiet at zero (as preventative maintenance)

what test kit do you use?

did you find the floss that came with that reactor to be a little to holy for the medium you are using (if it is like rowaphos or did you consider adding other floss to keep the material from escaping?

I'm using ROWAphos-like material. It was a bulk order from the For Sale forum here on RC. I use Salifert to test for phosphate. And I did add some extra floss above the porous sponge at the top of the reactor. The standard floss that comes with the reactor works fine, and I put them in as directed: one under the media and one above it. The extra finer floss I added myself goes above that, but still under that perforated screen near the top of the reactor.

Marc.... I plan on running my reactor with the Phos Ban "loose" Do you see any problems with that..?? And would the flow rate going through the reactor solve the issues with it clumping up??

Oh and when's your next braodcast going to be posted at your reefcast site...??? I'm getting a little anxious here ( )

It should have been today, but -ahem- someone has been too busy to get this one recorded. No names quiksilver need be mentioned 's fault, right?

I put the media in the reactor loose. According to Julian, he recommends opening the ballvalve weekly for a few seconds to really tumble the media and avoid the clumping. I never heard this until the day before Next Wave. He recommends a pump that is 70 to 90gph, with the media barely moving normally.

Marc, we have ours set at 60 gph right now, but the media is moving a good bit. Not like crazy, but it's definitely not just sitting there. So what should I change?

You can close the ballvalve further to reduce its tumbling. The idea is to keep the water flowing through the media while not sending any of it into the water column or out into the reef tank itself.

Marc,
This may be late, however I pm`d this thread to a local C.O.M.A.S. member that has experience with seahorses. It may take her a day or two to log on to RC.

hope that casper is ok.

Marc,

my lfs gave me this acro - the flash does not show justice to its colors - it is green with purple tips - don't know the name of it, it has nice extension and its tips are growing nicely - but that crab - I asked elsewhere and everyone replied back that it was a good guy, but I believe maybe it is shredding tissue down to white skeleton towards the base - see the circled area - maybe there is a good reason or maybe I need to reevaluate if this crab needs to come out - any advice?

Nick, that one looks acro-safe to me. SPS are tricky, and parts can bleach for no reason at all. The crab will keep the acro clean of nuisance algae, and uses the coral to keep safe from predators.

Eric, it is up. iTunes doesn't list it, but it is on the site since 2:30am today. This one is a big download (59 megs) as the show is 1:04 long. Oops.

Marc (et al) -

I just finished reading this thread...It took me 2 weeks.

Thank you very much for documenting everything so well and providing so much info about your obsession

This is a really great thread, more of a blog really.

Thanks again, and good luck with Casper. We're having Jorge A. Gomezjurado come to speak to our local club (WAMAS, we hosted MACNA last year) on the 25th. If you haven't gotten it sorted by then perhaps we could ask him about it. Have any pics of the poor guy?

Thanks,

Jamie

edit: I should explain. Jorge is a seahorse expert. He is the president of Draco Marine Aquaculture LLC. He's bringing 10 horsies to raffle
