Getting back in......

Hello All!

Been lurking and reading for a while now, time to step it up. I had a 55g FOWLR for about 5 years and took it down about 10 years ago. Job and family demands made it too difficult to manage. My youngest daughter (16) is taking Marine Biology in HS and has brought up (relentlessly pestered) me about setting the tank back up. I couldn't agree more with her!! So, we are going to make this a family project. Hopefully she gets more out of it than me.

With that short intro, WOW! How things have changed (advanced) in 10 years! Affordable LED lighting, affordable automation. This is going to exciting and I can't wait for suggestions, prods and encouragement from this forum.

My plan is to set up the 55g again, I have already tested it for leaks/cracks and its good to go. Unfortunately (from the wallet stand point) I sold off all the equipment, so I'm starting from scratch. Or maybe thats fortunate?? I'm thinking I'd like to run a sump system this time, had a canister filter last time. Would like to do custom (DIY) LED lighting, no expert but above average with electronics. Also put together a Netduino automation system for pH, Temps, lighting, salinity, calcium, nitrates, etc....

First though is to buld a stand, sold that too.....

Looking forward to learning here!!

Brad

Long time lurker, first time poster

Hello! I have been perusing the RC forums for quite some time. I finally pulled the trigger on my first reef tank. I have been into aquaria for years - I started with a 10 gallon freshwater tetra tank, and moved up to bigger freshwater tanks. We purchased a 120 gallon aquarium from a neighbor for $50, and it sat in our foyer for the better part of a year. We are finally at a point financially where we could get it going, and I couldn't be happier.

I'm currently got my tank stocked with 180 lb of Bahamas Oolite and 135 lb of live rock. I'm hoping for an eventual mixed reef. I'm looking forward to the advice I'm surely going to ask for and receive here!

New to Reef Central

Well, sort of new I mean

I've been lurking and reading the information on here for awhile now and this site has been the single best site for information that i've found.

My name is Dan Novak and I've had a 55 gallon tank for about a year now. I've definately had my ups and downs with the tank, current down being some bubble algea i'm working to get control of but alltogether i'm extremely happy with my tank. I have a mix of sps and softies but all corals are doing well currently. I have three fish as well, an ocellaris, a yellowtail damsel, and a coral beauty.

I'll post some pics eventually of my tank setup with the sump built into the wall but I want to get a handle on that darn bubble algea first.

Currently residing in Albuquerque, NM and work in project management in the call center industry.

Thanks for having me!
~Dan

New guys here, I've lurked around on various sites getting ideas for my 40g breeder I'm eventually going to get set up. Currently in the planning stages now, but hope to start work on it here in the next few months. I've been keeping freshwater for about the past 8 years now, made plenty of noobish mistakes for about the first half of that XD. Instead of my usual jumping in feet first method I've done in the past with my FW tanks I'm taking my time this time to properly plan out my upcoming reef tank.

Hello, I am just the wife

Hello, My husband has a saltwater tank and it is sort of becoming OUR saltwater tank. But as my name indicates, I am just the wife. I don't know as much about it as my husband does but I am learning as I go. I know we have a 90 gallon tank that is on the deeper side with a good protein skimmer and a sump under the tank. It is roughly 4 or 5 months old. We have mostly live rock, Texas holy rock (which is becoming live in my opinion), live substrate, LED lights (that we love by the way), three hydor power heads (one is a smaller one for a dead spot). Our water has been testing really good and my husband does water changes every week and has his own RO water machine. I just sit and stare at the tank all day and find critters to ID and other odd things and give him reports on how things are going in general lol. I swear I am obsessed with the tank. It mesmerizes me. I am here to get help and ask questions if that is ok I love the forums!

New to the hobby & to RC

Hi,

Would like to introduce myself as I'm brand new to RC and to reef tanks as well.

We've been planning for a long long time to start a reef tank (I was until lately involved in FW cichlid tanks) and now that our construction phase is getting near completion, we're actually starting to setup a 230G tank.

We're going to keep a blog about it as a build journal which can be found here

Hello

My name is Jennifer and yes I am new to the saltwater world....freshwater got a little too easy for me. Everything is new and I am learning as I go but I do read (lots) about saltwater. I come to the forums when I can't find what I am looking for during my reads or for friendly advice or suggestions to things I have questions about from my reads.

New to RC and to saltwater in general. Have kept FW tanks off and on since I was about 11. My son has prodded me into setting up a reef tank with him. Have done a lot of reading and I am starting to collect up parts to get it going.

new to RC

Hi my name is Thomas. My time in the hobby is recent. Like, about eleven months or so. I started last may with a 55 and quickly out grew that. I stepped up within two months to a 75 and that satisfied my hunger for a minute. I have recently purchased a really nice 125 tall. I bought it in january of this year. Extremely beautiful tank. I have two tomato clown fish in a beautiful green BTA, I have a sailfin tang of desjardini family. I have a banana wrasse that I call bert; because he looks like rainbow sherBERT, what else... oh yes I have a yellow bellied blue regal tang, I have a mata tang, one spot foxface, I also have a pink bigeyed squirrelfish. I recently added a moorish idol and lastly I also have a little four striped damsel in my tank. I have over two hundred cleaner hermits some turbo snails and a red scarlet hermit, I also have two cleaner shrimp in my tank and a sally light foot crab amd thre chocolate chip starfish. As far as corals go I have a tree coral a kenya tree and a small patch of leather sps. I'm really excited to have finally joined a community and it seems like I chose the right one.

Exclamation Noob here!

Hello I am Newbie here and to the hobby. I just got a pre-drilled 75 gal tank. I have decided to make this my long term project so I am planning to do everything by myself or atleast as much as i can. I hope I can find people that are willing to help me through this path of creating a little piece of Ocean.

The tank also has a built in overflow box in that overflow box is where the tank is pre-drilled one of the holes has a diameter of 1.75 inch and the other one 1.5inch. I wa wondering if these are two outlets or one is an outlet and the other one is the return pipe? any help?

Smile Stocking List. Please help!

Hi! Im a newbie at all the aquarium world, and I would love to get some of you're thoughts.
I have a 60 gallon tank complete with love rock, protein skimmer, filter, lights, everything I need to get started. Here is the stocking list I was thinking about, and I would love a second opinion.
-2 Ocellaris Clownfish
-1 Firefish
-1 Green Mandarin (once my tank has enough growth on the live rock to sustain it)
-1 Coral Beauty Angelfish
-1 Royal Gamma
-2 Yellow headed Jawfish
-1 Falco Hawkfish
-2 Six Line Wrasse

What do you think? I would love to have your opinion!

Hello RC my name is Matt i live in NJ i am very new to this, this is my first forum as well as my first time starting a marine tank. Im starting with a 29 Gallon tank. i want it to be mostly reef with mayb 4 - 5 fish. My tank will not have a sump due to space restrictions. The only items i have at this time is the 29 Gallon tank im debating between getting a Fluval 305 Canister filter or a Penguin 200 Power filter. I have an Oceanic Protein skimmer, and a heater. Im looking to start off with about 20 - 30 pounds of live rock and about 30 pounds of live sand. Like i said this is all very new to me and i have a lot of questions and will take any and all advice that i can get. Look foward to hearing from u guys. Thanks
