Observation:

I'm 6 weeks into using the pellets. After 4 weeks I turned up the pump on the pellet reactor and have noticed less algae buildup in general. It appears to me the GPH or flow thru the reactor is fairly critical.

For those not getting the desired results play with the flow. I started out slow and adjusted up.

I use the same two test devices. I tested my Nitrates with both API and Salifert and API shows 0 and Salifert about 3. My Hanna checker also reads 0.

My 1 liter of EcoBak pellets have been running for 37 days. Have you noticed any reduction in the pellet mass? Just wondering when I will need to "re-stock" the pellets.

I noticed several places have the pellets for sale now.

I have not noticed any reduction in the size of my pellets. John Warner suggested the pellets last 6-12 months. The product is so new it probably hard to know this early in their use.

From what I understand you don't replace them you simply add more as they diminish.

I took a short video of how my pellets look in my Next Reef MR1 reactor. Only the sides where the holes in the tube are, are allowing the pellets to move, the rest just sit there. I don't know what else to do! I am using a Rio 1400 and I have it all the way open. I tried to post the video, but it is an extension that is not supported here I will try again with my camera, but for now any suggestions would be great!

Thanks!

Do you have a Photobucket account? It's quick and easy to post a vid if you do.

If so I think you'd be getting plenty of flow through there. Other than that have you tried gently shaking the reactor (side to side or even twisting it around) to make sure you aren't getting clumps of pellets in there?

Tried shaking, turning upside down, twisting and still just the flow on the sides

Strange, mine will up-flow on the sides just like yours does but in between it will flow down towards the bottom plenum creating a circular pattern if that makes sense. Some people are saying you need only a tiny amount of flow through the pellets anyway so tumbling may not be necessary. I would think with that amount of flow along the sides there would be enough flow through the other areas to compensate. Maybe someone else could chime in though...

Well guys I added another 1/4 amount of the EB for a total 500ml. Phosphate is already reading 0ppm using salifert. No3 different story only a change of about 5ppm from 20ppm to 15ppm using salifert. ( will do a WC this weekend )
Keeping fingers crossed:
No algae blooms
I was at MACNA and had a chance to speak with Jon. The EB will take from 4-6 weeks to fully colonize. As we add more EB it will displace some water in the reactor which should allow the pellets to tumble better. That is what happened in my case. When I added another 250ml the EB tumbled even better in the Next Reef MR1.
BTW one of the speakers touched on skimming, GFC and pellets. He indicated that the combo was extremely beneficial. He also indicated that a taller narrower reactor was better than a shorter wider reactor. Since this was at the very end of the speakers presentation he couldn't get into showing us all his research to back up what he stated.

At the conference the EB and the Bio pellets from the other companies were definitely a topic of conversation.

How much flow are you guys running thru your Ecobak? I will need to run at least 3000 ml in my 675. I was reading somewhere where it told me to run 100 gpm per 1L thus 300 gpm thru my reactor then other place are saying 100 gpm period.

I don't know what he means by GFC. GAC is granulated activated carbon . GFO is granulated ferric oxide. GAC removes organics and with organic carbon dosing extra organics are being added so attention to export is important.. GFO removes PO4 and is often needed along with organic carbon dosing to maintain very low PO4 levels.

I wouldn't get caught up in gph/gpm with this stuff. Just get the pellets tumbling in a slow turn imo. Even people with the same reactor are getting different tumbling patterns so it's really a dial-it-in as you go kind of thing.

Mine stoped tumbling at all for about a month and when i added more i cleaned the screens, Then they started tumbling again so after several months they get cloged up if you feed heavy like i do. FYI

I'm a month into my pellets and I'm they're still tumbling. I was a previous vodka doser (sounds like something I would say at a AA meeting ) and so far, they seem to have the same effect.

Tom, I posted this question (below) in the other pellet forum but I think it got buried. Not related to the above quote, just hoping you'd see it and respond.

Tom - In case of a power outage and the reactor does go anoxic, what should one do before turning the reactor back on-line? Are there any safety precautions one should take as to not allow the hydrogen sulfide gas into the aquarium? Such as flush the reactor or rinse the pellets?

That's what I would do. I don't want that nasty crap in my aquarium.

Without flow, how long do you think it would take the reactor to go anoxic?
