Do you guys think I can get away with running LB with 250w ballast on my 48LX24DX29H? I was thinking of placing to LBs and actinics around them. Is this is a good idea or a bad one? Or do I need to work with a 400w

danthemanj how high is your tank?

My tank is 72L x 24W x 29H but I have 5 inches of sand. The LB minis are perfect. Here is a link to my tank build thread. It's got a lot of pics so it will give you some ideas:

LumenBrights Over My 180

Let me start off by saying that Mike at Reef Specialty has set the new bar for customer service in this hobby. Thanks Mike!

So here are a couple of teaser shots of my reef with 3 finished mini LumenBrights and 250w CoralVue ballasts firing 12K Reeflux bulbs. The bulbs are 14" off the water. I was surprised at how little light spill-over there was. The reflectors are mounted to my old AquaSpacelight that I gutted. The fixtures slide in the channels that the glass used to be in, making adjustments laterally very easy. Height adjustments couldn't be easier using the original cable adjustment anchors of the AquaSpacelight.

I'm not quite used to the look of the fixture yet, but it's growing on me. Kind of resembles something you would see at the tail end of the Space Shuttle and not above my reef! The light this combination of reflector, bulb and ballast produces is simply amazing. The intensity and color are perfect IMO. And better yet...less wattage than all the T5's I was using!

Thanks for all the great info in this thread,

Luis

an411,

I know you will be very happy with these lights. Also, if Mike hasn't already told you...cut your photo period in half and increase it slowly over the next several weeks.
Better safe than sorry, especially coming from pc's and T5's.

Enjoy!

What are some of the methods for hanging these reflectors in a canopy?

once i got them I see how I can hang them. I do have a question what do you think about the distance from the bottom of the bulb to the water surface being roughly 11 inches? the tank is 48x24x24 and with mounting the reflectors to the top of the canopy that is the distance that I will have. The only other option I have which I am not sure if I want to do is mount them on top of the canopy which do you think is my best option would 11 inches be fine

11inches is too short of a distance. Your best option is to suspend them from above your canopy. Like this:

I do plan on creating a shroud to cover the raw reflector when the weather breaks.

Nice Reef! I really like the way your lights turned out. Man, I hope my 180 looks half as good as yours someday.

Thanks Jeremy - Seeing your 180 lit up with the LumenBrights is what pretty much sold me on this combo. It's so good to have my shimmer back!

How's your new special fish doing. Are you going to post some pics on your thread? I want one of those soooo bad.

Luis

IRISSERVICE,

Nice installation! How do you like the LumenBrights compared to your old reflectors?

Was the hole for the mogul socket lined up between the pendant shell and the reflector? When I inserted the bulb/socket, it pushed up on the reflector a little bit.

Luis

I haven't picked him up yet. I have to find a good home for the Blochi tang first. I can't take any chances with such an expensive fish. When I do there will be shots of the special fish in my build thread.

Okay, question for you LB fans. I was thinking about getting a lumenarc for my tank but now I'm questioning if I should get a lumenbright instead. My tank is 36"w by 30"d. I was going to use one of the large lumenarcs since I figured it would cover the whole tank fairly well. But if what I'm reading here is correct, I could use an LB but hang it higher and still get the same coverage, right? The other thing is, I really liked the finished black shell on the mini pendants, but I don't see a black shell for the large size reflector on Reef Specialty's site. Does anyone know if they're going to come out with one soon? If not, do you think that one of the minis would be able to give me good coverage for that large of a footprint?

There different but i like them..

Old ones gave a wider coverage with limited height...
New ones give a more powerful light but require a lot more room in size and hight...

JRaquatics how do you have them mounted to that piece that goes across the tank? Is it just screwed to the board through the hole in the top of the reflector?

yeah I think that i am going to copy your design I think that is the best way to go about getting my lights to the height that they need to be. Hopefully tomorrow I will have them up and running and will post some pics. Getting very anxious to get these bad boys up.

Can't wait to see some pics. You will absolutely love these reflectors above your reef.
