I have a quick question about Chaetomorpha Algae. How often should I trim it back? When I got it back in Feb. it was the size of my fist. Now it is the size of a soccer or basket ball.

You can harvest out 25% or 50% at a time. Once you do, tug the rest of it apart slightly to encourage growth.

I'm sure someone in your area would love some of your cheato, so post it on your club's message board or here on the Trade/Sell forum. Even your fish store will accept it.

I produce so much that I started just composting it for the garden. I give it away when I can but if no one needs some on the compost pile it goes.

Skimmate 48 hours later

Here's the results after 48 hours. I didn't get as much skimmate as I'd hoped. But I also didn't change anything on the skimmer while it was working over the past two days, to avoid skewing my results.

I collected 550ml of skimmate in the past two days.

The neck was gunked up pretty well, so I rubbed my finger along the inside to get to good blob.

And it is ready for more. The bubbles at the top of the foam head seem to be rather large, although in the neck they are super fine.

Is there a reef club around you? Alot of them have people willing to give it away. Some people will ship it to you just for the cost of shipping.

marc, do you have any idea what you used to pull out before the mod?

Marc, I'm running an RC500 (SP4 pumps) and the bubbles have been just like that since day 1.

Same way on my Geo Mark. Seems to be working just fine

I've thought about putting a couple of the ER NWs in my pumps, but who knows. It's working way better than my beckett skimmer and there is just too much else to worry about right now

Really looking good Marc. Over half a liter on your size system is very good skimming don't you think?

Look at all the replies. What are you trying to do, split my thread?!

In the past when I had a ton of fish and fed a lot more, I'd pull out 1 to 1.5g of skimmate a day. This really isn't much by comparison, but I have 12 fish (instead of 29) and only feed once a day. I guess that would explain it.

I'm used to seeing about 1" of skimmate in the cup after 48 hours, and this time it was less. Perhaps the needlewheel has to slime over a bit to break in, like PVC plumbing does - I really don't know. I do know that the skimmate was dark and nasty, but didn't smell atrocious. I doubt I'll adjust the water level in the skimmer over the next few days, as it seems to be just about right.

I did wash my hands, and did not taste it. Crazy questions.

The cowrie is out almost daily, and I took a picture of it last night but haven't downloaded that to the computer yet.

Overall, all the corals look really good to me. Of course the newest piece, the blue tort, isn't doing well, so I moved it a bit lower in the tank. The core and base look good, but all the tips near the top are ruined. I don't know if that is fish-nipping damage, lighting damage, or water-quality damage. Or a bit of all three. The Tyree frag seems to be making a good comeback, and the A. secale (Melev's Purple Monster) looks really nice compared to before. I tried to get a picture of that one too, but it really is almost hidden behind another acro. I may have to put something under it to elevate it up and away from that coral.

The liverock I was cooking (when the Rio decided to be a WMD) looks really good, but I've still not tested for copper. I need to do that if I ever plan to use this rock.

I received an email today with a link to an Ebay auction advertising a bright blue clam. The seller was using images from my site as if it were their sellable item.

Since his phone number was included, I called him up and asked him if he had any pictures of his own of the clam, since he was using mine. He was taken aback, and when I asked him to remove my images, he said he would. 6 hours later, they were still there. I reported the ad to Ebay's Fraud division, and just now when I checked, the listing was removed.
