PVC skimmer! I love it! So is the coffee pot part of your system too? do you dose caffine?

And I didn't say I didn't fall asleep, in fact I think I slept several times before I finished.

Lyfey, i collected some nice bacteria today around my boat. I went there to do some work on my anchor windlass and while I was sitting on the bow of the boat I said to myself, Self, there is a lot of bacteria under the boat just waiting to be put in my tank. So I picked up a handful of seasquirts, pods, shrimp, crabs, jellyfish, fish, seaweed and mud (all in one handful) and after picking out the crabs, brought it home and dumped it in the tank.
Nothing like fresh gunk to make a tank healthy.
Of course all of you people with those sterile tanks are going
EEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOO

Here she is in my marina. Just look at all that pristine bacteria laden water. There were also huge stripped bass all over the place right in the marina chasing the billions of bunker.
But I just wanted tank stuff

I noticed the coffee urn as well. That's so Paul can go in there and hunker down, lock the wifey out, and be okay for a day or two.

My skimmer is in my sump. I also have a refugium in there too. The pods I added are doing very well to the point my fish almost sit and stare at my returns waiting for pods to be shot in to the display.

Paul. You literally grab some bottom there and add it to your tank? I use to do that in my fresh water start ups from local ponds, but in my reef tank?

Mud bottom there or sand. You got me thinking of running over to the canal now.

Dentist. I go tomorrow. Hate the dentist for no other reason but 3 grand here, 3 grand there, 3 grand everywhere. He must have a big boat. Or a G5. And they never finish in one day nor have afternoon appointments so you can put in a partial day at work either. Atleast the girls are cute.

No. No reef tank. Big maps of the world in front of his chairs. I enjoy looking at them. Needs Tvs.

There is no other reason to go.
As for them never finishing in one day, I will get my front tooth December 1st.

I don't collect mud from under my boat, that is real scurvy in a marina. I collect the stuff growing on the docks. It is about 6' thick and is composed of sponges, sea squirts, crabs etc.

My dentist doesn
t have a tank or even know what that is but he must have some boat. I probably supply the gas every visit I make.

8 implants at $3,000.00 each buys a lot of gas. And we think live rock costs a lot.

Thats it, I am going to ask if he can make a tooth out of live rock. Then it will only be $9.00 a pound, he could make a lot of teeth from that. Of course my mouth will look like WaterKeepers tank DSB and all

EDIT** RC doesnt like links.. I would google Algae turf scrubber and check it out.. very natural way of filtration I think.. I might give it a shot..
Doubt this link works

Paul B and Paul B groupies.. What do you guys think of the ATS idea? (Algae Turf Scrubber) Isnt that trough you are running similar to that system Paul?

Its really making me think a bit differently on how I want to build my dream system, or next system (whichever comes first) I had to move so I am now living out of a 75 gallon tank and my Dussemeiri tang is a little upset with me, hacking and slashing at me sometimes.. at least I have my own little cave with my waterproof computer

ATS

It is similar but my trough does not use any power. It is lit with waste light and fed with the outflow from the skimmer before it returns to the tank.
But the principal is the same.

I don't remember when I installed the trough, maybe 5 or 6 years ago and since then I have not had a bad algae cycle and just about no hair algae. I used to get those cycles at least once a year. Now it grows in the trough where I want it.
I have never seen another algae trough and don't know if anyone uses one. It just seemed like a good idea.

I know I complain a lot about my urchin "stealing" my corals and carrying them around but I found another culpret.
I was feeding the tank some fish eggs and baby brine and was watching the pipefish and rainsford gobies sucking down the shrimp when I saw one of my torch corals move. It moved a lot and kept moving. Now I know torch corals can't move but as I watched I saw my large 10 year old hermit plowing through behind it. He just kept shouldering it like he was Schawtzernager.
Of course he made the thing fall

My Singapore and dwarf angels love the sponges and tunicates from my dock here in Freeport.
It gets dropped in the tank along with whatever critters and crud comes off with it and my Mandarin picks at it for hours.

Adding bacteria to the tank did not cross my mind, but I did worry at first that something bad would wind up in the tank. Is there anything besides the crabs that should be picked off?
The Caprellids look pretty cool, but I'd read they are predators. What do they eat?

Paul, where is your boat docked? The answer is probably in the thread somewhere but I've only read a fraction of it. Maybe worth a trip for the few more inches.

If he tells you, then he'd have to kill you. Top secret.

I've been trying Nori for the last few days. My wifes been getting jealous so I'll have to ley her go. The fish don't seem to care for her either. Fun to pick on but not sweet enough to digest.

iamwhatiam, the stuff is very thick on City island. They have to scrape it off because it makes the docks too heavy. I collect sponges there. City Island is only a 10 minute boat ride for me but although all sorts of stuff grows on my docks, the sponge is scarce there. The other encrusting stuff is mostly sea squirts and tiny anemones which will not live in our tanks. You have to look closely for the crabs because there are loads of them and many are tiny.
If you are adding this stuff you are also adding bacteria.
Everything else on there can be added to the tank but some of those worms grow large. I never had a problem with them.
I used to freeze the stuff for my moorish Idol. One collection would last a year.
My boat is is Port Washington

These anemones also grow by the billions. They last a few weeks in my tank

I was taking people collecting in a place in Port Washington for a few years by boat but the last two times we were supposed to go, everyone cancelled the last minute so I don't do it anymore.
I just go myself

My bluestripped pipefish are again very pregnant. If I look close I can see the tiny stringy little babies stuck in his pouch under his belly.
No I can't get a picture. Those things are impossable to photograph. They are always in a cave and usually in the back of the tank chasing the baby brine.
The only thing bad about having spawning fish, is that you can hardly ever see them. I also have 4 large watchman gobies that are also always spawning but they hang around their nest all the time which is also in the back. Fire clowns too.
I am trying to get the bumblebee gobies to spawn and I don't know if they are as they hide too. I see all of these guys when I dump some baby brine in there or put one of those undersea shows on the TV.

Thanks Paul.

Being on the South shore, a boat ride to City Island is out of the question for me. Maybe a road trip some time this Fall.
No anemones here. Lots of orange, red and gray colonial tunicates, and small yellowish sponges. In summer there are loads of beautiful redish bunches of what I guess are hydroid colonies, but nothing in my tank eats them. I wish they would live in my tank.

I'm on a canal, so I can harvest a little at a time. Being new here I do not know what I'll find in winter, so I'll try freezing some in the fall.

I bought the boat near you in Seaford. It was next to this dock in Seamans Neck. There are only sponge growing there. This is my friends back yard. I drove the boat around to the Sound.

Quite a ride for a maiden voyage in a new boat.

I am just beginning to learn my way around in the bay here, but none of my neighbors know any good places to go sponge hunting. The sandbars and flats can drive you nuts. We bring a kayak along to explore the shallows and even that runs aground at times.

Yes I know, we don't have any sandbars or shallows.
Even my marina is over 10' deep

I will be going collecting on the south shore this week. I know they are collecting lookdowns, butterflies and triggers.
I keep the lookdowns for a while but they get too large and I either sell or give them away.
I could use some more "swimming" fish as opposed to hanging out behind things fish

Paul, Nice full tank shot, I love the way it looks.
What sort of butterflies and triggers do you get there?
As far as active swimming fish go, a small school of chromis would look great in your tank.

Phil
