Very interesting thread and topic. I can agree with both sides of the argument. In many cases you can get away with cheap equipment. Though in most cases I've seen and experienced, you get what you pay for. I figure I'm spending thousands and thousands on living creatures taken from their homes. What's another couple hundred dollars spent keeping them alive? I agree that the majority of the expensive bells and whistles in this hobby are not needed. Especially if you're willing to put in the extra effort on your husbandry. But when it comes to the fundamental life support systems i.e. circulation, temp control, lighting, filtration, etc. why risk the health of your livestock on something that has a bad reputation? No one should ever be rude and condescending like that. But at the same time we should be thankful for online forums like RC that allow us to hear from others who have experienced successes and failures with the equipment available to us.

Lol I'm a Analyst, we get paid ok enough to take part in the simple comforts of life. The point of the post was that I hated to see ppl push the most expensive things on new reefers. I personally almost quit the hobby when I saw the initial cost. Many ppl argue oh if you can't afford such and such then you probably won't go far in the the hobby. They mistake financial ability for what they think the best equiptment should cost. Sure....... Drilled tanks and sumps are the bare essentials for a reef as some would stress. They also tell you don't use canister filters, and sea clone skimmers are garbage. Yet I see reefers using canister filters, sea clone skimmers, and HOB overflows with excellent results. As a matter of fact one of my small frag tanks are setup this way.

Point case:

A while back on another popular reef forum I asked about the temperament of rabbit fish. The first question was about my equip...

For a while.. i was AFRAID to ask questions here. Rather than answer my question the board proceeded to dissect my my equip warn me of a million things that will apparently go wrong and then say I will kill my fish.....

Its been 2 years and other than teh obligatory algae outbreak, solved with water changes siphoning and letting the tank scycle i've yet to see 1 thing happen that they predicted.

oh.. and my rabbit fish loves his new home.
