I cured about 40 lb of the pukani (stinky) BRS rock in my new 75 gallon aquarium, with sand in the tank during curing also. The rock went in around the middle of November. I haven't detected any nitrates yet. Phosphates are now up to 0.07 ppm using a Hach Colormeter and I'm not using any GFO yet. I've been good about water changes so far; 5 gallons changed per week using 0 ppm tds RO/DI water. Long story short, I haven't had any nitrate or phosphate issues curing the rock in my new aquarium. I doubt a major water change would be required.

Well I cracked open the can for the first time last night since I started this thread and I'm happy to report that there is no longer any smell and the soupy brown water is now crystal clear. I'm going to test the water this evening before I do a water change on it just to see where the levels are.

looking for anyone else who may have had an issue with brs rock.

i got the brs fiji dry rock and put it into my tank on 2-7-11.

prior to going into the tank all i did was hot water wash it out.

cycled with 1.5 jumbo raw shrimp in tank and ammonia never got past .5

anyway, fast forward to first week of april and the below pick starts happening.

8+ weeks later tank still looks liike the pic.

a friend believes i have a heterotrophic bacteria bloom going on.

since that feeds on organics i have to assume that my rock has all kinds of junk in it.

just looking for anyone who might have had something like this as i am getting pretty discouraged.

thanks for any input.

I bought reefsaver and pukani from them and cycled my tank with it. It smelled so bad when I was filling my tank up with RO/DI water because the rocks were just sitting there. I did not rinse at all. I had to throw a bag of carbon in the sump to get the smell to go away once the tank was running.

I would definitely not add this rock to an existing tank lol.
