There is one other toxin that can be found in reef tanks especially old reef tanks with deep sand beds. Hydrogen sulfide gas can be produced in deep sand beds and when they are disturbed it can be released and when breathed in can cause minor to extreme poisoning depending on the concentrations. I have heard of several aquarists including freshwater ones who have disturbed an old tank sand bed and released the stored gas and ended up in a lot of trouble. Check out the wiki link on hydrogen sulphide.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_sulfide Exposure to lower concentrations can result in eye irritation, a sore throat and cough, nausea, shortness of breath, and fluid in the lungs. Long-term, low-level exposure may result in fatigue, loss of appetite, headaches, irritability, poor memory, and dizziness. |
