I mean your tank is ok. It's not something I expect from someone's 6th tank and being in the hobby for a long time. You're doing what all the noobs are doing like tang in a nano, two angels, and tap/not zero tds water.

this is ridiculous
the guy has a nice tank that hes proud of and he gets nid picked and people root for his reef to fail.
im passionate about the hobby but y make it so dam competitve it not like a boxing match or a sport where we win prizes or money for being better reefers

Congrats on your tank and good luck moving forward. It would appear that your proud of your efforts, nothing wrong with that.

Now I must digress. To those poking fun of the initial posters exuberance, relax, it’s nauseating. Everyone expresses themselves in different ways; your way is not all different in the grand scheme of things. Is it my way, not necessarily, but it’s yours, and that is fine! I hope you all feel more at ease with yourselves as you continue to ridicule the poster in such subtle ways. Very interesting and mature I must say. I thought this was a forum to solicit help, show off your tanks, and lay out successes and failures? Three pages, really, move on man, move on!

If you want to reply and offer help and suggestions leave out the sarcasm, provocative undertones, and tell it like it is, or at least as you believe it to be. If a man needs help, do you offer a hand, walk on by, or step on his head?

Once again, congrats and GL Bigbris1!

P.S.- Parting words of wisdom by Lao Tzu. “If you do not change direction, you may end up where your heading.”

I'm thoroughly confused...

I think the tank looks good, but definitely some poor stocking choices.

Seems a little mean... I understand he is doing things differently and probably not "correct" but there are better ways to give guidance than to make the listener mad or frustrated... Just sayin

Nice tank, you should be proud of it. Don't take it as hate, they are only concerned with the well being of your livestock. 90% of the time a set-up like yours will have problems. They are only trying to humble you for what they think is next. Good luck with your tank and don't forget there are a lot of people here that really care about this hobby.

I think more so that this set a bad example to the newer reefers. To do things right take effort and patience and not everyone want to do it. Some new guy may read this and say "stock anything I want and why buy a ro/di when I can get by." What they fail to see is the long term affect of these choices. Sure the tank will be fine for a few months but down the road it will have problems that you will constantly trying to fix. As an experience reefers, we all should thrive to learn from our mistakes and set a better example. I do not think you should break the rules and should brag about it. You can be the rule or the exception to quote a cheesy chick flick.

Here are some progression shots:

At roughly one month (before T5 lighting, pumps and skimmer):

A month later (added lighting, remora and a seio):

Now ( in the next couple of months I added ATI bulbs, 2 koralias, more sand, a few frags, a few fish & inverts, etc.)

I'll try to get some better pics when my day light comes on if I'm around.

Also, the tang is just a visitor (I think of my tank as a hospital tank for him) and will go to a new larger home once he's better.

Thanks again!

just chimming in before this bad boy gets derailed....

...Nuttin wrong with a lil harmless boasting ... but I'd be a lil gingerly with equating longevity with knowledge: I've been reefing since the 80's also, but I mention it only to contrast what I don't know against what I do know....

there is a lot to learn for most of us still and your apparent deviation from conventional wisdom highlights that ... Although to be honest, IME your tank isn't going to "trend out" well ...but speaking for myself, I do wish it well, perhaps you'll buck the trend and we'll all learn something new

...good luck

You didn't mention the butterfly in your fish list, but he's in the 2 month photo's then not in the 3-4 month photos. Did you trade it in or is it just hiding?

Thanks again for the well wishing and kind words. Just did a test on params and everything came out great. Ca & dKH were a bit low but that was before I dosed. I reckon I can bring that up over the next few weeks.

That HA tuft that was in my tank has completely disappeared! I wonder what ate it?

Also, the copperband was a bad choice seeing as to how young the tank was when I put him in but against better judgement I bought him to make the family happy. We lost him because he didn't eat.

I lost a few coral pieces (mostly acans, a blueberry gorg a sponge) when we went out of the country this summer but you can see many of the pieces that were there from the start are doing well.

I got most of my coral from Manhattan Aquariums (Unique corals) as $5-$10 frags (duncans, favia, acans, sps, etc). A few pieces I got from some old friends with great tanks on another site (zoas, purple deaths, hammers, monti cap, etc.)

The fish I got from FT or MA.

Thanks again.

While waiting for more pics of my current tank Here's a vid of me drilling my 40L with a friend. Worked out well despite the naysayers.

Most likely the tang. He really looks like he needs more food. But????

Honestly it looks like you purchased a healthy tang at least 5 months ago and NOW its in poor condition. Corals look pretty good though.

Here are some I just snapped. Last night since it was time for a WC I cleaned up the front and sides of the glass a bit. Usually I would clean the back glass too but my snails need something to eat! Also, I adjusted the setting on the camera. For some reason the caps and the yuma come out red when they are a fiery orange.

Nah, that's a different tang. He was much bigger and I got him from FT and he died shortly after. The current one we got because we missed the other one (I got it to do what I said explaining to my family that even tho he's small now he will have to go eventually) from MA.

Also, I listed only 1 firefish because I thought one had died/jumped. But this morning he came back out!

Thanks

I would have trouble boasting about a tank in which I thought I had lost three fish in 6 months while trying untraditional methods. Especially when I could tie two of the deaths directly to myself, a fish jumping and an inappropriate fish for the age of my tank. Just my $.02
