So, if you wanted to just avoid the whole cycling thing entirely and just rely on water changes, how often and how much?

Daily at least 50%. Sometimes twice daily. It's a PITA.

I'm beginning to get a better idea about why some people "unexplainably" skip the quarantine thing.

I will admit I haven't been keeping up with this thread (but have read most of it), but I just want to throw out there the fact that if you let a power filter with a sponge in it run in your cycled main display tank for a couple weeks, that will most likely take care of the ammonia problem in the QT. I don't think there is anything new about this...

This has worked fine for me for right at 6 weeks now with two clowns in QT running a "seeded" aquaclear20 filter. Ammonia levels never show, and even when I go all week without a water change, nitrates only get around 1ppm.

Of course you need to keep checking for ammonia, but I know I wouldn't be able to keep up with daily or twice daily water changes. In a 10g QT, that could burn through some serious salt. No wonder newbs blow off quarantining...

Run a filter of some sort in your cycled main tank, and then let that filter run in your QT while you have fish in it. Once fish go to main tank, chunk the filter media, and put the filter back in the main tank with new filter media until the next victim.. I mean fish purchase. Piece o cake..

I'm using a 6 gallon Fluval Edge for my quarantine. My main tank is a 28 gallon Nano Cube LED, so I won't be having any big fish. I'm a little confused about the sponge thing. I read that the sponge should be in the main tank for a week or two then transferred to the quaranteen tank. OK. Doable. Then I read that you have to keep it all clean and change the sponge daily. Wouldn't that defeat the purpose?

The Edge came with these ceramic do dads, some carbon, and a sponge. Preparing for my first victim, what part of that should go in the main tank for a while and once transferred to the quarantine tank, does it stay for the duration? My main tank hasn't even cycled yet, just seeded with some live rock today, so I have a bit of time to construct my death trap. I already know that 50% water changes on a daily basis or more wouldn't be doable for the length of time they recommend quarantining.
