That's good news re: the control port.

I've ordered a set of 3 Vegas -- looking forward to seeing them.

Honestly I'm surprised by how little info there is out there: I know these are new, but even the AI site doesn't have images of the lights on a tank, and gives only scant blurbs about functions, no downloadable pdfs of the manuals, etc.

These units are beautiful, with packaging, design, videos and a website worthy of Apple products, except for how little info they seem to provide. It's all very superficial information on the site.

That said, I ordered a set sight unseen!

That is from April of last year....Likely the AI SOLs.

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk 2.

Question for you, how are you going to mount your new Vega's inside your existing hood?

Enjoy your new Vega's,
Randy
I was told AI has the rails you can mount in the canopy.. I think you can buy them from Reefgeek. I will find out for sure tomorrow when I call them..

It's bright but for a tank with those dimensions I would probably get at least 2 for sure.. I'm thinking about installing two over a 36x30x24 tank.

Is each Vega unit roughly equivalent in output to a 250W MH like a Sol unit is?

I have a 165g bowfront: 72" long, 24" tall, 24" at its widest bowfront part, 18" wide on the sides.

Right now I'm running an Aquaspacelight 72" with 3x250 W MH and 4xPC 24W actinics. I've been waiting to pull the trigger to change to LED.

I'd like to have the capability to do SPS but right now it's mostly softies and a Galaxy coral.

I thought I might start with 3x Vega color units then expand to ? 5 in the future for SPS?

Any thoughts?
Actually I spoke with Greg from Reefgeek about my setup. I have a 233 gal tank 72x30x24 which is pretty close to what you have. He told me I should be fine with 3 depending on high you put them but I decided on 4 since I currently have 3 Stark LED's over my tank and I noticed the coverage isn't very good. I know you can't compare Stark to AI but I felt more comfortable in ordering 4 instead of 3.

Thanks for the info, Nanoreefbro! It was funny because I was wondering why you got 4 units when your username indicated a nanoreef :-)

Given I don't have any SPS right now, I'll stick the 3 units, about 10-12" above water and then expand to 4 or more later on. Can't wait to see these.

Please put some on-tank images up when you get a chance -- this seems to be a very rare thing indeed!

Thanks nanoreefbro. That's what I was thinking. I was hoping to start off with just one as I stock up my tank.

I should be getting my rail today, and the lights tomorrow. I'll be spending some time tonight taking pics so I can document the before/after, and will be posting all pics ASAP!

I wrote to AI about controlling with the Apex, and here is their response:

====
Thank you for your inquiry. At this time the Vega will not be controlled via a 3rd party controller. It is our goal to have them controlled by Apex and Profilux in the future but currently will not be able to do so. The wireless controller that we offer will allow you full function of the units though with independent control, timers, storms, sunrise, sunset, cloud simulation etc. We will also have more information on the AI Director controlling mechanism end of September at MACNA 2012: http://www.aquaillumination.com/director/
============

So, it looks like as shipped now, these are NOT Apex controllable. That sucks but I see they have it planned for the future, so at least the capability exists. I hope that won't be vaporware. I ordered the wireless controller anyhow.

Did you catch on the Advanced Aquarist review....They are shipping with a different LED combination that has been depicted in all the literature. They are shipping with 2 reds and 2 greens in each unit. I thinkt hat is a great idea, but I am really surprised they would make a change like that without telling anyone.

No, I didn't catch that - good to see that you were paying attention! :-) So is that a good thing that they tweaked it to include two reds and two greens? I'm slightly worried now that reducing the royal blue by four (instead of two originally spec'ed) is going to drop the PAR even more from the Blue model. I'm sure AI had good reason to make the change, but I guess we'll see!

I don't see why you don't. They have worked out fine for a number of people now.

I'm hoping to be a day or two away from that. My lights come in today, but I still have to figure out a way to mount them on top of my canopy (with the lights shining down a hole in the top). I took all sorts of "before" macros and FTSes, so I'll definitely be posting lots of pics soon!
