Thanks Chris!
I was wondering if you have any insight as to what's different about the new bulb and if it looks the same. Are there any ballast recommendations like the old one?

From my experience, old bulb + magnetic ballast = new bulb + electronic ballast.
The new bulb had lost all kind of blue tint with a magnetic, so I switched to electronic. |

Hey Chris, I finally got my hands on the new version. Emailed you regarding the difference. Would love to know what's different and what ballasts are recommended.

Where did you find the bulbs?

reef geek
http://www.reefgeek.com/150w-20000k-...d-rdm0001.html on my electronic ballast, the light is similar to the Phoenix except it appears slightly more cool blue where the phoenix is a little warmer white. The Radium seemed to make a few of the corals pop a little more than the Phoenix. I prefer the Radium, but the Phoenix is a super close alternative. I can't find my M80 ballast so I can compare electronic vs magnetic. I think I saw someone post that the new Radium runs at a lower wattage than the old one so it probably won't seem as different since it doesn't need to be overdriven to hit 100%

With an M80 ballast, you lose the blue tint and it becomes more like a 10000K. It also looks brighter. (I went electronics to get back the blue tint)

Thanks Geraud. I figured something like that would happen. How does it compare to the old style?

My old style had been used for too long (14 months or so) and was suffering from "blips" due to the chiller or AC coming on interfering with the magnetic ballast. So my old bulb was actually very low in terms of luminosity compared to its prime.
As a result I was not able to really see how much the new bulb made a difference in terms of punch. In terms of color rendition: they look the same (according to my white balance settings on old pictures ;-) ). |

That is excellent to know. Less power, no special ballast, same color. Hopefully par hasn't fallen too much.
Someone posted somewhere in response to my desiring a 250w DE Radium that it was in the works. That is a mean rumor if it's not actually true. I don't see anyone working to develop anything new for MH, but I'd love a 250w DE Radium.

little off topic, but has anyone compared an Ushio 20k 150 watt to the Radium?

I have the new style 150w Radium and was looking for a nipple to orientate it the right way, but seems like it doesn't have one. Is there a right way to install the new style bulb into the fixture?

Hi, I just looked at how I installed mine. Since it is fairly symmetrical, no real need to worry about the installation part. Unlike the older model it can rotate freely.

So how are these new style Radiums on electronic ballast holding up? Are those using them happy with them?

My experience is limited to one year of the old style, and a year of the new style, that I have replaced recently.
Nothing to complain about: corals are growing fast (mostly Acropora in my case) and the colors are nice. The only thing I noticed is that my new bulb appeared to be brighter than the one it replaced. They had been purchased at the same time. (both were the new kind obviously). I am not sure if that is expected of new bulbs (I thought the "burn time" was just a matter of colors) |

I don't have experience with the old style, but I'm loving the new style on HQI, just the right amount of blue, not too much like a Phoenix but not to little like a reeflux 12k.
