A mini fridge just won't work. Don't waste your time or money.

It will take more than 2000 BTU to change your tank temp by 1 deg F. So about 7000 BTU to get your system to 79.5 F

Most mini fridge are rated at about 150-300 BTU however duty cycle of about 30% meaning it can only pull out about 50-70 BTU an hour

50-70 BTU an hour when you need 7000 just will not work.

Not only it won't work, you'll be replacing fried compressors every 2-4 days depending on manufacturing quality.

I like the idea of creating a heat sink inside the mini fridge rather than using tubing. Maybe something like a sealed glass jug plumbed like a reactor.

I will agree that it won't be nearly as efficient as a chiller, but like someone said before, a drop of only a few degrees would help.

It will not drop your tank even 0.5 deg.

Not even half a degree.

If you're lucky, it will drop it maybe 1/4 a degree.

I'm an aerospace engineer, and just did the math, if that helps. Just trying to save you time and hassle.

Sorry I don't have input on your original question.

I've seen a lot of tricks to keep heat IN tanks, I would imagine that it would help your sitch too. Thinks like wrapping the sump plumbing with insulation, and putting padding or Mylar or something around the sump where it doesn't need to be pretty. So that whatever chiller you make isn't working any harder than it has to.

The thing I'd worry about isn't keeping it cold most of the time, but a failure could go bad really fast. I wonder if there's a cheaper kind of alarm you could set up. Like how people can setup their controllers to text them of something goes wrong but just for temp. Also, if it's too risky to run your ac when you go out, how is a diy tank chiller gonna be ok?

@onvious, good catch on the brass fitting. You mightve saved this guys tank.

Let's start from scratch. What temperature is the tank stay at when the AC is operating? Worst case... how warm does it get when the AC is turned off overnight?

Forgive my lack of knowledge about what might be available in Iraq. Your post cut off... Would it be possible to acquire and run a window AC unit safely?

IMO there is nothing wrong with 81 or 82.5. I assumed the temp would be much higher. I wouldn't worry about lowering it. At the most, I would blow fans over the display tank's and/or sump's surface to maximize evaporation to get it as cool as possible.
