zelie_dad (or anyone else) - What kind of return pump do you have on your 40B? Is the overflow noisy since I doubt that you're running anywhere close 1600gph through your 40b.
I'm looking to do the same thing, but I'm worried that if I get the 16" 1600gph model, that it will be noisy since I only plan to run about 3-400gph through my 40B

I'm probably running about that through a 12 inch model and it's really quiet. I think you should be able to run lower flow rates and still be quiet, just may be a little harder to tune in. It definitely took me a while to hit the sweet spot |

Do you have a 40B? Do you think you have enough surface skimming with the 12"? I wonder if they could make the inner part wider if I asked...haha.

My DIY ghost overflow design

Sorry, I forgot to mention I have an old-style Oceanic 30g cube - about 20 inches wide so different dimensions but close to same volume as a 40 breeder. As far as surface skimming, I think it does a fair job. I had an old homemade box with a weir style that was smaller and did a better job at surface skimming, but it was loud and I always worried about fish going over. Anything with teeth will be worse than a weir. They are really flexible with modifications so that would definitely be a possibility. I asked them to make the bulkheads in the outer box bigger (after I ordered, no less) and they did it without a moments hesitation. I would definitely ask them. Had a really positive experience ordering from them. |

I don't know how to scale your drawings are but your overflow is really high on the tank meaning it looks like your water level would be about 1/2" from the rim of the tank. You would just about flood it on start up of the System.
