I gotta say... I agree. Usually, Sanjay doesnt strike that nerve, but these past 5 days I have spent in DC, and while there I read a print-out of the article to take in all the details...

I remember a conversation with him a few months ago in his lighting update thread where I asked him for comparative numbers of PAR and PUR, or if there was a way to list PARs of all the bulbs from only 400-500nm (the blue ranges), which most corals seem to prefer (despite what Dana Riddle's article found, more research also mentioned in Sanjay's article mentioned another test I know of where a red LED induced photo-inhibition, and a blue one of equal power did not). I was looking at methods to explain how for some people, switching to a slightly dimmer, yet much bluer bulb can give better results like I has for me sometimes because the amount of blue light seems to matter more. His response was that the PUR of most bulbs in most cases is the same as the PAR proportionally.... go see for yourself, its in that update thread!

Now, with these LED's... he goes and pulls the 180 that I was talking about back then and states that even though the PAR of this fixture does not compare to the PAR of a 20,000K (and a weak one at that), that the PUR is more and so that is what counts...

Its Sanjay after all, so Im not going to get too bent out of shape... but WT%$!@$#$!!!~! man? Lol.

Hey, you took 5 days of reading of the article and did not even bother to see who wrote it

I did not write that article. !!! So quit putting words in my mouth.

To get PUR you need to know the coral's absorption curve. I was given one b a researcher for some favid type coral. You take the absorption curve and multiply it with the PAR curve to get PUR. Based on the curve that was given to me.. it basically showed that MH lamps with higher PAR also had higher PUR.

Sanjay,

So... do you have any early feelings about these lights. I was told you took a demo home to check them out. Are corals growing under LED and are the colors good?

I'm curious as to why they chose an XM 20,000K 250 watt bulb to use as a comp. It tests towards the bottom ( http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...hreadid=624185 ) no matter which ballast is used.

Oh, duh, errrrr...... sorry Sanjay, all those $100 bottles of champagne I was guzzling down left me 'hazy' for 4 of those 5 days...lol. And, in my defense, I left the cover/intro page in the printer so I really never knew... I thought you were doing testing on one of those as well, werent you? I will aim my comments towards Dana from now on though... sorry.

Yes, I have one of the 24" fixtures. My testing has been slowed down considerably this summer due to international travel, having my testing area torn up and stuff moved for the new tank to get installed and the basement mods.

I still need to run some tests on it, so I did not want to put it on my tank yet.

From the prelimiary results I have so far, I think it will be fine for smaller tanks - LPS and softie tanks for sure will be fine with it. SPS will grow up towards the top with this light.

I am planning a major rehaul of my testing rig to allow me to test T5, VHO and other forms of lightng. So things are rather slow on the testing front.

Thats exactly why they used it mayoboy.

To be able to say that it performs similar to a 250w MH, when thats obviously not true for most bulbs.

(that 250w SE also had a totally unneeded glass shield covering it, so subtract 15% or so from the XM numbers)

www.energy.gov

Search for Solid State Lighting and you will find a lot more info there on how good this technology really is - and how it will replace incandescent.

The fact that there is a product available that can compete on some level with halide lighting while solid-state lighting is basically in it's infancy should be a testiment to how good it will be in the coming years.

Here's a link to an article showing the government's support to replace all types of lighting with SSL : http://www.energy.gov/news/3710.htm
