Wow, looks like two different companies are trying to come up with the most expensive powerhead on the market!
Does anybody make something cheap that produces a lot of flow? I don't need the bells and whistles.

The VorTech consumes between 15 to 40 watts of energy depending on operational speed. The VorTech video is probably one of the best marketing videos I've seen. Reminded me of the TV show Home Improvement, More power! I'm surprised it wasn't made by Binford. Does my tank need one, no but it sure looks cool.

I first purchased 2 6000 streams with the multicontroller for my 90 gallon, BB set up. I felt that with the streams aimed at the front center wasn't enough flow for my sps dominate tank. So i purchased the 6100 transformers. The flow is now awsome.
(Just get the 6100's you won't be sorry) |

I have two 6100s with the controller on my 180 and sometimes I wish I had more flow.
The controller is the best thing with the setup I think. Without the controller they are just giant powerheads. But with the controller you have something that can provide three different wave paterns. Not just on and off either, but low power to high power so the water flow changes. And then the light sensor so at night when the light is no longer hitting the sensor the Tunze Streams switch to low flow mode. Love the food timer also and I think that is something the Vortech controller will not have, but have to wait and find out. It is just hearsay at this point. Customer support from Roger at Tunze is excellant also. Another thing to consider. Not saying the support for the Vortech's are bad or anything. I have no idea since I don't have them. Just saying from past experience that the Tunze support has been excellant from Roger. I have the magnet holders for the Tunze and do slide them around sometimes. I don't think you are supposed to, but they do have these little plastic things against the glass, so you can slide them a little. |

In my 120 display, I have FIVE SEIO 1500's along with SIX MaxiJet 1200's (1 with the MaxiJet Stream Mod, 2 with Hydor rotators), and a MAG 18 for the return (LifeReef double overflow - 1600 GPH).
I need to join a powerhead support group...help me...

hey pitstop.. don't mean to divert the thread, but quick question (if you want to keep on topic you can pm me..). your gallery pics look great, wondering on one of your tanks, you had a copper-banded butterfly with a crocea clam in the same tank? did that work for you, as i was thinking of a CBB but worried about my clam..

Hey Pitstop, Just checked out your gallery. Nice pics! Your tanks look great!. I hardly noticed all the powerheads.
Are they all on at the same time? Or on a timer? Where was the mag18 returns? Have you tried building the swirler-stein thingy? Put your Seios or Mjs on it. Some people are even putting more than one ph on the swirler. All you need now is a Aquaclear, Tunze, and a Vortech to complete the powerhead collection.

1SickReefer - Why yes, the corners are powerhead-dominated reef structures ;-) I will take updated photos showing the placement of them and post to this thread soon...
otterpop510 - Copperband and crocea DID NOT MIX WELL AT ALL! The copperband found the clam within days and started in on it - relentlessly - so the CBB had to go... smells like fish - All of the PH's are on 24/7 - no timers (except for the lights of course!) The MAG 18 is in the sump below the display tank - straight up and over the side - the output points straight down behind one side of the reef structure - the flow blasts the bottom of the tank behind the rock work - provided great water movement behind the rocks - I used to use SCWD's, loc-line splitters, extenders, etc. - removed all of that for a stright pipe up and over the side - i will take a pic of my sump - very simple set up. The whole point of this thread was for me to decide what to get in order to reduce the # of PH's in my display - TUNZE or VORTECH, I am afraid that since my tank is only 4x2x2, I might not gain the benefits the stream or vortech - seems like they need long tanks for their full potential.... Nevertheless, I am eye-balling TUNZE 2x6100 plus controller...
