I prefer a 14k look and the 16k version works for me. I think the 16k has more blue hued leds than the 10k, but don't take my word for it. My full intensity is A 70 B 80.

Well,
here's some 1 month feed-back on the Maxspect 43.5" 16000 unit. very sleek design, colors really do (did) pop until one of the 2 modules failed, leaving it with only 6 of 13 LEDs running. Marine Depot is shipping out a replacement unit - highly recommend them for support and service, as this unit was only running for 1 month. only complaint, besides the obvious - that it failed - is the screen to view the program settings is very small and hard to read. can't be my eyes - had cataracts fixed a year ago. |

I just got my razor today but I am a little confused on a lighting schedule. This is what I am looking to acheive
Dawn/dusk ramping up and down. Blue actinic moonlight all night or most of the night Tank comes on @ 10 and goes off @10 or 11 PM I like a whiter look, not too blue except at night. I want to avoid the "disco ball look" I also need to start intensity lower to acclimate my corals ( all softies) What % should I increase the intensity per week, and up to what percent intensity should I keep the light set at once the corals are acclimated? Any help is appreciated |

^^^ this is my schedule:
1- 730 a: 0 b: 0 2- 1030 a: 0 b: 0 3- 1230 a: 20 b: 30 4- 1730 a: 60 b: 70 5- 2230 a: 65 b: 75 6- 1130 a: 01 b: 02 I just restarted my tank and only have 1 zoas and 2 fishes. The light is mounted. I'm planning of increasing the numbers per week of increments of 5 per each channel, 'til I get 80 and 100. Planning of keeping a mixed reef. If you want moonlights, you need to set #6 to a:0 b:1 and #1 a:0 b: 1. I'm using two points to have the light completely off some point of the day. So far, i'm really liking this light and just works for my tank.

Glad to see that this thread is still alive. I am getting a Maxspect this friday and have a question. I am getting the 20.5" 120 used. Is this the same model that you guys are running or is the one on Marine Depot now an upgraded unit?

Can someone give me some setting guidelines on the 160w 27" fixture, mounted on the "legs" over a 40b.
Sps dominated tank, and I like a bluer look. I have been using the following for 3 months and I'm not real happy with coral color or growth, although aesthetically the light and settings look great. Light timer on at 9:30 1 10:00 A0% B1% 2 11:00 A35% B55% 3 12:30 A55% B80% 4 19:30 A55% B80% 5 21:00 A35% B55% 6 22:00 A0% B1% Light timer off at 22:30 I have a moon light module so I turn the lights completely off from 22:30 until 9:30 and let the lunar moonlights do their thing. I am in the market for the 120 degree lenses as I do have some shadows on each end of my tank, however they are on back order. Thanks Dave |

^^^ bump up the numbers. Maybe make it 80 and 100 for your peak time. I haven't put much SPS in my tank, so I can't comment on that. My zoas are doing great

New Maxspect razor r420r 22 inch 120w 16,000k on 29 Gal.
This picture is taken pretty late in the evening, but I really like my new light. I have had it for four days on my 6 month old 29 gallon. Added my first frags same day so it just got real. LOL Be interested in hearing more about people's set-points. I got the oddest advice from the manager where I purchased the light. He told me to start these new frags to a coral-less tank at 5%. That can't be right. These frags were under the exact same light in the store so why would he suggest that? My girlfriend thinks it's because he overlooked that I had no coral or no serious reef light to acclimate the light too. I did not take the advice, and have my max set point for a couple hours at 45% white 55% blue. The new frog spawn's and zoanthids seem to be doing fine, but set tomorrow with an increased max to 60% W/65% B. Any advice would be helpful.

How high off the water are people running these lights?
If I get one of these units, I'm going to put on the 120 optics, and have it mounted around 8" off the water inside a canopy. But I keep hearing rumors of new versions coming out, so I may hold off until I see what comes down the tracks. |

I've had mine for about a week now and I'm using the legs it came with, 8" I think. Still using the manual mode til I get around to messing with the auto feature. Instead of shocking with 5% increase a week, I'm doing 1% a day. I started at 30% and I'm up to 36% as of this morning. Having only a 29 gallon standard the 160w 16k is way more then enough for anything you may want to keep. I've noticed also that I have no shadows on the sides due to the extra led puck. I'll probably only max it out at about 60% I'm guessing until I move up to a bigger tank, but that was the whole reason for buying the 160w over the 120w.
Right now at 36% blue and white everything seems to be happy. Acro and birdsnest up top, monti plate and zoas in the middle, and frogspawn and kenya tree on the bottom near the sand (one on each side of the tank in the front corners). Last edited by AdamNC; 07/27/2014 at 03:37 PM. |

Yeah, I found another thread where the legs were listed at 8"............so that would be perfect for me.

could someone recommend what/how many fixtures for a 220 gal 6' tank with 2 braces. Would the braces block too much light from 2 of the 160 fixtures? And would 2 of these be enough or do i need to do 3 of the 120s

If you're set on LEDs, 3xHydra56 or 3xRadions would be a better option than 5x27" Rzr fixtures or 2x43.5" Rzr fixtures. It's more cost effective, you'll have more control and you'll get deeper penetration (and more coverage compared to the 2x43.5" option). If not set on LEDs, I'd go with a 5' T5 fixture with LED supplementation. Halides would be great if supplemented with LEDs as well, but it's just more heat and energy consumption. Bottom line, there's more than one way to light a tank and I don't think these fixtures will provide you with what you're looking for.

I'm undecided on replacing 3x 250W Radiums on the 240.

Could someone with a 20.5 120watt fixture please measure the distance of the mounting lugs for the wire hanger kit(long ways). I'm building a DIY hanger frame and cant manage to find this info anywhere.
TIA, Chris

I use to run Radiums over a tank that shared the same water volume with the tank that I have a Maxspect over. My opinion would be to keep the Radiums and add royal blue LED supplementation (Reefbrites are good all in one option, RapidLED are a good DIY option).
I experimented growing the same pieces under both lights and I thought most SPS grew better under the Radiums. But some pieces looked better under the Halides and some looked better under the Maxspect. LPS always looked better under the LEDs, but I had similar growth issues. I ultimately switched out the Radium for a Hydra52. Happy with the energy savings, no bulb replacement and no heat issues (was able to take the chiller offline). Growth is alright, not as good as under Radiums, but color is just as good or better (and better than the Maxspect, IME). Hope that helps.

So don't beat me up too bad but......I have a 120w 16k and its just too warm looking for my taste. can I swap out some of the leds? if so, which should I swap? I have built cree units with just cool white and royal blue and I like that look. I think the warmth with the blue is what people refer to when they say it looks 'purple'. it's obviously not purple but more like violet to me.
