Hi guys,
I've been, running a 29 gallon FOWLR tank for about three total years. It's been a learning experience and exercise in futility to say the least, but I've become hooked. The first setup I had was several years ago, I listened to what's now an out of business LFS and ran an under gravel filter with live sand. That didn't end well, I fought constant water quality issues that killed my fish and ultimately kept me from keeping salt water fish for a long time. Fast forward to two years ago and I set up the same tank on a tight budget for my wife and kids. This time I used 25 lbs of live rock, a powerhead, and a hang on back Penguin bio wheel 200. Although I was able to keep the fish for over a year something unknown occurred and wiped out my entire stock that consisted of two clowns, a goby, peppermint shrimp, 4 small crab and a small anemone. I never did determine what caused the last failure, all my levels at the time checked out but it was heartbreaking. I'm now looking into setting up a 75 gallon tank, and either using my old 29 as a sump with refugium and skimmer. This time I hope the extra size helps to buffer any problems. I really hope to have more success with the proper equipment this time around. I would love to eventually pick up some coral but I've been too afraid to so far. |

Hello everyone, I am from Germany, 40 years old and just starting over with reefkeeping (once had a 80g fowler tank for a while, but with no real motivation in my office ). In Germany most do fresh water tanks, this is where I come from (i used to grow Malawi perchs in a 150g tank and some smaller ones but had to stop this some years ago due to medical issues. Now for reefkeeping i just bought a used 300 g tank with some technical stuff that could further be used. I just finished my DIY tank stand (using RocketEngineers plans). I plan to do a lot of DIY (like LED lighting, programming an arduino ph / temp / KH /light etc controller, a sump and some other stuff ), hoping to find some help here and probably help some others on the long run. Please excuse my sometimes strange sounding english :-) All the best ... Dominique

Another person hooked on this Reefer madness
Hello,
Please allow me to introduce to you my aquarium (I would share a picture if I could) I just switched to a 90 gallon from a 60 only after having the 60 set up for 3 months. This hobby is absolutely addictive! 😆 I have had freshwater aquariums for many years, picked up a 60 gallon tank and stand with the intentions on increasing the size of my freshwater. After looking at several different saltwater fish and coral just decided that I would really like to have a saltwater aquarium, so the hobby began. I have been trying to figure out how to upload a picture from my phone, but it is just not working for me. I know nothing about uploading from a url.. When I try to upload from the attachment, it fails every time. |

Hi, I'm Pete, from close to London, UK. I've been keeping salt tanks for 20 years, mainly fish for the first few years, gradualy progressing to soft corals and eventually, perhaps the last 5 years, SPS.
I'm very interested in the technical aspects of keeping a reef tank, both equipment and chemistry. I have a scientific education but in physics which is not that applicable to biology! I only have a 200 litre tank and no space for sump in the current house, so I'm a bit limited as to what I can do. I recently restarted my system because of a couple of years of neglect (down to other commitments), and have gone BB, ULN and I am interested in maybe going partial zeovit, or similar as I have a few theories about zeo that I hope to discuss here sometime. Cheers! |

Hey all,
I'm from New Hampshire (New England, in the Northeastern US and I'm just starting up a small FOWLR tank that I'm hoping to expand into a mini reef in the future. I've kept malawi cichlids for a while and I'm just getting my bearings in the saltwater world. My new saltwater tank is a 36 gallon bowfront. I work in information security as an engineer and penetration tester and when I was younger I taught middle school biology. The aquaria hobby seems to be a perfect mixture of my interests in engineering and biology. I hope to learn as much as I can from all of you! Thanks! |

Hello everyone. Not new to the site. I usually just come here for reference and have only posted a few times.
I'm from the Cincinnati area. I have a 75 gallon that I have been cycling for almost a year now. I actually just added my first fish 2 days ago so the only livestock that I have is a 4" lawnmower blenny, a peppermint shrimp, a few blue leg hermits, and a bunch of snails. I have a little less than 90lbs of live rock. I converted an eshopps 125 wet/dry to a makeshift refug. The inverts have been in the tank since week three of the tank setup. I have 2 reef breeders led fixtures above the tank and I want to start adding coral and fish soon. |

Hi, i work in marine science and recently have been tasked to setup 20+ aquariums now and another 20+ later this year. The first 20 has been a great experience (for a beginner!!!) and the trial and error is a good way to learn. But i have also developed an extreme appreciation for everyone out there who has a large or intricate setup and in ingenious DIY projects.
Though my current dilemma is with the heating (and heat ranges) of the aquariums and i have come across a few discussions heating ideas that have given me something to think about. But before i go any further i though i would introduce myself and read through a lot of the information on this site. |

Hey guys, my name is Grant and I got into the hobby a little over a year. I currently have a 225 reef (in-progress of setting up), 250 fowler, 120 holding tank, and (2) 40 breeders for frag/quarantine. I finally just joined the blog but have been reading a lot of the forums to learn. I became addicted to the hobby as soon as I started an jumped in head first. I think the marine life is amazing fish an coral alike and love the challenge of creating a functional tank! Now that I have progressed into a reef tank I would love a little more help specified to my situation and advice on some equipment and fish. Thanks!

I need help and im not sure exactly how to work this website. This is the first thing I can see that will allow me to type. Can someone please help?
I have a 29 gal biocube, been testing the water at my local aquarium store. They told me my tank was cycled (after 2 weeks with live rock and live sand and using stability). We added crabs and snails and some coral everything looks great and water levels are staying perfect. Ordered a pair of premium ice snowflake clown fish. I drip acclimated them for 30-45 minutes and then added them to my tank. One is swimming around and exploring, the other (male) is laying on the bottom of the tank not wanting to explore. I am worried that he might of got too stressed during shipping. any suggestions? is he going to be okay? |

Just getting into it right now and am trying to start on a nano cube. Looking to post my first salt water tank in the future when it's setup! |

I would say a decent size to start would be a 30 Gallon with a 10 gallon sump. that would be a basic start. This way you can have a various assortment of LPS as well as 2 or 3 fish.

Guess I'm new here again, so I'll post. Been into Reefs on and off since the late 90's. I sold my last tank back in 04 or so. Looking to get back into it again, so I'm researching mostly.

hello
Hi, I am new to this forum. I am a thirty year vet of fish keeping. I have done almost every aspect of fish keeping, from maintenance, collection, to coral fragging. I usually stalk from the shadows, but decided to come into the light. At the moment, I have a 14 gallon biocube mini reef and a 75 gallon reef.

Hello! My name is Kyle and I hail from Corpus Christi, TX. I'm just beginning my adventures in reef tanks. Currently I have a 40g breeder tank with w/d filter that is running freshwater for a leak test. I am piecing everything together slowly and keeping an eye on this forum for guidance. I'm excited to get the tank up and running and the learning that comes with it!!
