Hello foks. My name is Mike and I am new to saltwater tanks. I have decades of fresh water experience, most recently a 100 gal cichlid tank which I broke down and sold last summer. 3 weeks ago I started a 29gal nano reef tank which is cycling very nicely with a combination of live and dry rock, 2 clowns, a damsel, 1 long tentacle anemone, a couple of small blue hermits, a few small snails, a turbo snail and an emerald crab. 2"-3" sand. I have a 24" HOB refugium. LEDS on the display and the refugium. Two pumps on a wavemaker to keep things moving. The site has been very useful in my research, so thank you. The avatar is a hitchkicker in i discovered in my refugium and I am concerned it may be a medusa worm, so I'll start a new thread to help with the ID and disposal (if recommended). |

So I have been a member since January 2012 but have just set up my first reef tank last week The thread is here. So a little about me, I am finishing up my senior year and have had a freshwater planted setup since early middle school. My first reef, which I have been wanting for a loooong time, is currently cycling.

New to reef keeping
Hi, my name is Ryan. My girlfriend, Kate, and I have started our first reef tank. We are quickly becoming obsessed with the hobby 😄👍. We have a 29 gallon BioCube with the following inside:
Fish: 2 clown, 1 watchman goby, 1 bicolored blenny,1 anemone (can't remember the species name). Cleanup: 1 pencil urchin, 3 turbo snails, 1 sally light foot crab, 1 emerald crab, 1 Peppermint shrimp, 6 hermit crabs, 10 dwarf hermit crabs, 6 algae snails. Equipment: Coralife BioCube 29 gallons, Lights (Coralife 10,000K/36 Watt White and 36 Watt Actinic Blue, stock lighting, on for 8 hours a day), Fluval Sea powerhead 425 gallon/hour (turns on and off for 30 min intervals), Coralife BioCube Mini ultraviolet sterilizer. Other: 20 lbs live sand, 25 lbs live rock. Our tank seems to be doing well. Temp and water parameters staying at normal, except our nitrite is a little high, but we have started dosing with a stabilizer (1 cap full/day). We hope to start adding soft corals in the next few weeks. We will also be adding a Coralife BioCube protein skimmer next week. Excited to be involved in this new hobby and want to achieve optimal results, so any tips or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks much! |

Hi all, ive been lurking this forum for a while, just thought i would finally introduce myself. i have been keeping aquariums for about 23 years, since i was a little kid. i kept fresh water tanks as a youth and moved to marine FOWLR set ups. i loved keeping lions and puffers but took a break from the hobby for a few years when my life got super busy but now im back in and getting into my first reef set up.
im hoping to get some answers to my many questions, and also hoping to contribute as well. |

I stumbled across this forum while looking for information about my new aquarium. Looks like an awesome place for info!
I'm new to this hobby but I think I've purchased something that I will enjoy for life. I am awaiting the arrival of a custom 36" deep x 30" radius corner acrylic aquarium It should arrive any day now. I have the rock, sand, salt water and all the equipment ready to go. Looking forward to interacting here and learning a lot! |

New to community and to the hobby...
Hey there...my name is Bryan. Just put together a saltwater tank for the first time and started out the life of a saltwater fish/reef enthusiast.
Hope to learn all I can cuz I don't know that much about this but what little I do know, I love it and can't wait for my tank to develop into a work of art. I'm open for any and all advice that I can get...hopefully I won't ask to many stupid questions but I'm sure that there will be a few. Here's to you, me and the things we love!!! |

The last halloween storm turned my fish into popsicle a few years back, so I finally got around to clean out the tank of horror.
It's a small 27G tank. I currently have whisper 150 air pump, sunsun 402b canister filter and a very sad single 18" T5 actinic light. Today is only day 2 for my new tank. I should have 20# live sand 16# crushed coral arriving before I head out to the LFS for a few pounds of cured live rock.... This is my first attempt at saltwater reef tank. I have been a scuba diver for years, and I know I will enjoy a reef right in my dining room |

Saved 125 Gallon
Hello everyone. I've been wanting to get a reef tank for a few years now. I saved a 125 gallon tank from an individual that thought it was pretty but too much work. 125 gallon tank with 2 built in overflows, sump with AquaC EV-180 in sump protein skimmer, BRS dual GFO & Carbon reactor, refugium (which has to be started from scratch), 1500 gph return pump, 2 returns, one Koralia 220 gph powerhead, two evolution 600 powerheads, ATI sunpower T5 HO 60" 6x80W light fixture, 3 actinic blue bulbs, 1 purple plus bulb and 2 coral plus bulbs, all ran by AquaController Apex System. There are a pair of blood orange clowns, a maroon clown, a six line wrasse and a green goby in the tank. They all look beautiful and are doing really good. The tank was so dirty that the reactor couldn't even move water through it. I've had to add an entire reef cleaner crew, emerald crabs and lots of love! I've tested the water after a week and the phosphates and nitrates are high, and that explains the hair algae! I've ordered GFO and Carbon to add to the newly cleaned reactor chambers and hope this helps the phosphate and nitrate issue. The protein skimmer had been off for months so it wasn't doing it's job to clean the tank either. It's a gorgeous tank and just needs much love.

Here we go!
Mornin' folks!
Wife bought a 45 gal aquarium for Christmas, she figured since whenever we went to the beach, I spent most of my time poking around the tide pools that I might have an interest in the hobby. So...... Started the aquarium on Dec. 26... ( I guess she was right, 30 years together kinda makes you familiar with the other) Anyway, had blue tang, royal gramma, 2pclowns, w.goby, pistol shrimp, cleaner and 2 pep shrimp, all was great until the dreaded ich!!,!,.?$@£. My assessment is came with tang(long 4 day trip in mail delayed by winter storm) I don't think helped in the stress dept. So, down a tang, gramma, other fish in hospital tank for last two weeks, and doing great playing in PVC. I decided to go the copper route, that seemed the most sure fire method. According to my interpretetion of my internet searches, I have about 6 more weeks to go with w fallow tank before reintroducing the fish. Plan to make my hospital tank into QT so I don't do this again..... Real patience test......not my strong suit. Any hints on making this effort more successful, I'm all ears..... Excited about progressing, learning and contributing where I can.... Hello all! |

Hey all
I've been hanging around this community for a little while, so thought it might be time to introduce myself. I'm Jonas and am from Denmark. I've been into saltwater for a few years and started out with a 14 gallon nano. Five months ago I transferred everything to my new drop tank. It's 30 gallon and has a 15 gallon sump with the usual bits and pieces in it. DSC_2689 by jonas_sandager, on Flickr I've been battling red turf algae hardly, which appears to be on the retreat. Now I have a good batch of cyano instead, but I keep nutrition in check and hope it will recede in time |

Never said hi
Hi everyone!
I'm Tom. I have been fish keeping for a very long time. I also spent sometime collecting fish in the pacific. I'm a newly retired wounded warrior (ten fingures ten toes=lucky). I have been lucky enough to keep several nice large commercial systems for marine collection. The largest In home I have had was total water of 100 gallons, commercial was just under 700 gallons total. I will have many questions when it comes to coral care. I'm always trying to learn the best way to house those amazing animals. I'm currently finishing my marine biology/botany degree and have been accepted into the master program. I have purposed a paper on graduating light on captive SPS coral growth patterns.Ihope my professor accepts the idea, I have already begun the planning stages so....I hope I really hope. Currently I have started building my home tank. I just moved into my new apartment. After living in houses for over a decade returning to the super small apartment life (closer to campus) feels like I'm stepping way back in life... The tank is a fluval Osaka 155 41 gallon. I plumbed it, rebuilt the cabinet, see my build thread. I would love comments, and tips. It has a 20 gallon sump and will have a 40 refugeum. Lighting will be 20k 250w radium M80 ballest with 1x 150w kessil deep ocean blue for sunrise/set. My target is SPS top/mid and rare chalices bottom. I love this site! Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Cheers! Tom I post from my IPhone. I am so sick of editing my posts ten times as spell check changes random words. Sorry. Deal with it. Hi Folks!
My Name is Jay, 36, Quantity Surveyor, from Kent in the UK. I have owned tanks all my life, and have ( almost 9 months ago now ) converted my Juwel Trigon 190 into a sumped marine aquarium with help from the threads here! So thanks to all the posters. I'm totally addicted ( Obsessed even ) with the hobby! My stock consists of; 2 Picasso clowns, 1 Xmas wrasse, 1 flame angel, 6 Azure Damzels, 1 Diamond Watchman Goby ( Who's done an amazing job on my sandbed - it's immaculate ), 1 Hawkfish ( Who spends half the time looking at me through the glass partition of my weir - he likes it in their lol ), 1 Royal Gramma, a few snails, and hermits and a couple of cleaner shrimp. I built my tank from info obtained here, and this is my first point of call for research. |

Hello!
Hello everyone, my name is Gabe and I'm completely new to the hobby as I started about 2 weeks ago!
I have a 20 gal tank, with a bunch of live rock (reef and branch) and live sand. As for livestock, I have a few turbo, narcissus, cerith, and margarita snails, along with some tiny hermit crabs, a reef lobster and an emerald crab. I believe I have also spotted a hitch hiking brittle star as well, which I have had no luck identifying. I live in Philadelphia and if anyone could refer me to the local forums or any groups they know of in the area, I would be in your debt! Thanks for the loads of information so far! |
