Alright!!! I have lowered my skimmer to 8 inches and readjusted the bubble height, and it now appears to have started making foam.
Thanks for all of your help!! |

First off I want to apologize if this has been asked already... There's only so much I can read in one night .
I'm looking at the IN 180 but I'm not sure if it will work with the clearances I have. The sump compartment I have room for a skimmer in is 9.5" deep and I only have 26.75" of clearance over all height. So if I made a 2" stand (for skimmer to run at 7.5" depth) there would only be 0.75" to remove the collection cup. Will this work?? I REALLY don't want to have to cut out a baffle and lower it . Just an interesting thought so far as the pump issues go... Seeing as there's a few machinists here (another one here too) why not check the magnet, magnet bore, shaft and well diameters? Maybe get some ideas on manufacturing consistancy. If I can make the IN 180 to fit my set up I'll be sure to post that info. Chris |

i have an in 180 and and i do not think that 3/4" would be enough to get the cup off. my cup can be a pain sometimes to get off. if i only had 3/4" it would probably be a problem. if the baffels are acrylic than i have an idea for you so you wouldnt have to cut them. drain the water level down 3-4" and draw a straight line at the level you want it to be. use a 1/2" drill bit and drill holes oles on the line. i did this on my previous sump an it worked great. as long as the drill bit is big enough there shouldnt be any cloging issues.

Well... That just sucks... lol. Yeah, the dividers are glass. Guess I'll have to keep looking at another skimmer. I really have no interest in tearing down my sump for a few days while silicone dries.
Thanks though. Chris |

I have a 180 and have found it to be the biggest pain in the butt skimmer that i have ever used. One day it works great and the next it has overflowed the top all over the place. Its in 7" of water makes a ton of bubbles but no quality skimmate. I had a coralife 65 that worked great. This is a challenge!!!!

You might be running it too wet.

briand7878 -have you adjusted the wedge pipe to lower the water volume in the skimmer? Sounds like you have the wedge pipe too closed which is causing the skimmer to skim really wet/overflow.

do you have baffles in the sump or running a ATO?
fluctuating water level will make the skimmer turn into jeckle and hyde |

Hey guys,
I got my tank setup Sunday afternoon (before the superbowl). [Knock on Wood] everything has been going wonderfully so far. This is my first setup and I must say I'm proud of it and amazed I finally have saltwater running. ANYWAYS, I love my IN100 so far. I doubt many people remember but a few pages back I had some pictures of my magnet and pinwheel. I took it apart and luckily found no shavings or wear. It has only been ~48 or so hours and its a beast as far as I can tell. During the first 24 hours (not broken in) it was fluctuating a lot even though it was producing bubbles, I had it skimming a little "wet" and it was closer to closed. Right now (I believe its broken in) I have it about halfway between open in closed. Last night I took a little video and a few pictures. I'll try and get them up sometime today. Also, during the break in and last night I kept the nipple on the bottom of the collection cup open incase of an overflow when I wasnt there. Now that it's much more constant I've plugged it up this morning .

awesome can't wait to see pics, i'm always tinkering with mine and i finally about a week found the sweet spot on mine, i had half a cup up skimmate and foam in top half starting to come out holes on lid. Kept barely moving wedge pipe and moving out flow tube so there is no back pressure and skimmer been kickin but now. Only thing is i never had a skimmer that could catch up with bioload now skimmate looks like dark tea instead of dark green crud, and i can't believe how fast coralline algae is growing now, not sure what difference a good skimmer does to tank that make coralline grow better but it is.

Has anyone gotten the 2nd generation skimmer with the revised bubble plate and pump inlet? Curious to hear thoughts (and of course see some pics)

never mind found the info
http://reefcentral.com/forums/showth...readid=1562966 the shortened bubble plate so skimmer body can be utilized better and turned pump side ways so the bubble plate could be lowered so now pump will flow straight in skimmer with no elbow. man that should make better performance, make me want to order a new 180 and put other on my 75 gallon.

Me too. I just wonder how much "better" these will make these skimmers. In theory its good -longer dwell time with the shorter BP and no back pressure on the pumps, but how much of an increase in performance will that make? Also wonder how the pump will look and whether this affects the depth these skimmers run in.

funny. i remember people complaining about the "tall bubble plates" originally. We'll see how my skimmer works for the first month. If I have any major problems maybe I'll trade in for the gen2. I can see that being a hastle and a 1/2 though.

i will wait and see how they work cause if there is any issues than they will change design again. Thats why i got away from octopus skimmers cause when you buy one than 6 months later they done come out with a better design than your bummin cause you just got old style. Plus i'm sure the foot print will change with pump laying on side installed on skimmer so footprint will be longer and i probally can't go any longer

I don't really think the lowered bubble plate will be that much of an improvement over the original. As for the pump be mounted on the side, I could see that helping the wattage, and maybe get a little more air, but this is only negligible. If I want more air I'll just buy a spare impeller and try to meshmod, or just slap a better pump on and be done w/it. I'm not going to sweat it (heck, I don't even have a tank set up yet lol)

I uploaded this video from about 30-45 mins ago. I think I may have found a sweet spot but we'll see. Sorry if the quality isn't best, It was taken from my little digital camera and the lighting in there isn't the best.. But, it gives you a better idea with my setup I hope.
I'm curious where everyone elses wedgepipe is compared to mine? Thanks, hope you enjoy it. View My Video

The skimmer (IN100) has only been running for 5 days on a cycling tank and it has some nasty gunk accumulating (dry rock and sand, cycle started from a cocktail shrimp). I'm not sure exactly what it was, but I came home from class on wednesday to find that it wasn't producing nearly as much foam as it had been in my video. I think this might be a sign that its still breaking in but who knows (any ideas?). As of now my wedgepipe is closer to "closed." I seem to get way more production in a foamhead as I get the "closed" closer to the little arrow, but not too far because water will rush up the neck and overflow into the collection cup (my first skimmer, i'm learning ). What does everyone else's wedgepipes look like (Pictures???)??
No skimmer pic, but heres a FTS I took a little earlier tonight.
