On another note, I haven't seen the bumblebees in a few days. They're so small and could be anywhere (including someone's stomach)
blennies and gobies are always taking a hike somewhere for a few days in my tank and then suddenly you see them again

no signs of carpet surfing----and my anthias were never prone to that in the first place. If it did die you are right I have a huge hermit in there that would have taken care of it

I just lost a blue green chromi that has been with me for two years. God I loved that fish. I couldn't flush him, had to have a proper burial under the cherry tree.

I have two chromis but they eat unbelievable amounts of baby brine shrimp. I have to double my hatch so the pipefish get enough. They are like vacuum cleaners.

Well for now he has to stay in my local tank with the butterflies. He will never go into my reef and he eats too much for me to keep him forever. When and if he grows a couple of inches I will give him away, maybe to a public aquarium.
I am going collecting tomorrow so he may have company.

Dang! Paul that's really awesome that you can go collect stuff yourself.

Even if I wanted to do a cold water aquarium it's illegal in this state to keep live native fish. Perfectly fine to catch them to eat though.

It's also illegal to keep native live "game" fish in NY but tropical fish are not native to NY so you can take them.

Here is some stuff I collected today along with a million pipefish which I returned to the sea, another million blowfish, which I also returned and a load of trumpet fish, needle fish, and wrasses.
We also collected five gallons of spearing, to eat. Me not the fish.
This picture was taken in my local tank where there is a regular light bulb so everything is yellow. The water also was just poured in right from the sea so it is turbid. The fish really have yellow and black stripes.

Paul, how do you collect fish? Diving? casting net? traps? Electrodes? I still think that is awesome. I used to keep native minnows in a 10 gal when I was growing up in Wyoming. There you only needed a $15 seining and trapping permit to keep any non-game species, but that was 25 years ago now.

You just walk through the water with a 25' two man scein net.

I really wanted blue claw crabs but last week they were all dying.
Where you are maybe you can collect some elephant seals, or is it penguins? Oh, north pole, seals

We're not allowed by law to keep native livestock, although I did keep a perch (when I was a kid) in my fresh water fishtank. The baxturd ate all my purchased fish in a day, so I ate him. :-)

Conor, none of these fish are native so there is no law for them. They are tropical fro the Caribbean which hitch a ride up on the Gulf Stream. They will die here in a few weeks when it gets cold.

I used to use traps or a 12' sein net in the streams and ponds growing up. It's amazing how effective a sein is. I used to catch blue gills, pumpkin seeds and green sunfish all the time, but had to throw them back as "game fish". My favorite was a type of Killifish with bold tiger stripes on it's sides. I kept a male and small harem of females for some time in that little 10 gallon.

I'm a long way from the coast here in Interior Alaska, so just freshwater fish. there are all sorts of little sculpins and other minnos that would be cool in an aquarium. Even though i'd need a heck of a chiller since most prefer water temps around 45 degrees.

Phil

I'm going to play the part of a sterile reefer.

Is that a brick I see in your aquarium? You know that can not be good for your inhabitants. Things can leach out and kill them. Probably not the yellow light you siad you're using turning the water yellow but the brick emitting toxins.

You should also know that water from the ocean has polutants in it, and is bad for the fish you took out of it. You should really filter it before you put them back in it.

Really

That used to be a whole brick but that hermit crab took up sculpting as a hobby. He is making a replica of the Pieta.

the comment "one brick short a load " comes to mind here

I've used bricks in fresh water tanks all the time with no problems or leaching--don't know if salt water makes a difference or not

Bricks are great in saltwater. They are more porous than rock, there cheap or free, readily available and it makes good conversation. It seems that if I didn't use bottles, cans, chains, bricks, asphalt or mud, you guys would have nothing to complain about.

I built a reef out of bricks before in the shape of an outdoor barbeque. My fish were not impressed
