All my photos are done with a Nikon D40x. These most recent photos were taken with EVERYTHING on auto, and the flash set to off. I am very slow in learning how to use my camera really well. I do also shoot on continuous so I don't miss anything.

Wow, how can the sailfin be so fat, while your convict looks like its dying of hunger? You might want to feed more or else that convict might not make it.

My guess is the convict is new and the sailfin has been well taken cared of for much longer. I'm sure in no time the convict will be fat and happy also.

thanks, I appreciate that as will others--tips like this can be lost in posts--this is why I greated the log book thread---so they are more opt to been seen by others there

finally I found someone with the same camera as ours. Are you using the standard lens that came with the camera?

Capn & Michika as you both use it. Apart from the mega pixels what is the difference between the D40 and the D40x? I am leaning towards the D40x but I dont care for mega pixels so dont want to buy it just for that?

Usually lenses are at the lowest of their quality wide open and stat improving as you closing till you reacha certain point called sweet point which is different from lens to lens.
Now if you take the kit lens which comes with the D40 (18-50 3.5 5.6?) this lens will not be able to be a 3.5 when at 50 mm and will instead be 5.6 it will be a 3.5 when wide open which is at 18 but still it will not give the best image quality till you close it a bit. Pro quality lenses will improve faster than non pro ones and will even offer better image quality wide open compared to their non pro glass. the 50mm 1.4 which is still a chep lens (around 350 USD) is considered to give pro quality, that is nearly as true fo rthe 50mm 1.8 which is around 100 usd too.
This is not the best image quality I get out of this lens as on this shot I was not on tripod. A tripod would have allowed a bit more stability and also I would have worked more on the camera position to be totally perpendicular tot he glass. when following a fish you end up shooting at angles no matter how hard yo utry to stay perpendicular to the glass.


Not yet successful at this. however I beileve it's all in the post processing if you don't want to buy a specific lighitng and a filter for it that I believe costs a lot. I posted some images of a lobophylia on my build thread 1-2 pages ago and believe this was the best image I ahve takes so far under actinics. also on the post your favorite item in the tank in the photography forum where I posted some pics of a favites.
Still I only have T8 Actinic fluorescents on my tank. should be adding T5 actinic by next weekl and hopefully this will help my actinic photography or at least make clear to me what s related to the intensity of lighting and what's not....

That looks like a Mimic Tang.

Yes I do use the stock lens. I keep trying to save up for a macro, but instead I keep happening to buy more clams or SPS.

For me I picked up the D40x for two reasons, 1) you can print your photos in much larger formats later on. 2) It was only $75 more then the D40. There are also a few other minor differences, you can see them all on dpreview.com if you are interested. I was debating between an Olympus DSLR and a Nikon, however it came down to the Nikon because I have small hands (literally child sized ones), and I could better use the Nikon vs. the Olympus, and even most Cannons.

I've always like the Eilbi Mimic Tangs

I just saw a tiny one a local reefer picked up the other day... It's eyes were bright yellow on the outside, and it had neon blue lining on the tail.

It definitely a beautiful fish. I need to try and coax him into posting some pictures of it. Although I would like to see some pictures as they mature, as I have heard that the orange stripes will dissapear.

All of those tangs I pictured are the same species. The only look different as juviniles. Adults all look the same.

luntiz I understand your concern about the convict. I have had the sailfin for almost a year and he is fat. I only had the convict for a month. The convict is eating pellets, flakes, and nori. He has just not fattened up yet.
