My wife and I just got back from an all nighter on the boat. I made a great breakfast and we watched the sunrise. Now we had to come home to go to a wedding. people should be shot for having weddings on a boating day. Weddings should only be allowed on rainy days. It's in a nice winery out east on the north fork on Long Island so at least I can walk to a beach and see whats under some rocks. I may have to take off my good shoes to do that though.

I really need to take a picture of the cool fish I collected this week. I gave them to a LFS because they were about 7" long and very skinny like a pipefish. They look like half pipefish and half needlenose. I know some people know what they are called as we collected some last year but I forgot. They have a tail about two thirds of the way back then another tail comes out of the center of that and goes a couple more inches.
Really cool. We found that they only eat small fish and I don't yet know if they will eat dead fish. I know I can't put them in my reef because my bumblebee gobies would be eaten like M&Ms

Unless they have the wedding at sea.

What other fish can I put in a 46 gallon hex along with a lion fish?
I converted this fresh water tank to a marine tank today for a client. Paul---it came with an underground filter---the perfect opportuinity to setup a rugf---drat--his wife did not want the three pipes showing.

ddinox, nice! Are the pillars just stacked up or is there a support pipe inside there?

Just stacked. There is now what looks like twice as much rock in there. Thanks for the compliment.

I've got a 65 gal planted freshwater planted tank that been set up for about 6 years now, and moved twice. It's pretty neglected now since I've discovered saltwater. So I've been toying with the idea of converting it to a reef. I've always thought a pillar type aquascape would be prefect for it. And yours is a good example of that.
Thanks for sharing it.

Phil

Phil. don't do it. I sold all my freshwater tanks(3) when I set up my reef tank. I regret it. I had a planted shrimp, planted American Flag fish with numerous other plant safe fish, and a planted minnow tank.

That's a beautiful tank and you'll wish you never got rid of it. I'm thinking of turning my 30 into a planted tank. My wife thought I was nuts for selling everything in the first place, especially now that I want to do it again and will have to buy all the Marpan wood and plants again. I love the natural look of aquaria. Although my tank doesn't look it right now. Give it time.

I keep scrolling up to look at your tank. Nice.

Paul. Is that what you call finger food? Or do you use them as toothpicks? Or in your case, swizzlesticks with olives. I'd like to ad some pipefish to my tank but afraid I have too much flow. Must be great fun doing all that catching of free stuff for the setup. Or just the exploring for that fact.

I found one of my yellow clown gobies in my sock yesterday covered in pods. I still haven't seen the other or the green clown either for a while.

Did I mention I acclimated a couple of Marble Mollies for my reef? Thought is they'll be as much as breeding machines as they are in my reef to feed my fish fresh food now and then.

I tore my planted tank down to make a sump for my SW tank. The planted tank was more work than a SW tank IMO

cool looking fish Paul. Shaped just like a translucent whale. To bad there's a light blue water mark of a needle nose fish there.

Paul, that's quite a catch considering that site says there native to Hawaii. I saw a bunch of them when I was snorkeling there last winter. Usually out over sandy areas in fairly open water. Often they were just inches below the surface.

ddinox, I know what you're saying. I got rid of my nano reef at home a while back and sure do miss it. But with 3 tanks at the office and 2 at home, it was always getting neglected. Same goes for my planted tank. Actually I'm considering converting the fish only freshwater 46 bow front at work to planted. Then using the 65 at home for a fish only, with some larger fish. Goramis perhaps. Here's what my planted tank looked like when I was still maintaining it well.

DDinox, they are cool ain't they? I am going to try to train them to eat other things, (maybe linguini and clams) I am going collecting this week again hopefully. It is getting colder here and much windier. We had ten people on the boat today and when you got out of the water it was cold.

Sunfishh, I gave them all to the LFS for a portion of brine shrimp. I can't feed them minnows all day. I would really like to collect more of those porcupine looking things, they are really cool

Are Fistularia commersonii found in the Med? If not, then they may not eat linguine.

Does that noodle end with an e or i.

I have no idea where they are found but I know that last week they were found on Long Island. They think they are from Hawaii and I am surprised they could afford the airfare to NY but what do I know? I doubt they flew first class though.
This stuff comes from marine boilogists who obvoiusely don't get out into the sea very often. These things probably originate in Bayone New Jersey.
Very cool wherever they came from and I will collect a bunch more this week

I saw them at Poipu beach on Kauai. Usually near the surface, but a few times just hovering just above the sand. My book says they also eat shrimp. So you might get them to eat frozen mysis.

Time is a changing. Getting cooler here on the West coast too. Had a steady cool breeze all day long that we haven't had in a good week or so. Fealt good when dry. But when climbing out of the pool this morning it was chilly like you said Paul.

Tis a shame we along LA county and south to about Newport have such horrible water conditions.

beautiful tank Phil---I agree with the others --keep it as that.
I have a 49 gal fresh water that I really set up to observe/qt fish for a few restarants I have been serving. I was going to sell it but now I'm keeping it

For the planted tank---are you running carbon dioxide?

It's expensive to conver. The 46 gal pentagon tank I just converted needed:
46 lbs of live rock
40 lbs of argonite
k4 power head
remora pro skimmer
heater
eventually because of the design they will need a pendant halide system---when they go reef.
I try to steer everyone away from a reef for 6-9 months.

I really like the reef too. If you have a sump I really don't think you need all the live rock in the display tank. I prefer the openess with the holes in the reef so the fish can swim in and out.

Besides it leaves for space for wine bottles, ashphalt, bricks etc etc which I understand give the tank longevity

Too late Capn'.

And here is my sump.

Left side

And right side

Man I love being able to post pictures, finally.

I know, some of my corals aren't where they should be. Tell that to the giant snail I have that plows into everything.

I recently dosed with REDSLIME because it was getting out of control. It's been a week and still looking pretty.

Starting to get some little algae patches that I like to see. Just got back from a local hobbiest picking up a different type of Cheato than I currently am using in my sump/fuge. Just plopped it in there. Sorry to say that infront of you quarantiners. I don't quarantine, I plop. Well I plop after acclimating. I didn't see a reason to acclimate an algae.

Oh. That's only four of the six T5s I have. Haven't seen a reason to run all six yet. There is some zipping around space between the rock there Capn'. Rockscaping ain't my better talent. Come to think of it. I don't have much talent at too much.

And if you want. You can play "can you tell the difference" by scrolling up and down on the post.
