never mind. i decided against it. the intake of the recirc pump would be too high. i like this thing too much as it is anyways. i just need to stop trying to make everything better especially when its doin this good to start with

Well after 8 days I cleaned out the whole collection cup for the first time. This was my first experience with cleaning a skimmer, it had a pretty fowl smell to it to say the least.. All I used was water from the sink to rinse off all of the loose stuff and then a few paper towels for the rest, a final rinse and I was done (only about 2-3 minutes). I turned off all power to the whole system, pulled off the collection cup off the neck and took it downstairs for the cleaning. Came back up, put the collection cup back on snuggly and everything started up perfectly. I'm pretty confident in the pump because originally there were no shavings when I took it apart, though from other peoples stories I'm still a tad nervous. I have to say I have nothing to compare this skimmer to but I love it, its simplicity and performance.

When I put the collection cup back on I realized I hadn't taken any pictures (charged my battery up and everything today), woops, next time

I joined this club today! I picked up a new 180 for my 120g. Would you guys suggest for me to break it in in a vinegar solution for a few days?

zoafan- It's really up to you, I know people that have and people that haven't. I personally didn't on my IN100, and I'd say it really only took 24-48 hours to be broken in.

Is yours a Gen2 or Gen1?

Either way I would just take apart the pump and check out the magnet and ceramic shaft. I doubt you'll have a problem, as far as I know it was just the IN100s with most if not all of the issues. I would think by now all problems should be fixed, but it wouldn't hurt to check. Keep us updated, get us some pictures when you have it setup, and WELCOME to the club!

Anyone have any problems with microbubbles getting out from the bottom of the skimmer body. I had a few microbubbles come up from my sump but now for some reason their are alot of them making it up to the display. Anyone have the same problem or an easy solution to prevent this from occuring? Thanks, my skimmer is the IN100 by the way.

Well I am not sure if it is a Gen1 or Gen2, I just picked it up today. When did the Gen2s come out? If it is a Gen1 I am going to return it for a Gen2

I have a few days before my tank gets setup so I'll run it in the sump with vinegar just so I can play with it now

. Will I get foam with vinegar?

ernordstrom, that sounds like there is a leak in the body, I don't see any other way for bubbles to appear under the skimmer.

no the body is fine its just that the exit where the water that was in the main body comes out always has bubbles in it now. It is very aggrevating. Will adding a filter sock to the output tube alleviate this problem? Has anyone else had similar results (probs?) Does everyone have the output pipe installed or do you have the output pipe removed with the 90 sideways? Thanks for any help...

I don't know if they're actually being sold yet but if not, they will be soon. They'll have a shorter bubble plate and the pump will connect directly to the body instead of having an elbow like the gen1's. Checkout the premium aquatics board here on RC for more info. I'm by no means an expert in the hobby or with any hardware (yet!), but supposedly the benefits will be very minimal if any. I really think once you see what these skimmers can do you'll forget about the gen2

Try removing the ~6" output pipe if you have it on and turning it 90 degrees so half of it is underwater.

you can see what i'm talking about with 20 seconds left (10 seconds in) the video I posted up today on this page.

Make sure the water height in the sump is 7 to 8 inches . Check the pipe that goes in the skimmer body . It only needs to be like a 1/4 to 1/2 inch into the main bubble plate chamber . It might be pushed in too far . This could be the cause of the bubbles .

Well I got my skimmer, put it in my sump with a little vinegar to break it in per the directions and the pump stopped liked working 5 minutes later lol. I unplugged it and let it sit but it still won't work.... I may be returning the entire skimmer tomorrow...

where did you order from? they may be able to give you a new pump.. it might be one of the first batches. have you taken the pump apart to look for any wear and tear or shavings of the magnet? sorry to hear about that.

why do all of you guy do the vineger it is kind of harsh

Vinegar is an excellent solvent for cleaning epoxy resin and epoxy hardener. It will even clean epoxy that is starting to harden

I don't think I had my foam head up high enough I am running it semi wet now and have alleviated most if not all of the bubbles. I have also removed the large pipe and extended the putput so I can have the water expel into my sumps foam block. This seems to work well...Thanks for all the help take care.

ernord- glad to hear things are better. Yeah I skim a little "closer to closed" as you can see in the video. It seems like most do the same as well. GET US SOME PICTURES AND/OR VIDEO!!!

Hi all,
I am not a member yet just did a live chat with Josh at pa he said that vertex will be comeing out with 2nd generation pumps to fix the impeller problems they are retooling them. Will take about 2 or 3 weeks from canada. I will be holding out till then check back with you guys when i officialy become a member

sounds good! please take pictures if you can when you receive the skimmer. I/we would like to see the new bubble plate and the direct injection from the pump
