beautiful tank Phil---I agree with the others --keep it as that. I have a 49 gal fresh water that I really set up to observe/qt fish for a few restarants I have been serving. I was going to sell it but now I'm keeping it For the planted tank---are you running carbon dioxide?
Thanks Capt. Yes, I'm running a high pressure CO2 system, thought I'm not sure it's needed with the slow growing plants I have left. At the very least I need to thin it out a bunch, it's getting pretty badly root bound. And I'd like to see my cories once in a while. I thought they were all dead for a couple months, then all 3 were out in front looking fat and happy.

I figured it'd run me about $1200 to $1500 to convert to a reef. With a tank 24" tall and only 18" deep I'd probably need to go metal halide.

Phil

Besides it leaves for space for wine bottles, ashphalt, bricks etc etc which I understand give the tank longevity
Don't forget beer cans

BumbleBees

Paul,

How are your BumbleBees doing? I haven't seen mine in a couple of weeks and suspect that they became someone's dinner.

Mine seem fine but I can't swear all five of them are still there.
They stay in the back a lot. I can see 3 of them though.

What other fish can I put in a 46 gallon hex along with a lion fish?
Scats, mono's, triggers, morays, and files. Also anything large enough that the lion won't eat. Don't forget you need to feed the lion seperately from most fish. Triggers will eat the food much faster than the lion.

The rockscaping looks okay to me---I like lots of holes for the fish to go through.

Nice shot Paul. Where do you get your salmon eggs? (probably a dumb question.)

I setup a 46 gallon pentagon reef on Saturday. I used 40 lbs of live rock taken directly from my refugium--into a bucket of tank water--into the 46gal tank with identical tank conditions. The tank has 1200 gph of flow. To-day that tank is crystal clear, with zero ammonia and nitrates.
The client is really putting the pressure on me to add a couple of clown fish.
What do you think---I doubt there will be any cycling with the way I treated the live rock????

Clowns are pretty hardy. I'd still see if he could wait till at least the weekend is over and put them in next week. If not, you've warned them and it's their money.

oh it gets better---they want a nesting clown in an anemone
I really don't think I should give into the anemone even if they are responsible---if it dies the whole tank will have to cycle and its a poor start for an enthusiatic hobbyist.
I think I will arrive with two fire gobies which will impress them enough to forget about the anemone for a little longer

That's one thing I hate about keeping a reef in the office lobby. Everyone has an uninformed opinion about what they want to see. Since I have 2 clowns and a Yellow tank, the most common request is for a "Dory" fish (Hippo Tang). Yeah, in a 50 gal, not gonna happen.

Phil

Capn, throw a clownfish in there. You got the rock from your fuge it should be fine. Tell the guy you think it's too soon so if ever anything croaks, you could blame him. It's a win win situation.
As for office reefs, I did a lot of work for Mike Bloomberg, the mayor of NY and he has spectacular, huge reefs in his offices.
He has unlimited money so a guy comes twice a week and changes the corals and some fish. I don't think anyone feeds them.

thanks Paul---I had already decided with the one clown but its still nice to be able to bounce ideas off others with expertise

Phil----they already asked for a regal tang--in a 45 gal

they said they would give it to me if it got bigger----now what am I going to do with 5 tangs in a 110gal high

If they had gone with the rugf like I had wanted them to do then I probably could have gotten away with it

I set up a 120gal for a restaurant, kind of a lease deal. Thank God they don't tell me how to stock it! I never realized how dumb most people are when it comes to marine life. The most suggested is "you should put in some really BIG fish." My favorite question is "is that saltwater?"

Okay I added
1 clown fish
1 6 line wrasse
2 fire gobies to the tank today

plus
1 cleaner shrimp
5 snails(small turbos)

but not before I installed a Remora C Pro protein skimmer and 10 more llbs of really established live rock.

That skimmer is really over rated for a 46 gal but you should see that sucker clean the water.

This client is great---he has let me build that tank like a brick **** house.
50 lbs of quality live rock
korala 4--1200 gph power head
remora c pro skimmer rated for a 120 gal tank

We're going to fill the tank up (over time )
