So I had to do a water change today...

It really helps when you have the right equipment.

Nice work on the video Marc! So are you going to raise the babies? Maybe after you finish the woodwork?

Marc,

I thought you might be interested in this. I just received my digital temperature recorders and they are very slick! But I took one with me today as I drove around town. I kept it out of the direct sunlight, but did not put it in anything (such as a thermos). Can you guess when I stopped for lunch?

The last red dot is when I stopped at McDonald's for dinner and even then the temperature got up to 115 in the car.

I linked to a smaller image here:

The larger image can be found here (it is a large file!):

I'm going to take the lead that someone else showed me today. I'm going to plant an oak tree tomorrow.

That is a nice graph. Did you try shaking it hard or dropping it a couple of times to see if it will cause a false reading? This is exactly why we have a/c in all of our vehicles in Texas!

Considering I'm currently on a graduate student salary, no I did not try to damage the expensive recorder

Seriously, I think the tags are pretty accurate at the moment. If you look at the flat section before 10am, that was when it was sitting in our upstairs office which is kept at 80, so pretty good. But I want to run a series of tests first that are non destructive and then I'll get into shaking them.

Hey I like that recorder output. I have never seen a digital recorder but I have had experience with the old mechanical wheels that go around. Well they were from a long time ago. They belonged to my . . . father, yeah my father and he let me . . . use it. Yep that's right my father had an old analog mechanical round read-out temp recorder that he let me use. ahem.

So anyway, where did you get that unit, I'd like to look into getting one.

Brian, I didn't mean drop it on the concrete, but maybe drop it on the car seat a couple of times, or wrap it in padding in a box, and drop the box like USPS or FedEx would. You know, to test gravitational fields.

Brian: can you post a link to where you got the recorder?

Jonathan,

I posted a link in the project Community Issues forum, if you had, cough cough, checked that

Mark: It was bounced around the car a little, I had to brake hard to avoid another idiot driver yesterday and it flew off the seat onto the floor, didn't seem to bother it at all. But it will be going through the shake tests probably later this week.

Cuby2k: This is where I purchased the temperature recorder:

http://www.microdaq.com/logtag/trix-8.php

They have LOTS of choices though, I just went with what would work for what I wanted to test and it was one of the cheaper ones

Brian

Don't choke! Well I don't get email notifications from the entire DIBS project...is there a way to subscribe to that section of the forum?

Thanks for the link!

I know it wasn't amazing, but it was something that was happening yesterday and I thought I'd share it.

Today when I awoke, the sound of the Tunze alarm was going off. That means one of my Stream pumps wasn't running. I flipped off the switch to that one, and tried to visually inspect the problem just by staring through the glass. Nothing obvious was seen.

So I grabbed the water and muriatic acid I had sitting on the back porch, poured some in a 6g bucket and dropped both Tunzes in the solution. (Kids, don't try this at home). First, I removed all snails that were on the pumps, putting them back in the reef. Both pumps are running in that solution, cleaning up the innards, destroying any algae and softening up the coralline. Next, I'll dissassemble & clean them in rinse water, and reinstall the flow in the reef.

Coincidentally my VorTech was off (both green and red light were on), and a snail is still inside that housing. I think the snails were trying to shut down the reef last night.

As soon as the Tunzes are in, I'll clean the VorTech.

thats what happens when you add a hundred thousand snails to your reef.

Got to love snails! I had one inside the intake of my return pump the other day. Don't ask me how he got there.

The funny thing is I'm in the mood to order another 100 snails. I was just thinking about that an hour ago. Mine seem less inclined to work for some reason.

My snails never get involved with the overflow or any equipment other than trying to hitch a ride on the Hammerhead magnet.
