sample 2

the next sample taken came right from the rock. I took a small piece of rock and brought it in a sample cup with tank water. these are the opaque white hairs that are present on the rock. Notice the complete lack of any cellular structure. Is this dead and was living at one time. It resembles GHA when you look at it but it is less than 1/4" tall and covers all the rock.
The first is at 200X, the second is 400X.

I also have water chemistry results that maybe someone could translate and explain if some of the more obscure results like potasium are good or bad. I'll post those later so as to not hijack the thread.

i have the same algae/bacteria on all rock....mine was boosted up by adding a new LED light without an acclimation.
Do we know how to control and eliminate it?

Well, we have had some of these white looking pests identified as algae and the last one appears to be a fungus to me. If so, two completely different types of pests.

A few hobbyists have reported good results using AlgaeFix Marnine where others said it did not work.

I would reduce phosphate using GFO and constantly scrub rock clean of pest. Run GAC with filter bags collecting debris. Skim wet with a good skimmer. Keep all debris out of tank.

Thanks,Cliff, i am doing exactly what you said except the algaefix. I have increased the GFO for about two month, the fuzzy stuff stopped growing, but didn't get off the rock. I hope the algaefix will help on that.

Chales, how are you doing? do you have the same problem in your tank?

Sup duke,

How's HFF?

tanks ok, it was growing on frag plus and any non organic matter. I dipped all my zoanthids/frag plugs and frag racks in a mix of MELAFIX and PIMAFIX and scrub off the racks in super hot water... don't see a lot of signs of that issue as much very little let on the frag plugs. Gonna dip them again tommorrow with the same mix for like 15-20 mins, didn't hurt the Z's and P's and Duncans.

Charles, keep me updated on Metafix and pimafix. I ordered the Algaefix to give it a try. I don't want to dip individually, i hope i can treat it in the tank. It stopped growing after mg got raised to 1800ppm.

I haven't heard of a good way to kill this type of pest.

update: I cranked up the nobs on my white / blue on my kessil so now its pretty bright and white in my tank for a couple weeks, and also running phosphate reactor, carbon... then all the sudden ( KNOCK ON WOOD ) my tank is clean as heck only area where I see some residual is in my black plastic in tank skimming overflow box. Since its black the light can't get there much.

The blurry blob might be a sponge or tunicate. I'd guess sponge.

Question Odd growth HELP

I have some white patches with vein like features I would assume it isn't bacteria but not sure there is another one within 8-10 inches from the larger one

To Reef Central

It looks like a sponge to me, but I can't be sure.
