Outstanding job on the tank! You validated allot of what I am about to do. Is there anything you would do different if you started all over again? I was thinking of building my QT tank into the side of the stand so it could be seen. Also the fuge would be nice framed in the front of the stand so you could see the activity? Any thoughts? What are your thoughts on the MH? Have you looked at it with 2 on? Would that be enough light? Once again, VERY nice job.

Hey newsalth sorry for the slow reply i have been busy with work. So far I really wouldn't do anything differently. The one thing I am deciding on now is whether to get a dosing pump to maintain calcium levels and whatnot or to go with a kalkwasser reactor and a calcium reactor type setup. It will take a bit more research until I make my decision but for now everything is working perfectly.
As for building the QT tank into the side of the stand that sounds like a good idea. The only reasons I would not do it is because once your tank is full of fish you will have an empty tank built into your stand. It can't be used to add extra volume to the system or anything because if you do need to treat with anything like cupramine it will deffinitly never be able to connect to your reef. The fuge being framed in the front of the stand is a neat idea. If I had a bigger fuge I would have done this. My 20g fuge is so packed with rubble rock and cheato now that there is not alot to look at. Also I run my fuge lights on a reverse schedule and I think it would take away from the effect the moonlights have on my tank at night. It looks amazing walking into the room in the dark to see the nightlife in the tank. I personally think the yellow window at the bottom of the tank could take away from this a bit. But like I said if it was a 40 gallon or bigger fuge it could be really neat to be able to showoff. One day I hope to use my current 125g tank as my fuge! Then ill wanna show it off haha As for the MH's, the reason I went with 4 is because I wanted to make sure I could keep anything I wanted to in my tank without any problems. I would have went with 3 but was worried about the middle one causing a shadow in the tank due to the brace in the centre of the tank. The one thing is depending where you are heat could be an issue with 4 MH's on a tank this size. It deffinitly does generate heat. Luckily I live in Canada and only have to worry about heat issues for really 2 months of the year. Hope that answers your questions! And thanks for the compliments! Always nice |

Update
Hey everyone here are some pictures of my sps rockin out. There starting to do good and im noticing growth! They picked up alot more since I added my second MP40 a couple weeks ago. Here are some pictures! O and Jacob the waterchange system works awesome. Extremely easy. The only thing I would change is my Coralife R/O unit haha. I bought it before I was into reefs and now I really want a new one with an auto shut off and a pressure pump. And higher capacity. But anyways heres the pictures! Excuse the terrible color its from my Iphone

Update!
Frags are doing great. I lost a couple due to flow problems and not dosing originally. Now I am running another vortech mp40 and dosing and testing daily and growth is increasing! Picture time. . . (forgive my Iphone)

Quarantine Videos
I have a Diamond Head Goby, Leopard Wrasse, and Copperbanded Butterfly in quarantine. These videos are from there second day in. I bought the leopard and copperband at the same time because they were both in the same display at the LFS and eating like crazy. They have started eating well for me already. At first only taking brine but already accepting mysis! Now its time too see if they will accept pellets. Enjoy!

Equipment Update
I have added a few things to my tank! I changed out coralife ro unit which was pushing about 5tds water out of it for a nice new 6 stage deluxe RODI unit from Bulk Reef Supply. I love this new unit and after using this tds free water for a few weeks I have no cyano left! Which is deffinitly a nice thing. I also started running ROX carbon and changed salt to Royal Nature. HUGE fan of this salt. I was already sick of H2Ocean leaving brown crud in my mixing bucket. Not anymore!
I also insulated my salt water storage bucket to save some energy. its in the furnace room in the basement on the concrete floor so on those -30 celcius days the heater will not run constanly. I replumbed the drain lines from my sump to incorporate a filter sock. So far I am very happy using one and am changing it out ever 3 days. I added another EB8 to my setup to incorporate some new things. I added another heater for backup as well as hooked up some dosing pumps to supplement ca and alk. I will have another update on those soon. |
