So if it is 45000 lux at 1 meter, I would assume most corals come from water deeper than 1 meter, do not need as much light as you would think. How much?-I have no idea. Does it give readings for different depths?

Sorry about the X2 post. There are tons of bulk suppliers on the net. Just do an explorer search. (LED bulk sales supplier or whatever)

found 100 for $4 on e-bay, although the S+H is $20 - is that a good deal?

Thanks Blue.

MadTown,
that's not a bad price. if it's the same I've seen on e-bay, they wont combine purchases to save on shipping. Each order will be $20 shipping. Can't buy 2 -100 LED lots for $28. They would charge $48 shipped.

There's got to be better deals out there. The roll buy sounds like it may be the way to go possibly. I'll share what I find.

Check out

http://www.lumileds.com

I got a couple of the Luxeon Stars- one blue and one white- to try for night viewing.
They are Really bright - almost too bright for moonlights.

Not sure what costs less in the long run, but you would need a lot less of these.

It looks like the luxeon stars are 20 lumens each at 10000k

I want to keep this thread a live so I will post a few qustions and share some opions.

1. I know it has been asked but has anyone put a meter on these things to see how much light we would get

hmm, I guess only one qustion, now time for the opion

Besides the heat, and power concumtion the benifits are endless. you could dim them to simulate sunrise/set, and you would not have to worry about a smoking hot ballast. the biggest benifit is you would not be mounting all that glass above your tank, it has always been a feer of one of those things breaking in my tank.

I have been pondering this also, my idea was to mount 3 or 4 in small array (not sure on colors yet) these arrays could be moved around to provide you with the best overlaping of light. and if one array failed you could just replace that one. after you seal everything up, it would be water tight and a lot safer then what we are all using now.

I don't think LED's are ready for reef lighting yet.

The Luxeon Star is rated at 20 lumen, 5500K.

Say you need 15,000 lumen - the output of a 175w MH *
You would need 750 Luxeon units.
This simple analysis is probably not exact, but I think it's in the ballpark.
Oh yeah, then consider the spectrum requirements...

20 lumen thats for 1 single luxeon star.... eg.. what is the value if the light of several Leds overlap each other... because LED's light are kind of focus... so if 2 led's light overlap each other would it measures 40 lumens at that specific spot?

I wouldn't go wider angle, you probably want as narrow of an angle as possible to "punch" as deeply into the water as you can, if you can fit about 600 LED's in there you could keep whatever corals you want, then all that needs to be seen is how much intensity is lost in deeper water.

Those are encouraging results. I would not worry about getting LEDs with a wider angle, I would just get more. Your panel works alright for the amount of LEDs that are in there! It would be interesting to see the results woit 300-400 LEDs. I really don't think 750 LEDs is unpractical at all.
