That rock looks just fine and if, as you say there was no really foul smell then you just "dodged the bullet". Keep the circulation going well and it will cycle. You might want to keep sniffing the tank over the next few days in case there is a bivalve in there that expires. You won't be able to tell if this occurs by the Ammonia test alone because you will expect to see a rise in it anyway. It'll cycle nicely with some TLC.

To all that convinced this poor new guy to keep his rock without asking for a refund, bear in mind that your great advice resulted in him keeping this rock which was sitting in a fedex bin for 5 days. Great job on advice fellas. You did real well here. Mantra indeed.

Cooking is great, but if there is a problem with shipping, that needs to be dealt with.

FYI Stinger, for future reference, I'd ask for a full refund if my rock shipment is even a single day late. We pay these people for quick shipment - if they don't get it to us in the time allotted, the shipper needs to rememdy the situation fully. Take it from a guy who has had this happen at least 3 different times with 2 shippers (DHL and fedex).

I ordered a small box of premium fiji from drfosters and it had hundreds of flies in it. They refunded the whole order via a credit.

Well, he is a client of the shipper, presumably he does all his business with the shipper, so he should be the one to raise the issue with them. The rock guy may be nice and all but you are a customer with a problem - this isn't personal, you spent good money on something, you deserve the best service possible.

This thread is the worst example of fundamentalism I've seen in the hobby. Sheesh guys, why not sell him on starboard while you are at it.

Just My OPINION, though.

Good Luck,

You'll have to trade Sean, thats his photo.

Have you checked on a refund yet? They are bringing up a good point that was forgot after all the cooking debate.

If it were ME I'd keep that rock and get some money back.
Like I had said in my first post... Put the money towards more LR to seed.

I would "cure" it with out lights for atleast 4 weeks, if not totaly dark atleast no heavy lighting. Longer would be even better. But if you do that in the tank (with the sand) your going to get a lot of detritus in the sand. Could be problematic later. IMO the best way to start a new tank is to clean the rock in a seperate tub or in the tank without the sand. Add the sand later if you want a DSB... Or just stay BB.

I think I said everything with my first response here.

Wow, Sean. I'm impressed with the way you handled yourself. Too bad others in this thread do not have that kind of grace.

I don't get it. Is it fundamentalist to advise someone to cure their rock outside their tank? He's planning on curing his rock with skimming in his tank. What would it hurt to do so outside the tank if possible and do water changes until there's not a lot of crud accumulating in the tubs?

I didn't technically "cook" my rocks when I started my tank a few months back but I did cure them for a few weeks in tubs in my garage with skimming and water changes. As a result, there's a bunch of nasty stuff that is now in my flower beds instead of in my tank. What did that hurt? Is it bad advice to tell someone they can possibly benefit from this?

Maybe if they stopped calling it "cooking" people would forget all the previous nasty debates and just consider it. Call it "washing" or "cleaning" maybe. That's basically what it is.

And for what it's worth, there are apparently a bunch of old timer reefers who cure their rocks in a similar fashion to cooking. The only thing really new about it is the name. IIRC, the guy who got Eric Borneman into the hobby has always cured his rocks similarly. I'll see if I can find the thread where he mentioned that.

No, there is nothing wrong with cooking as an approach to curing live rock.

What is fundamentalist about this thread is the guy obviously should go to the shipper and demand a refund and see what the shipper can do for him. But some people here are so interested in winning the BB war, that they can't even give this basic advice.

It's a simple formula:

Place an order + order gets screwed = call to shipper

Nothing to do with curing methods, nothing to do with religion, just basic good common sense. Next time, let's try and share it.

I don't mean to take this thread on another tangent, but you are incorrect about the USPS. I worked for the United States Postal Service for 3 years. The mail only stops delivery from your local postal annex on sundays in the US. Even then, and this is a very little known fact, overnight sent on saturdays are still delivered on sundays. Believe me, I've recieved many a startled look from people when I appeared at their door on sundays to deliver overnight. The most important thing to remember is that mail in the system doesn't stop moving on the weekends. Sunday's mail is held over for Monday and holiday mail just the same (10 holidays). I've never seen a boxed item "curtailed" for the next day, even at xmas when it's utter mail madness. (On extra heavy mail days, bulk and third class are held in the office for the next day.)

I personally would never use the USPS to ship something living.

Trippyl, I actually did bring this up briefly, and I stand by it. Do you do a lot of shipping? I do, for eBay, and have shipped coral & live goods before, and have also been shipped the same in turn. USPS offers absolutely no guarantee of when their service will arrive if it is standard shipping OR priority, you can read this if you go to the post office and read the fine print. They only give an estimate of "about" how long shipping by either service can take... and they will be the first to tell you that priority mail usually is 3-5 days, but can often take a week or more, and make no guarantees.

So then you say.. what if the package was insured? This is another headache. If it was insured, I would definitely have the shipper (who yes, is the one who would have to initiate the process after a complaint) who goes down and fills out a complaint form for lost or damaged goods. Being that it was delivered (and no mechanical damage, only a little slow, again, no guarantees on time), you would be out of gas there. Once, I had shipped out a small glass item, which was insured and well packaged, to an eBay customer. The buyer, a nice guy, told me it was smashed, and sent me a package that was completely dented from the outside, not at all how it was sent, and very obviously the result of mishandling. I went down and did according to their protocol. You know what they ended up telling me? That they needed proof that it was packed up properly, by the buyer having to go down to the PO and showing the materials used for packaging. It was only through a long process that took months, and persistent hounding from both buyer and seller that anything got done, and the refund was small. I say this not to discourage anyone from complaints, I am a strong believer that if someone says they are going to do something and does it wrong, resulting in breakage of your merchandise, you should definitely take action on principle. However, this was not the same case, being that USPS has such loose guarantees with most of their services.

You could go put it on the seller if HE gave you an absolute guarantee of when it would arrive (in which case he should have shipped it by a reliable guaranteed arrival date method, such as UPS, FedEx specified delivery services), but it doesn't sound like that was the case. At any rate, you are not really that much worse off, and I'd argue, if you paid for cured rock, you weren't worse off at all and got what you paid for. Let's save the fighting and making mountains out of molehills for where it belongs... in the forum.
