Be very afraid, very very afraid. Controllers do nothing to protect the tank when the heating tube corrodes and releases stray voltage into the tank. WON Bros heaters fail in numerous ways.

This is a great thread. Giving us allot of variables to consider for different setups. I have used a number of the precautions described here but not all. I am using Ebo Jager 200w heaters (4) in my sump hanging from a holder that keeps the tops out of the water ( I did this to prevent a failure of the seal or a short in the wire). I set all the heaters to turn off at 80 F. Then connected them all to a DC8 connected to an AC Junior. I set it to turn them on at 78,78,79,79. It turns them all off at 80F. This gives them a little more progressive heating and prevents them from all turning on at the same time presenting a smaller on load for the switches. My temperatures stay between 78- 80. I could have used titanium heaters to eliminate the breakage concern, but as it is they are in the return section of my sump and there is little work done in there. I suppose they could break if there was a huge loss of water causing the level in the return section to drop below the heaters causing the controller and the heaters to all turn on then a huge recovery of water covering the super hot heaters causing them to break. I know the glass is tempered but I guess it is still possible. I will say that in the past before setting my heaters up like this I have had several Ebo Jagers fail both on and off. I keep this in mind and check the function of each regularly. Again great thread. Here's to nice constant temperatures!
