Actualy for a 40 breeder you should be in the 60 to 90 Watt range with LED's dependent upon what corals your keeping and type of LED's used.

I don't know about all this par talk it's beyond me. I mean I understand it but I'm big on if it's not broke don't fix it! I have one 120w 14k aquariumleds fixture over my 40b and I go sps all over the tank from top to bottom. Mine are working great for me.

see there is plumb crazy now lol and yea that's why I'm saying one is pleanty for a 40 breeder the light that plumbcrazy uses is comparable to a 250 watt mh so they say.... One of these units or the taotronics unit cover a 30 by 18 area so I think one would be fine ... You can always get one now and one later if you feel u need another

I am running 1 TaoTronic over my 40BR. It is more than enough for SPS in most areas. I put my softies/lps on the edges and have not had any problems. I'm thinking 2 would be an overkill. The only problem I have is retaining red in my SPS. I'm doing some research on other forums to find a fix for that.

TROPTEA help please

Troptrea, I would like to ask you to make a suggestion for LED color mix on some lights I am getting closer to buying.
http://www.eshinesystems.com/aqua/4g...ium-light.html
They are Bridgelux and I can swap out colors for no charge (UV is $1 each). How many of each blue type LED and each white type LED, as well as any other color would you combine. This will be for a 60X24X18 tank and 2 of these light fixtures which are 24" long. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Edit: Also what degree lens, 30, 60 or 90?

Plumbcrazy,

What is up with the Mollies? Algae/Cyano control? Very cool tank, and nice lights.

which leds do you guys recommend for a sps dominant tank? looking to get a 220g or a 270g (72L x 30W x 24H) or (72L x 36W x 24H)

looking to try a cheap solution before i head the expensive way and drop $2k-$3k on lights

thinking of getting 4-6 fixtures depending on tank size.

Also is a dimmer important? i see most don't have a dimmer but in my opinion its a necessary feature.

Yes when I first set the tank up I had a very bad hair algae problem. The mollies where added then and I just kept them. They are easy to keep and don't bother anything. With renovations going on in the house I've had some fish go carpet surfing, so it keeps fish moving in the tank too. Thanks for the kind words about the tank.

honesty on a tank that large I would build my own (DIY). anything 180g and under is a great candidate for these black boxes (4 boxes tops). anything above and I definitely would go DIY - especially if your wanting dimmable.

I ordered 2 of the Taotronic leds lastnight. I can't wait to get them. They have to be way better than the Marineland reef capable that I'm using now.

You have 48 LED fixture. And you have to use Bridgelus LED's so I would look at a combination like

12- 4,500K Whites
6 Cyan
6 Atinic Violets 420 nm NOT the Ultra Violet LED's
12 or 24 Royal Blues (only 12 if you can get 12 blues in the mix)
12 Blues if they make them available to you.

Total Color should be slightly bluer than than a 14,000K but not nearly as Blue as the 20,000K look. Also wif you go with Royal Blues it will actualy have more of a blue purple look than an actual blue look.

For lenses I would go with either none or the 90 degree lens. The sharper the lens angle the more possibilities of shadows and with multi colore the shadows become colored and obvious.

I went with eshine because I could alter colors and optics etc. they were very helpful up to the sale. Afterwards is another story. This has been pretty common when people get their lights and need repair. I will not do business with them again and my experience is what makes me wrote this to your post. Look around on this site and you will see more stories like mine.

I have read some of your post, and quite a few others, here and on other sites. I am sorry things have not worked out as well as they could have. But the majority of people have had positive experiences. I read you had 1 bad LED and that is not too bad---the fact that it took to long for a replacement is unfortunate. You said you are not sure if you got a mix of royal blue and blue and can't tell the difference, and you are comparing them to blue Crees. I don't know how to take that, since I have never really examined a bridgelux royal blue vs. a blue vs. a Cree blue. Perhaps you are right but do you even know for sure. Like I said, I am sorry things did not go smoothly for you. I just feel that, short of DIY, that these are the best lights with the quietest fans. Since I found a local to buy 2 with me his price for the regular bridgelux without a controller is about $180 each shipped to my door. This is right in the ballpark of the black boxes but I feel these lights are a little better. Yes it is a bit of a gamble but I can still get 2 lights with controllers for $150 less than 1 Radion. Thanks for your reply. Hopefully you will not get to say I Told You So!

I def have no problem with the quality for the price. All the reasons you mention is why I went with them. 1 bad led and no different colors are something I can deal with although I specifically ordered 2 different blues and didn't get it. I am more talking about the service afterwards. You have no recourse. Then they ignore you. I still like the fixtures, and the pricing can't be beat. I just appreciate a little more honesty and effort to make things right. I hope you have better service and experience. In all the searching i did before my purchase, I hardly found anyone who

Thanks bud. I hope so too. I might have considered the black box style but they are under 16 inches long and the eshine is 24 inches long. I think I will get better coverage on my tank with 2 eshines and probably would need 3 black boxes. The solar simulator and quiet fans were a factor too. Thanks for the good wishes and taking the time to share.

Thanks a lot Troptrea. Honestly have no idea about cyan and Atinic Violets 420 nm (what is nm?). I am going to email them and see if they can do this color combination. I also am going to insist that they list the color combo and lens angle on the invoice they send---hopefully avoiding any confusion such as what phishguy experienced.
Do you really think that 12 whites and 36 other colors is enough white. Believe me, I have no idea what I am talking about, but it seems like going from standard 50% white 50% blue to only 25% white is a lot less white. Will it still be bright enough----might be a dumb question but just wondering.

I have a single toatronics 30b25w over my 70g cube (30x30x18). Lights everything well, and all my lps, ricordea and leathers are happy.

I did replace the fans with quieter fans
