The funny thing is that I was really wanting that storm feature, but I didn't want to pay $1000 for a Profilux Controller yet. I actually bought my light set up from Aquacave on there Black Friday 10% off special before I had a chance to read that the new firmware had incorporated the storm feature. It's still on back order but the new shipment should be in on the 27th. I can't wait.

I was originally going to use only one but I didn't want to fry anything by turning the light up really high just to achieve good coverage. So I added another module. Now I have to get someone to build me a custom canopy so that I can keep my little Blue Spotted Jawfish from jumping out. We shall see.

solid, the ai site has the new firmware available; 14 timers and thunderstorms. easy as pie. i bought their controller along with their lights the exact way you did and saved the 10% from aquacave. it's primitive in the way you program it, but works fantastic.

First I would like to say great thread. Well I have been using 4 400 watt Radiums supplemented by Vho's on my tank for over a year. Before that it was 4 250 watt radiums. At this point in time I am looking to enter into the LED arena. Any help would be greatly appreciated in helping me decide on the amount of units. Here is a little information on my system.
It is 10' X 30" X 30". Now the way I have my rockwork is a little different than most. All the rockwork is placed in the middle of the tank so in front of the rock is roughly 8" inches of open space and about about 6" in the rear. These tunnels have done a great job with flow for me in addition to maintanence. In essence its a verry long island that spans 9 1/2 feet in the center of my tank. So i need proper light in the middle area(16") of rock. My corals consist of Light hungry sps from the top down to half the depth of the tank(15") and lps on down to the sandbed. I have no issues with hanging height. I can hang these as high as 2ft above the tank if needed. When I called technical at AI they said I could probably get away with 5 units becouse of the way my rockwork was concentrated in the center. He said you could always add another 5 in the rear if there was too much shading. What do you guys think ?

Thanks

After reading through most of this thread I am still unsure of what I need. I know AI suggests 1 unit every 12 inches. I am building a standard 180 that is 6x2x2. It will be heavily stocked as a mixed reef. How many units will I need? I plan on them being suspended about 12" above the water surface in my canopy. I am hoping I can make due with 3 at that height. If there is anyone out there that is running a similar sized tank that can help me out that would be great.

I just ordered my AI Sol Blue models from my local dealer last week, should be in tomorrow or the day after.

Would this new firmware from AI controller have the storm feature?

It should, but either way you can download from site.

Is there another way to hang these light fixture? or do you have to use the hanging kit from Ai?

If you look around you will see that there are a ton of people using them with their own custom hanging options. I don't know yet for sure but it looks like it is a matter of only 2 screws per module. I will try to post some pictures when it comes in.

just from my 3 week experience, aquatidadvisor, it seems like you have the perfect arrangement for a horiz, not parallel, 1 rail setup. most of my rock is as yours.
kmu, the storm doesn't come standard, but firmware does have it.can anyone explain why you'd want to use this feature, except to impress friends??!! i doubt corals need it, and fish hide during the lightning flashes. simulated cloud cover, may seem more "earthlike" and may trick people into thinking fish have a more natural enviro, but i doubt it has any, any effect on our critters. a fish will bite a baited hook, get released and do the same thing, fish see their fellows being hauled to the surface and continue to feed. their memories are pretty short, so if there's lightning or not, it's soon forgotten. admittedly, it looks very very cool.
solid, kataro, there are two horizontally mounted screws that fit into the AI rail slots. but there are also 4 smaller screws, 1 on each corner, to hold their wiring. i think that might be the way to not use their rails.
i just love mine. zoa colors are amazing. doesn't do a lot for clams or my fish, but shrooms chalices, etc under blue and their royals are not from this planet. get ready, cause they make nighttime psychedelic!

i have 8 fixtures...

i changed 4 over..the other 4 i will leave with the 40's to see if i see any difference...

visually i see lttle or no difference so there is no appearance of less light...

I would want the storm just to have something different instead of the plain old ON/OFF lighting scheme...

after looking at the 40's vs the 70's further..i do notice a slight difference...the center is missing a little more brightness/pop ... the 40 has a little more...

Does anyone know if the Sol Nano would be sufficient for an Elos Mini?

took par readings...

currently 550-600 par above water line..

450 up high in tank
250 midway down
150 on sand level

before the 70 lenses it had hot spots of 850-900 above water line and it translated all the way down...

i am now running 80% white, 75% blue, 80%royal blue and fixture is now 10 inches high instead of 18 before...

the light spread in the tank is also better now , seems more balanced...

I was gonna just get the hanging kit from Home depot and hang it from my ceiling. Pretty much just tie the steel wire around the screw (will be getting a new screw for the fixture so I can actually tie it)

Though this will prevent me from lowering / raising the light to some extent.. would dimming the light be enough for the corals? I'm thinking of putting this thing probably 16" or so above my 12" tall tank

So...the readings above were taken at 100% for all three lights at 18" above the tank?

Thanks for sharing the data.

Most places don't have them in stock until first weeks of January. Best bet is to order them and wait the two weeks.

I'm still trying to figure out how many you would need for a tank? I have two that I am thinking about replacing the lighting. 150 gal 48x30x24 and a 233 gal 72x30x24.
