Oh man! This is the way I see it...i give the guy mad props for putting up a reef "show". Some, I do stress SOME of his information is correct...about 10 or 15 years ago. He just hasn't updated his knowledge, which is a shame considering he runs a business. What I gather is the guy has a bit of an ego, and believes his way is the ONLY way. I saw one episode where he felt that live rock do not belong in a fish only tank. Huh?? I can't even get through an entire episode. From the handful of vids I've seen, he always says something that I find too annoying for me to continue. An let's not mention that "radio" voice he uses in his narrations....aaaarrghhh!!

He definitely has the Obama voice...you know...where he talks...and then stops for a minute...and then keeps going...but stops again because everything he says is the next most important thing he's ever...........said.

i'm just wondering if i am the only one who sees this creepy similarity.
maybe they share some of the same gene pool. crazy, uninformed, full of them selves, along with some huge need to be in the public eye. if LA fish guy just shaved off his skullet and jim cramer stopped dying his hair they would look like brothers. this to me explains all the crazy he puts out and then some.

Has anyone tried to get a hold of him and directed him to this thread? I remember going through all his episodes a while back and thought that they were recorded in the 80's I didn't realize that they are recent.......

and now i wouldn't buy buy a unitank, i have seen them but i wouldn't because they tend to be narrow and a sump is much easier to service.

I think this guy is hilarious....yes alot of the info he gives is out of date. I too thought the videos were from late 80s or early 90s when I first saw them. I do agree with most that he needs to man up and accept the fact that there is alot of new equipment on the market that would make his life alot easier.. As far as all you people thinking he should convince his customers to do a real reef....thats crazy. 90% of his customers are dentist/ doctor types. Basically he services alot of businesses. If you go to his actual website you can see all of his videos. There are very few people or businesses out there that could afford the expense of having someone maintain their actual reef tank. Just think of how much time you spend with your reef tank every day. Do you honestly think that all that could be done in a one hour service call once a week. The reason he recommends for most of his customers to use faux coral is because it is a cost savings to them in the long run. I know if I ever own a business that displays a tank I would have fake coral. No way I would risk 5 grand in corals lives in a tank that is flocked upon by children throughout the day then completely unattended for the 16 hours your not at your business........also if you watch all of his videos you will see he does quarantine all of his fish and offers his customers a 14 day guarantee so long as they feed according to his instructions...........

2nd the only fake coral I have seen in one of his service tanks was in someones home are you refering to the dead coral he uses? bleaching DEAD CORAL (not fake DEAD),.. and by dead I mean no longer living, has to be cleaned all the time and takes time to prepare for an aquaium, that is time wasted, not metion DEAD CORAL is expensive too, and so is rubber coral. So my question is how much do it cost the customer for him to do all of the extra cleaning that he wouldn't have to do in a FOWFR combined with the cost of the DEAD CORAL he might as well have bought live rock, I dought there is much if any cost saving in the long run. 3rd I can test my water and do a 30gal water chang in my 90 in 30 to 40min. Also I spend more time looking at my tank than messing with it, I just don't need to, but I do understand why a newbie would want to mess with his tank all the time, I did too my first year in the hobby.

I had a FO tank back in the 80's with all dead coral as decoration. Took all the deco out maybe 3-4 times a year for bleaching. At least this way I was only responsible for killing one batch of corals. Bioballs in a wet dry and chemically treated tap water for water changes. Worked great for at least 5 years. Algae was never an issue since light drives algae and in a fish only tank you don't need much. Because of all that it was a very energy efficient system that allowed me to keep a few SW fish and not suck up the retirement fund.

His main site is at www.lafishguys.com. He's got a lot of videos there. He's been servicing my tank for almost a year now and has done a great job. I'm a busy hobbiest so often times I may not be available to deal with my tank when i'm away so he comes and helps me with it. He also has an abundant supply of Catalina salt water and that's the only water I use for my tank.

I have to agree with jbird69. Do I agree with some of the things he does, no. Is it my business, no. He is just trying to make a living like the rest of us. If the customers are not happy with the results they'll dump him.
Badwrasse why the constant need to bash the guy and anyone that has anything to do with him. Some of the things in this thread were funny, now it's just getting sad.

I'm not a big fan of the of the filming method he uses (camera angled upwards at him) or the music, but I guess it provides an interesting insight into the aquarium maintenance business.
I would be more interested in him just going about his normal business and sharing his customers tanks and what he does to take care of them rather than have him explain to me how a wet dry filter works every other episode.

now I am repeating myself but i'll say it again anyway IMO the reason his customs dont dump him is because most dont know any better or dont't care.
