Hey JM. Depends on what type of urchin. Some are reef "safe", some are not. Can you describe it?

Check out this guy out. Hatpin urchin. scientific name Echinothrix calamaris. NOT reef-safe IMO if it is, in fact, the one you have.

Echinothrix calamaris - out of the three pictures in this class it looks much like the middle one just less spines.

I have a coloured sea urchin. Most are reeef safe but they will eat coraline algea as well as knock lose corals off the rock.I placed mine in the sump and he has done a good job off eating my grape calerpa. It beats me ripping it out by hand. When it eats enough of it I put him in the tank for a bit till it over grows then place him back.Yes Yellow eyed kole"killer Tang" or bastard fish as I call him.He is mean.I don't know why.My purple used to fight with the yellow tangs for the first couple of days then he slowed down.He sometimes chases but he mostly leaves them alone.During feeding time he tends to push the others but everyone gets the fair amount off food. Those tangs are pigs but my maroon clown takes the cake.

Yeah, I've seen these guys available at the LFS's. Beautiful and intriguing, but to quote WWM, "...may prey on cnidarian livestock..."

Hey Gisho,

Nice looking couple. Best of luck to the two of you. My wife has cousins that live in Simi Valley. One is a nurse and her husband works for one of the blood banks. My wife is a surgical tech. After hearing all her doctor stories... give me High Schoolers any day!

What are some of the best LFS in your area? There aren't too many here and the variety and health of the stock is sometimes lacking, not to mention the prices. It's only an hour and a half to Simi.

Hey Maybaer. Thanks. I got lucky with her. Which hospital does your wife's cousin work at? Simi Adventist? I agree, dealing with physicians can often be worse than dealing with high-schoolers.
Surgery is an especially volatile and stressful environment for sure. One of our surgeons here threw an instrument at a surgical tech or nurse recently and got in big trouble.

As far as good fish stores in Simi, we only have two. And to be honest, they both suck. The stores closest to me that are far better are Tat's Tropical Illusion in Thousand Oaks (about 15 minutes from Simi) and a bunch in the San Fernando Valley (about 30 minutes south of Simi), namely Mark's Tropical Fish in Studio City (although overpriced IMO), Aquarium Center in Sherman Oaks on Ventura Blvd. (good weekly specials on sps) and Aquarium City in Canoga Park on Sherman Way Ave.

How far are you from Fremont? If you ever get a chance, go to Atlantis Aquarium, a store that is a sponsor on this site, (atlantisaquarium.net). I got my male cross-hatch trigger from them. Tell Jolie Gisho sent you. She may remember me. Great selection of healthy livestock and rarities.

Hey Gisho,

I don't know what hospital she works at. If you follow sports, her two daughters are the top Cross Country and Track runners in Simi. The Sperry girls. I bought my remora from Aquarium City. I got it real cheap probably because it came with a Rio 800. I need to get a maxijet for it.

Thanks for the leads on LFS's. I'm probably going to try an online place soon. I have heard that saltwaterfish.com is pretty good. So...we'll see. Freemont would be quite a drive. At least 4+ hours from Bakersfield. I grew up close to Berkeley. I like to go back anytime I get a chance.

Last weekend I was at a LFS in Huntington Beach. They had some real reasonable prices. I bought a medium Star Polyp colony, Green Open Brain Coral and a medium Green Striped mushroom colony all for $57 (tax included). They are real close to the beach on Beach Blvd.

heya Maybear. i know one of the stores out in your area. reason for the prices is cause they drive out to 104th street to pick-up the livestock @ the wholesalers. and bakersfield is kinda far ;p. i dont think the prices would be that much different in Simi either.
