Interesting going through the hole thread (wow I have eye strain :0 )
Something I notice is most people running their Ai's at much reduced amounts than myself. currently running up until recently whites at 80% and blue at 100% (this is the SOL V2 fixtures not the new SOL Blue). My greens are great but my blues struggle, so I increased the whites to 100%, the only effect I have seen is the greens are getting much lighter and the blues starting to come through. But my dilemma is this, why am I having to run so bright OR am I doing this the wrong way and actually the browned out blues are due to too much light? It would be interesting to see other users percentages and height above water figures and also what effects on colour they are seeing? |

I run my 6 units over my 240 5" above the water surface. They run at 100%/100% for 2 1/2 hours a day and ramp up to and down from that point throughout the day. My blues are great, I only have one green acro and he looks nice too (now that I think about it I need to get some green). If lps count the green on my frogspawn is great. I recently got a hold of a par meter and have a blue and white tenius thats been getting blasted with around 800 par for nearly a year, I looks fantastic.

interesting thanks. I ramped up to 100% on the whites and noticed my corals started shedding so that was clearly too much for my 24" deep cube.
As I am Par-less right now I think I will go back to 55% and tweak each week and see what happens. I just wish i could get the blues and pinks out of these corals. Green is rocking Here is a vid when the lamps were at 80% white and 100% blue for a good 4 months http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6belGt_NxU |

Glad to hear people are getting these units up to 100%!
I have 3 units mounted sideways 12" over my 125 (72x18x21) and have left my ramps at 68blue and 52 white. I have been afraid to go any higher since I don't have a PAR meter and I don't want to fry my corals. Sounds like I can safely & slowly start increasing my intensity to 100 blue and ?? white. I like tmgrash's way - just having it max intensity for 2 1/2 hours and ramping the rest of the time. I was thinking about going this route at some point.

All 6 of my AI Sol Super Blues have 70 degree optics on the outer four pucks and 40 degree optics on the inner four pucks.
Mystery solved. :-)

I have a 36" x 24" x 16" tank. I was wondering if I could get away with one 12" module since my tank is shallow. I'm planning on hanging them from the ceiling as well. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Any of you guys happen to know who has AI Blues in stock right now? Been calling around and nobody seems to have any. Suggestions appreciated. I'm on several back order lists at this time. Jerry.

How would these AI's work through a glass canopy?

I must have gotten lucky. I place my order with Premium Aquatics just after Christmas and had them a week later. They got a big shipment in a few days after I ordered. Here they are over my 180.
To fit my canopy, I cut the rails into 18" sections and made aluminum brackets to hang them. I've only been running for 3 days and I'm ramping up slowly from 30% (today is 32%). Still some neatening up to do to get the cabling more organized, but they are functional. No light spill anymore. Just about every photon goes into the tank. The top of the canopy is open, though, so I do get a funky reflected light display on the ceiling. This is a very different look than I had under 10k MH and VHO actinics. A few corals don't look as good, but some look dramatically better. Anything that flouresces bursts with color. I didn't know my zoanthids were so good looking.

The only complain that I have so far is what the lights have done to my Red Planet. It is no longer green with deep red polyps. It is completely a dark purple color, polyps and calcium base both.....lost all of its green. I am trying down low in the tank now to see if it is just too much PUR/PAR near the top. Everything else seems to love the lights. I'll take some pics this weekend and post.

wickedfish: Thanks so much. I hope that the piece that I placed on the sandbed will color up once again and then I will move the other other one lower.

Spoke to George yesterday at ReefGeek and they were not able to satisfy their backorders with the units that were shipped to them so I'm on the waiting list for the next shipment. They have no idea how many and just when they will be shipped from AI. Jerry.

I just got mine yesterday from Premium Aquatics. Love them. Just thought I share that I hooked one of the modules up to a kill-a-watt meter and at settings 30w 30b 30 ryl and it was just readying about 15 watts. Just seems crazy.

Just curious, what size are people interested in? New version is currently set at 6" which is double the stock height. Material is not going to be the cheap plastic either. Most likely black anodized aluminum. I also have my rails anodized for a stealth look.

Ok guys... got my Sol today. Will be doing a PAR comparison next week to my 4x24 5tho Tek and will post results here. A couple of questions... first does anyone know those PAR FTS I see all the time always seem to have fancy graphs and what not pointing out PAR a various heights and whatnot. Is that just someone editing with text or is there some sort of software people are using to chart it. Secondly my thought is to try to match the PAR of my current fixture with the SOL... is that ok or should I still be dialing it down to keep from scorching? And lastly my tank is 24x24x10 rimless shallow reef... does anyone have any specific PAR tests they want me to run for them? I will have the PAR meter for one day so I will try to accommodate anyones requests...
Thanks, Mark |
