Getting good growth with the 2nd of two downloadable programs. I love the light around 1pm and would like to have that a bit longer. Goes a little later than I'd like.

thinking of pulling the trigger on the 6200's, how many will it take to cover a 72x24x28? .... my dealer is saying that 2 will do it, but after reading all this i am not so sure that they will. it will be a SPS/LPS reef... please let me know your thoughts. its a lot of money and i dont want to be dissapointed.

I would start with 3 and unless you have a heavy SPS population you should be good there

The technical size is 36x36" tested independently by Dr Sanjay Joshi, of course this does not take into account for aquascaping, you are right on the limit of 2, so depends on budget you cna start with 2 and build from there but 3 is optimal.

Mike (Mshur) has 6100's they have slightly different spread.

Agreed.. I think 3 will give you better coverage and greater possibilities for coral choice and placement..

Michael

There is a thread in the Eco Tech forum about radions losing PAR over time quite quickly. Just wondering if GHL has done any studies on this and do they have any figures?

Units that have had lab tests done on the them typically had been running for long period, the results have always been consistent and not shown any losses. GHL use different LED's although I am surprised and quite disbelieving to any claim a radion loses PAR over time.

There are many back bedroom LED gurus out there, getting a bit like the amount of hobby chemists in this industry. I take very little interest in anything unless its proven in a lab.

The Mitras has been proven in a lab and also in a leading Germany university that studies illumination.

I have been following this thread for a while FYI. I have to call BS on that one. I would believe you if you said something like "very small losses due to highly efficient cooling design". No par losses at all, come on man. I am by no means a lighting expert but I am a somewhat effective web searcher. I can find information from a major led manufacturer that discusses brightness losses which would translate to par losses.

I think it would be wise to research how LED's work in regards to output they have absolute no degradation parts. Before getting into any argument over this it really is worth researching yourself such things.

The only catagorised loss is due to operating temperature the hotter the LED the less efficient the output, GHL Mitras uses temperature dependent cooling, meaning it is variable, it also uses 4 fans.

So mirkus, are you saying that the par loss/emission loss is due to excessive heat only or are there other factors involved?
I know zippo about led tech... I am just asking..
I assume that the radions have variable speed cooling fans as the Mitras do..
Maybe not.. But if they do, I'd be curious to know what else plays a role in led degradation..
If it is only due to excessive heat, I think (assume) the Mitras have that covered..
