Steve, I think everyone on this forum can agree with me that even though your advice is monetarily free, it is invaluable to the people dedicated to this hobby. Without this thread, I would have absolutely had issues with stocking my tank AND making sure it was disease free. So thank you for your dedication, expertise, and willingness to help. It is very much appreciated.

Always a pleasure. If you are successful, I am happy.

Hi Steve. 75g reef and 30g sump. Current stock is:
2 Occ clowns
Flamehawk
Bicolor blenny
Firefish
Kole tang
Melanurus wrasse

It's a newish tank, and i'm adding noori every other day.

What do you think about me adding an emerald crab? 2?

I am not a fan of emerald crabs since once they get big they are a problem.

Hi guys,

Long time reader, finally got out of the Marines and got my own place to create my set up.

Heres what I was thinking:

I'm going to have a 100 gallon with a 20 gallon sump, working on making a the sump 40g.

Blue Dotted Jawfish
One SpotFox Face
Blue Tang ( I am working on my 200 Gallon build as we speak)
Clownfish

And some corals and anemones down the road.

Am I overstocking? Understocking?
Any invert recommendations?

I was looking at a puffer that I could add, or a cowfish?

Thanks for the help along the way!

Blue Dotted Jawfish Do best with peaceful tank mates and cooler temperatures; require a substrate which is fairly deep
One SpotFox Face
Blue Tang ( I am working on my 200 Gallon build as we speak) please do not get a P. hepatus until you have an 8 foot tank especially with another algae grazer (foxface)
Clownfish depends on species; gold stripe maroon are very aggressive, A. percula and A. ocellaris are relatively docile

And some corals and anemones down the road.

Am I overstocking? Understocking? bioload is fine
Any invert recommendations?

I was looking at a puffer that I could add, or a cowfish? a long horn cowfish is an expert level fish and will not be coral safe; also highly susceptible to parasites

Thanks for the help along the way!

Thanks for the info, so would I be ok with just the Foxface? And assuming that how would you rate my bioload? Could I add more fish?

I originally tried them for getting rid of bubble algae (they did not do anything to help) and I think I kept a couple for about 2-3 years and then removed them. It is has been about 10-15 years ago so I do not remember. In general, I dislike crabs except mutualistic crabs which inhabit coral.

bioload is low. Foxface is fine but ideally should be added once the tank is mature (they graze on algae) because if they get hungry, they are not coral safe.

they go after fish. Almost all crabs are opportunistic feeders

Thanks so much for the help Steve!

I have a few more ideas I thought I'd run by you if you don't mind.

Blue Jaw TriggerFish (Male)
Royal Gamma
Orange Tail FileFish

Inverts:
Blue Hermits
Cleaner Shrimp

As I am unable to go backwards in this thread, it is always best to provide entire stocking plan and tank size. My memory sucks as I have literally done tens of thousands of these. In general I favor snails or hermits but not both.

Oh sorry I tried to quote but it wouldn't let me.

My Tank is 100g with a 20g sump

Stock plan:

Blue spotted Jaw fish
One Spot Fox Face
Ocellaris Clown
Royal Gamma
Orange Tail File Fish
Blue Jaw Trigger (Male)

Cleaner Shrimp

Coral and Anemones at a later date.

No problem. Just copy and paste.

Stock plan:

Ocellaris Clown
Royal Gamma
Orange Tail File Fish
Blue Jaw Trigger (Male) this is not safe to inverts (such as shrimp and CUC) and small fish; really needs a larger tank; when you start adding aggressive fish that can eat tank mates, it is best to start your own thread in the the aggressive fish forum. I do not do analysis of those.

Cleaner Shrimp

Coral and Anemones at a later date.

Great thread. Im building an 800 gallon tank and while Id love to do a full reef, I really want to keep angels - blue face, french and the like. Are these compatible with anemones? My kids really want nemo in the tank.

Can I keep a tank full of angels and anemones and clownfish?

In addition what about shrimp? coral banded, cleaner, fire shrimp?

Any trigger that are compatible? Id love me a clown trigger but I know he will destroy corals and anemones. What about huma huma?

thanks for the great thread.

If you want large angels, that will preclude anemones. I would not advise any triggers in a community tank. Figuring out which large angels would go together will not be easy.

Okay, this was my old plan:

Fish:

Ocellaris Clownfish x2
Firefish
One Spot Foxface
Red Head Solon Fairy Wrasse
Starcki Damselfish
Mandarin Dragonet (after the tank has been running a year)

Corals:

Starburst Polyp
Cauliflower Colt Coral
Toadstool Mushroom Leather
Open Brain Coral

What I am now curious about is if I could swap out that wrasse and insert a Whip Fin Fairy Wrasse in its place?

(I believe I cannot have both safely.)

A whip fin fairy wrasse is aggressive but probably can be swapped out with the originally planned C. solorensis wrasse

Thanks a lot for your advice, Steve.

I don't want an aggressive fish -- so I'll stick with the original plan and go with the red head solon fairy wrasse.

My wife's folks live on Solon Road -- I guess it was meant to be!

Hi Steve, just wondering if these fish will be compatible

75 gal DT
30 gal sump
FOWLR(Not Aggressive, just want to start out easy with just fish)

1 Christmas Wrasse
1 OCC Clown
1 Flame Angel
1 Sunset Butterfly (Chaetodon pelewensis)
1 Pearlscale Butterfly
1 Lawnmower Blenny

Am I overstocked? Can I add a leopard Wrasse down the road?

This plan is fine but you would not be able to incorporate a leopard wrasse due to copepod competition.

I have a 55G with 65lbs live rock 30lbs live sand and a 7 inch dragons tongue grown in the tank, 400gph canister filter with UV sterilizer ( filter contains course med and fine pad, ceramic rings , activated carbon, and bio balls) CPR bal pak 2r+ skimmer ( skimmer return packed with chaeto and a led light strip to keep it alive) I also wrapped my 2 1300gph wave makers in carbon filter pad for added filtration. I currently have 2 clown fish, 1 damsel, 1 hippo tang ( all fish are juvenile) I want to get rid of the damsel for a yellow tang and add a scooter blenny . would be a total of 5 fish. Opinions???

You should get rid of the damsel and hippo tang (which requires a much larger tank) and not add any tangs. The scooter blenny would starve to death.
