I am thinking of getting the $160 LED.
My tank is 8' long. Can someone with experience on these LEDs suggest how many will I need?

I was trying to save money by buying LED lights from a grow store. I know, I know... I can hear the chuckles now... The owner of the grow store also worked at a LFS store that I frequented. The light maker (straight from China) that was making the owners lights for his "plant" customers also apparently made aquarium lights too. Well the owner convinced me to buy 2 of them for $600 and it was the worst mistake I have ever made... for my tank at least ... I wasn't as concerned about the loss of 6 bones as I was the damage it did to my tank. I had a severe algae bloom, corals that LOVE intense light were bleaching out and I really learned my lesson. DO NOT GET CHEAP LIGHTS is all I have to say. It may work for some and not every case is the same so please don't blow me up with posts about how you made your own lights or you purchased cheaper lights as well and it's been bunny rabbits and flowers for you because it's a case by case scenario. But I have talked to a lot of people that made the same mistake or similar, that regret every bit of it. Save up and spend the money to get sufficient lights that are actually from an aquarium specialty source is my advice.

I have been using a 55 3 watt ebay fixture for a couple months now. Works great. From skimming thus thread I have seen a ton of empty opinions, meaning people who have no clue what they are talking about mixed with people whom have never even see the pendants in question in person. Don't be swayed by people that have never even touched the light. Even the ebay fixtures have a return policy buy it and if you don't like it return it. The most you will be out is 25 for shipping.

The $160 led pendant that runs 3 watt bridglux less is good I have it on my tank and enjoy the 14k color it is putting out.

well i've been doing some more looking and reading. It seems the older 1w ebay LED's are the ones giving people fits. The newer 3w fixtures seem to be working out better.Thats just what i've noticed

was considering these as they have cree leds and a 3 yr warranty, just wish it had moonlights but not a huge deal i guess....I would like to hear if anyone has picked any of these up. I have a lot of other hobbies where the chinese have made cheaper products and have done real well and saved me a lot of money, so Im hoping for more good products from china at cheaper prices.
globe,i'm looking at these also.I'll give a call and see if I can get any more info or pics. You can't beat a 3 year warranty

Hi all,

I just thought I would chime in here. I know someone that has purchased the last generation eshine lights and has had them in his tank for over a year. He has definitely had success growing SPS in his tank (including acros), in fact that is how I met him. I got some good sized SPS frags from him. The eshine lights can be bought with the exact same LEDs as the aquailluminations, which have seen good success in growing SPS. The big difference will then be the optics. But these seem to be fine too. He has been really happy with the eshine lights, and is going to buy more. I'm going to be upgrading to a 150 gallon tank, at which point I'm going to go with the eshine lights.

I'm so glad I found this thread! I just went searching and on alibaba they have the new eshine fixtures for sale and for pre order. The new systems are all Cree updated LEDs and are dimmable manually with separate dimmers for white and blues . Has cooling fans heat sinks hanging kit. The 120w unit was only $199 . Insane . Half price of similiar fixtures. Waiting for email back on better price and shipping.

reeffan: could you provide a link to those please?

to everyone else I found www.aquariumledlighting.com and they have a 120 and 240w lighting; they have 1 2 and 3w leds in the 120w fixture;
My tank is a 230 gallon reef, that is 25" high; which lights should I look at getting? The 3w 120w ights or the 240w light

Thank you in advance.

you got them from eshinesystems.com? Are you getting good coral growth?

Which wattage did you get?

Are they dimmable with the sunrise/sunset effect?

Thank you for your help.

The Eshine website seems to indicate a new 120W light in the works or coming soon. Anyone knows anything about that?

Does anyone understand the difference between the 240 watt LEDs and the 120 watters? Does the 240 watt just have more bulbs?

Then they are advertising 1, 2, and 3 watt individual LED so I'm not sure which route I should get, any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

The 120w unit was taken out of production accordIng to one of their reps. As far as my growth, it's a bIt too soon to tell as its only been a few weeks since I changed to LEDs. I did not get the controller and to be honest I don't knOw how necessary dimming really is

I posted a lot of info about eshine LEDs previously. I have not gotten around to writing up a full review because 1) I cannot find my digital camera 2) my cell phone pictures suck 3) I am fighting a lot of GHA due to phosphates from hell (dry rock leeching).

Non-the less

Here is a before and after shot and a little summary.

I got a 24x3w 4g fixture from eshine I want to say 2 months ago? I got 12xroyal blue 3xblue and 9x cool white LEDs with 60* optics.

My tank is a 25g truvu nano (acrylic AIO cube-ish).

Lights sit on the rails they sell so they are about 3" off the water.

I currently have a green toadstool leather growing, frogspawn & torch all growing on the sand and they are happily extended. I have two small red/orange mushrooms growing on a rock about 3" off the sand and they are generally happy looking (not over extending, generally open and flat against rock). Lastly there is a neon green candy-cane which has been stagnant, I attribute this more to my husbandry. The candy-cane has been getting covered in GHA, I got super glue on one head when I bought new glue that was more liquid than anticipated etc.. I recently moved it high in the rocks so you cant really see it in the picture because of glare and it has been looking a lot better.

Overall with all lights on the colors look nice, there is a slight blue shadow along the shadows cast by the rocks which I attribute to 60* optics and having the light sitting a few inches off the water. Their new designs have lights arranged in circles instead of rows which would be better, I was tired of waiting so I grabbed the fixture with row lights.

The before is with 2 CFL bulbs from home depot, one was cool white one was warm white.

Before

After

Yea i know that bottom picture looks like ****, but you can get a good idea of how the color shifted in the tank with the blue lights and also how the coral is looking both extension & color wise on the sand. I added a skimmer, began scrubbing with a toothbrush and dosing vinegar and the algae mess is getting better.

Overall I think the fixture is great, with only blues on everything glows like crazy and you are going to be hard pressed to beat the bang for the buck. If you have the money then yea, I would get a fixture with a dimmer so you can have more control.

SO, i figured it would be a good to compile a list of these "chinese" led's so people could maybe state which ones they have seen and had experience with to better help people like me who are in the market make a decision.

1) http://www.ebay.com/itm/120-Watt-Aqu...ht_2152wt_1179

2) http://www.ebay.com/itm/BLACK-Aquari...ht_4729wt_1238

3) http://www.ebay.com/itm/120-Watt-AQU...2#ht_594wt_946

4) http://www.eshinegrow.com/aqua/60w-c...ium-light.html

5)http://www.eshinegrow.com/aqua/aqua-...ium-light.html

6)http://www.eshinegrow.com/aqua/3g-50...ium-light.html

7) http://www.aliexpress.com/product-gs...olesalers.html

Feel free to add to this list if you have tried other LED's.

And also, I'm setting up a 57 gallon tank (36"x18"x21") and would like any recommendations on what you think would be good to light this tank for a softy/LPS tank. I was hoping to stick with just needing one LED fixture.
