Beautiful build. Is that a Giesemann Aurora I see? Looks sweet. Your plumbing there certainly puts mine to shame haha.

I'm planning to upgrade to RS 450 from my 75 gallon tank. Not sure if anybody ask you this question but, it appears you have a basement below your aquarium. Did you had any reinforcement to the hardwood floor when you put the RS450? How do you determine it was safe to put a 110+ gallon tank?

My only concern if I go bigger is I need to build a beam support which I hate, because my basement is already finished and would cost $$$. Thoughts?

Hello Broadfield,

I'm following your system from Portugal, i love all what you do.
Yesterday i've ordered my Reefer 425xl. I will receive it in July. Also ordered Jecod DCS5000 return pump, Jecod Rw8 circulation pump and Deltec SC1660 DC skimmer.
Later i will have to buy another circulation pump, but for the start i can go with this.

My biggest problem is in the lightning system. I will have only soft and LPS corals and some fishes, of course. Do you think that with 2 AI Prime (EU version) i can have sucess or it's better one Hydra 52HD? There is so many things, and all of them beastly expensive. I also consider TMC iLumen 1200 LED or Maxspect Razer 420R 170w. Here in Portugal it's very popular Ocean Revive Artic 247. Can you give me some help.

Regards,

Ricardo

Could you share the details of how this is done? Is it a lot of trouble? Can you post pictures of how the holders were modified? I'm planning on getting a Reefer 250 and based on my current plan and the size of the sump, removing the the filter socks vertically would be really helpful.

I've searched through this thread and others, so forgive me if you've answered this before.

Do you have a nice flow with the pumps in that position? They are the 10 model or the 40 model?

Ricardo

Great build.. and being a car guy at heart.. I love the car shots mixed in. That being said, I will keep that going with some car porn of my own.

That being said, how much sand did you end up using in your 450?

Excellent job on the build thread. I was hoping to download your AI prime settings from the dropbox link. Unfortunately, they are no longer available - any chance you could share those again?

Sorry for the lack of updates. I have been beyond busy with work, my personal business and my wife's business. I would of answered all of these questions, but I didn't even receive notification of the replies... I just assumed nobody was paying attention to this thread lol.

I'm loving the Giesemann fixture... as I should for the money I paid Much better coverage than the Primes and I'm seeing much better coral growth... like a lot better coral growth. Once things settle down a tad more, I will be shooting my next short update video. Which I look forward to since it will be the first video with the new fixture. In the meantime, here's a couple of iPhone images:

Your tank is so sick. You've gone through some light changes and each option isn't cheap. I have a Reefer 450 also, which I'm just getting started, in fact replaced the sump with a Precision Marine and hard plumbed. I will post pics later tonight.

I have a question about your return. How did you size the loc-line? Can you explain your loc-line setup. My return is just too strong and need spread it around.

Parts needed:
  1. First remove the Red Sea fitting out of the end of the return nozzle... it's just pressure fit with Teflon tape.
  2. Then simply wrap the threaded section of the NPS fitting with about 10 wraps of Teflon tape.
  3. Next twist/slide into the Red Sea nozzle... it should go in somewhat snug.
  4. Then pull it back out and wrap it again with about 10 wraps of Teflon tape.
  5. Go ahead and twist/slide it back in... done.
  6. Lastly, snap on the Y fitting and your selection of Loc-Line segments and nozzles.

Thanks for the detailed information about the Loc-Line. This will really help me. I'm not going to lie, I've been following your thread and going to mimic my right side cabinet just like yours. I got my new APEX on its way.

As previously stated, I replaced stock sump with Precision Marine and hard plumbed the entire thing. I also have a custom ATO from Precision Marine. I'm a little OCD and want underneath my tank to be clean.

I'm going with 2 Radion XR30's for my lighting. I love the Giesemann and seriously thought about going that direction. I know this sounds ridiculous but didnt want the power cable hanging down the tank.

Keep the post coming. Thanks again

Hi, can i just confirm what size Loc-Line you used for the split return? In an earlier post you said you glued on a 3/4" Loc-Line Y adapter and from there it was whatever 1/2" Loc-Line stuff you want to use, but the parts you listed above in a more recent post are all 1/2" pieces? Just want to clarify as i intend to make the same modification to my 450. Tank and setup looks great, this thread will be very useful when i come to set mine up .

The parts I listed above are the no-glue solution!... so that's what you want

I never liked the "old" Hydra spectrum... which is the reason I went the five Primes. The Hydras were only on there for a month or so.... they were off of my old tank. The Aurora is amazing, plain and simple. Great growth, great coverage, no shadowing... just really expensive

I keep seeing other's "see-through" tanks and love the illusion of depth it provides when it's up against a lightly painted wall. I said "F it" and yanked the black film off the back of my Reefer lol. I only had two concerns before doing it: 1) I really didn't want to see cables hanging down the back... would kind of defeat the purpose of doing it and 2) is it going to look goofy with the black overflow still in place. I figured out a way to hide the powerhead cables and light fixture cables... so I went for it. I knew there was nothing I could really do about the overflow being black. But I came up with an easy and slick way to hide the powerhead cables going down the back.

IMG_6805 by Toby Broadfield, on Flickr

For the light fixture, I simply routed the cables along the backside of the fixture, then dropped the cables down behind the overflow. For the powerheads, I bought some aluminum 90 degree stock, cut to length and then painted them black. Since the Reefer series use black silicone for the seams, the painted black aluminum blends right in... it basically forms a cap around the end of the tank. I simply double stuck the aluminum trim to the corner of the tank and left just enough space for the powerhead cable to pressure fit inside. It also allows me to just pull the cable right out for powerhead cleaning etc.
