Water Levels
To increase the water level in my tank, do I reduce the flow from the tank to the sump?
What about increasing the water level in the pump chamber of my sump?? Ted

If you have herbe overflow then increasing the height of the emergency drain will increase the water level. Sent from my STV100-1 using Tapatalk

I have a 90 and the water level 2" below the rim. I'm planning to make some silicone inserts to put in the teeth to raise the water level a half inch or so.

Thank you for the comments.
I'm new to the rimless tank. I'm used to having the water level right up to the top. The water level in my tank is about 1.5 from the top. So it seems to be within the norm. It'll take some getting used to. Ted

As to increasing level in the return chamber, this is a function of overall water volume in the system. As water is evaporated, removed, added, the only place water level should fluctuate in a properly designed system, is the return section. Set it up so the max level of the ATO is about 1/2" below your baffle height and this way your sump chamber remains constant. |

More fish??
My tank has been up and running smoothly for almost 3 weeks.
My PH is at 8.0, Ammonia is at 0, Nitrite is at .25, and Nitrate is at 10. It's almost the same as it was last week. This weeks test was with ghost feedings last week and the addition of 1 fish at the end of the week. Here is my situation. I have a 16 gal tank that has my remaining fish (Watchman goby and 6-Line Wrasse). My wife need the space the tank is in. The tank is getting a lot of outside light that I cannot control. I told my wife that I could probably swap the fish over in early February and tear the tank down giving her that space. However, I'm concerned about the algae spike in the tank and the overall health of the fish. I perform weekly 5-gal water changes on the tank. That part of the house has become a very high traffic area. I know it's frowned on, but would it be a show stopper to swap the remaining two fish over to the 50-gal cube? Ted

nitrates arent an issue as they can be handled with water changes but still having nitrites is a concern. I would dose ammonia back up to 2ppm and see if it clears in 24 hours. If so you should be good to go (0 ammonia and nitrites in 24 hours). Otherwise you can still operate but you need need more frequent water changes to handle the ammonia and such and monitor it daily.
Similar concept to what many of us do with our qt tanks as they are not cycled but we have to swap water almost daily to maintain zero ammonia and such... It wouldnt take long for your dt to stabilize. It is not ideal as it can stress the fish and I would NOT put corals in there yet but it is doable.

he has side access he built as well for the stand so he covered that aspect. Its not ideal but he has access to it from the side.

I don't see any reason not to add them now as long as you know they are parasite free. An algae outbreak in the old tank shouldn't mean anything with regards to the fish. What is making concernted about the health of the fish? |

pfan,
like soulpatch said I have full access to through the side of the stand. Once I figured using 2x4s for my stand was going to eat away at the space inside the stand I planned front and side access. The concern is that as the time on my light is dimming the light in my tank around 9PM, my wife has a bunch of photo lights turned on in the room till about midnight. There are multiple people waling in and out of the room while they are taking pictures for my wife's home clothing business. My concern is that the bright lights and constant movement when the room used to be dark and quiet may not be good for the fish. I suspect the extra light is the cause for the green algae bloom on flat surfaces in the tank.

This is the side view of the stand.
This way, from the side, the skimmer is front/left. Easy in. Easy out. Ted

I thought I would post some finished pics...
Earlier in this thread I posted some of the construction of this stand. I can't take all of the credit for the ideas, although some are my own. A little plumbing and wire management A place for all of the electronics....finally Bare Bottom Easy access to filter socks and media bags. Gear. Inside the stand finished. Finally Filled and has some tenants.... Hams for the camera Thanks for looking...

Going to vent a little
So in stead of ordering my Apex from a big box store, I'm convinced I should order from a locally owned Mom and Pop store. Turns out it cost me $80 more than the big box store. Figure in bonus reward points and its cost me $100 more. Apex was ordered last Sunday. Hasn't shipped yet. Really??? Lesson learned.
But not yet.... Wanted to order a nice LED from online vendor. Vendor listed the light as backordered. When the vendor lists the LEDs are in stock I place my order, on Monday. I see no shipping information on the website. I call the vendor. LEDs are not in his warehouse yet. He's going to ship the LEDs when they arrive at his warehouse...... sometime next week. Ok Lesson(s) learned. Sorry Mom and Pop. Won't be doing business at you shop any more. Sorry LED guy. Won't be buying from you anymore, either. ARGH!!! Big Box stores. You haven't failed me yet. Please don't start.
