I don't think you'll have a problem getting information here. Good luck with your transfer from fresh to salt....

Hey Everyone,
I'm new here, been on another forum for a couple years now.
A fellow Central Reefer encouraged me to join here today by using the statement, "Reef Central is for more serious enthusiasts!"
I've been keeping SW tanks for prob about two yrs now but I have been keeping FW since I could remember.
I currently work at my LFS, I am in a slow process of opening my own marine business and working on my BBA-MBA.
I hope to gain lost of knowledge and maybe share some of mine here at RC

Siddique

Hello, I am new here

Hello all! My name is Janet and I am completly new to the world of fish. I have never had any fish tank, fresh or salt but I am now the proud owner of a 144 gallon half circle tank. Since I have no experience and since my childhood goldfish never lasted more than a week, I thought it would be wise to do as much research as possible before setting up my new tank. Any and all advise is welcome. I do have a few questions if someone would be so kind to help me with. First, my new tank is going into the basement which we are renovating now. Since we have the luxury of building anything into the wall we are going to put an ro/di system next to where the tank is going. Since we can pretty much customize how we are building the walls, any suggestions on other equipment to put behind the walls? What are thoughts on automatic topoff systems? Is it worth looking into? My last question for right now is how much time realistically will be spent per day/week/month on tank maintainence? All books say very different things. Thanks for your time, I look forward to chatting with all of you!

ATO's are great to keep the tanks salinity stable. As far as time working on the tank, I would say you are going to spend a lot of your free time cleaning, tweeking, maintenance and getting your tank set just right for the first 3-6 months, however once everything stabilizes it doesn't require much time. I think that I spend a good solid 3 hours a week maintaining my 125 tank. It's non-stop even when you don't want to be in the same room as the tank you still have to give it your attention. The good thing is, that the wife enjoys the hobby as well so we share the burden.

Hello from Dallas...

Greetings all, I've been keeping aquatic critters on and off all my life. I'm back into the hobby after 10 years away.

This time around I have a perfect place for the tank, it will be integrated into a built in bookshelf in the family room. And this time around, I can afford to do this tank the way I want it.

Plan is to build a tank to fit my space, not sure which it will be acrylic or glass, but it will come to me. I expect it will be in the 60 gallon range, I like the idea of a cube, and the space will support that.

Where I begin will be where I personally think is the core of any reef system, the lighting system. In fact, it was my recent installation of LED lighting in the kitchen that got me thinking. "I bet these would rock on a reef". So first will be an LED light system, DIY of course. From there... well we'll just see.

Now then, off to read more about LED systems....

Dan from Dallas...

Dan,
LED lighting are still in its infant stages and the jury is still out on if they benefit SPS corals. The concept is great but I have to wait for more data before I dump $800 on a DIY project like that.

Fair enough, but going the DIY route will save me $$, as an alternative I may go with T5's but not MH....

Rose Anenome shrunk up and doesn't look good

Hi,

We are new to the hobby - have had a 100 gallon tank for about 2 months - bought a rose anenome about a month ago, and over the past two weeks it has shrunk up considerably (doesn't look bright, and looks about 1/4 of the size it was). It moved around alot the first two weeks, now it in top/back of tank. Any ideas how to make it healthier? Water temp is 80...
