How to Mod a Koralia Power Head

post earlier on in the thread by Foreigner

"Give you an idea if you have an sps tank or like tons of flow. Purchase a regular Koralia #4 and also purchase the algae free maxijet upgrade. Once you get them, look in the maxijet upgrade kit and you will see a magnet, and 2 impellers. Grab the large white impeller and pop it out, turn it upside down and place back into the shaft. This is done to reverse the way the impeller will flow since the Koralia magnets and the maxijet kits upgrades are made to rotate in opposite directions...reversing the impeller assures the pump will start rotating in the right direction. The impeller is set by pressure just make sure you push it all the way in. After this little reversal is done, simply replace the stock koralia impeller...keep the koralia metal shaft! and insert the maxijet kit magnet along with the white impeller you just reversed. Replace the koralia cover and submerge in water at least 3 inches. You will be insane at the amount of flow this produces, I would say around 2000+ gph...I did this with 2 koralia 4's and they have been running for 2 months and stop and start with no problem...just do not use on a timer or wavemaker...absolutely no tools necessary, the impeller pops out with prssure from your fingers, just be careful not to brake any of the blades.
This produces equal flow of TUNZE pumps and even vortec at a fraction of the cost...HOWEVER, MAKE SURE YOU USE THE ALGAE FREE maxijet upgrade. Good Luck "

Stomatopods are an ancient group of marine predators that are only distantly related to other more familiar crustaceans such as crabs, shrimp and lobsters

Gluing Frags
Here's what Tswifty uses. You have to be careful, because most plumbing epoxy contains metal in it. He was unable to find a suitable material at Lowe's, but found this stuff for $2.99 at Home Depot which has worked well. He believes it even states "aquariums" as one of the applications on the label.

Thats a great job Capn. Your fingers must be calloused from typing. Good information and all condensed in one thread.
Very impressive.
When do you have time to teach?

Capn, you are going to give me a bigger head than I already have. I am also a legend in my own mind which means I have smack myself around once in a while, especially when I make a mistake and one of my fish starts growing two heads.

Before you smack yourself---
Have you always had steady success with growing corals.
It seems like my tank has been in a funk since xmas---I been slowly loosing corals:
2 flower pot coras
thread heads of torch for no reason--new heads were growing at the same time
numerous zoos
recently---pagoda coral on the way out---only the outer rim is alive
full grown acropora----was given to me sick--came back really good and is dying off
lord acan is slowly disintegrating
hammer coral I've had for 2 years went in a week
frogspawn---is down from 6 heads to 2 in less than a week

with the exception of the gonipora I have had these corals for over 2 years

is this just a natural occurance or is something going on?

my gut goes with flow issues---too much turbulant flow from koralias---I have about 5000 gph in the tank.

No, it is not a natural occurance except for maybe the flowerpot corals. Something is going on. As you know I lost most of my corals, some ten years old in a week due to zinc orthophosphate.
It sounds like you also have something in your water and water changes are probably making it worse because it is in your make up water as it was in mine. I would check your resins, for some reason, sometimes mine don't change color even when they are exhausted. (thats how I got into trouble) I would also run a lot of carbon in a canister in an attempt that carbon will remove what ever is the cause. Carbon will remove metals. I assume the temp is not over 88 or so.
Corals are not very forgiving and when they start to go, it's not that easy to turn them around.
Good luck, let me know how you make out, but don't keep changing water with the same water you are using until you check the resins.
Paul

Paul, it's a coincidence you should say that--I just changed out my ro system to an ro/di and have been using the new water for only about a week

I also changed out my berlin skimmer to the msx250 a couple of weeks ago but have only been able to use it with one pump. The service of the US company I dealt with is absolutely terrible to Cdns

Capn, run a load of carbon in there. Maybe your water intake problems (if you had any problems) are fixed but whatever was in your water is still affecting your corals who (I would imagine) absorb unwanted metals into their tissues. The damage is done but maybe you could reverse it with better water. Corals will come back but the dying parts will still die.

would a series of water changes also help?

I have an extra phosban reactor so I will run two of them with carbon for the next while
