To Reef Central Seems like there is a rash of people converting over to salt from fresh. Which is a wise choice. You'll love the new found hobby. If you have any questions with your set up please ask away. Thanks for joining RC

To Reef Central I really enjoy starting a new tank. Especially when you’re drilling and plumbing it all from scratch.

New reefer from Iowa
Want to say Hi to everybody out there on this great site. After years of freshwater I have moved into saltwater. I have a 90 gal tank with a lemon drop angel, two clowns and a six line wrasse. The tank has been going for about 7 months now. I have probably 60 pounds of LR in there along with some soft corals. Can't forget my cleaner crew of crabs, snails and shrimps. Some huge mushrooms, some zoas and two leathers. I just added a RemoraPro C skimmer. I have joined our local reef club, GIRS and am getting more addicted daily!

To Reef Central If you can do well with the 10 gallon then it only gets easier with the bigger tanks. Check this out it'll answer a lot of questions.

Hi all,
I'm new to the saltwater tank...I have a 50 gal tank and put in the blowers (2), heater and sugar sand and live sand the other day. Then, I arranged about 30 lbs of live rock on the bottom and added a premixed saltwater solution provided by the experts at a local fish dealership. I added the water and boom! Instant cloudy water! It's been a day now and the sand is starting to settle but I have this foam at the top. What is it? I don't have a skimmer or lights yet but was told I'd be okay for a couple weeks. Can I just scrape this foam out? Help! |

To Reef Central Yeah the film is just a bi product of your sand. A skimmer will help get rid of it but since you won't have one for a while you can manually remove it.

Hello Everyone, the SW experience is all new to me. I have had FW for years and now that I have a steady job I wanted to get into SW. I just started my tank on 10Jan10. I have a 55 gallon, two Maxi jets with wave maker, Remora C Protien skimmer, HOB filter, after cycle two 54 Watt t5's, 80 lbs of LR so far (fiji) and heater. I have not added substrate yet because Im really not sure yet which direction Im going to go. This site has already helped me alot so I figured it was time to join the community.

To Reef Central For substrate I would definitely use sand.

Been into fish for about 30 years now, mostly FW some SW years ago. Just got into reefs 3 months or so ago. Cycled it with live rock and live sand. Cucled in only 3 weeeks which is amazing to since it took 8 weeks last time I did it. I have a 125 mixed tank with 2 hanging filters and 2 canisters with live rock in them. Also built a denitrator to try out. There is about 100 lbs of live rock in the tank. I look forward to the discussions on this forum.

To Reef Central have you given any thought to having a sump/refugium instead of the canister filters? Are you going to have a protein skimmer?

1: you can upload your pics directly to Reef Central server. (stay with me here) Click on your name (right above your avatar, it'll give a drop down menu) then click on 'view public profile', over on the right you'll see a box labeled 'album' click on 'show all albums' and then you'll see a button that says 'upload picture' and then you just browse to the location it is on your computer and upload it. the downside to this is that you are limited to the size of the pic that can be uploaded 2: for that reason people start another profile on a photo website (I like photoshop.com and upload the pics to that site. Now to actually load a picture to a thread. (this works for both ways) When replying to a thread you'll see a square shaped icon (yellow background with mountains and the sun) click on that and paste the url to that box and click 'ok' the picture will now show up on your post. HTH
