two vho actinics at that time but enough with the past

now for the fun stuff

setting up a 92 gal corner tank from aqueon
lights are on the way hamilton cebu sun with 250w MH 10k bulb and 4 t5 actinics.
skimmer is on the way but i forgot the brand it's what my buddies recommend at the store costs abou 450$ and rated for up to 450 gal..
until i get tunze power heads i have 3 max jet 1200 with a wave maker plus
a 4th that i haven't decided on yet and of course the return pump in the sump.

because of the shape of the stand all i can manage to fit is a 24"l by 12"l sump iether a 20 gal,25 gal or 30 depending on the hight i can get my hands on.
i want to instal glass walls for bubble trap and refugium if possible but the refugium would only be 12" square !!!!

i'm planning on richards TB 90 gal package that includes 180 lbs of LR and 90 lbs of LS plus all the cleaning crew after the tanks cycles..

as far as fish go i was planing on going with what i had in the past
purple tang
yellow tang
hippo tang (maybe) they get big
2 clowns (tomato at the time) also managed to raise about 300 babbies
six line wrass
and maybe a few small ones haven't decided on yet

corals will be a mix of sps and lps and a softy like the yellow leather i always liked and then who knows as the time goes by....

my first post i did have some under another user name years back but can't remember what it was and the password
been out for 4/5 years

Steff, your 125 gal was probably a long tank and you were able to get away with the tangs. The 90 gal would probably be suited for one tang at best and probably the yellow tang as it is the smallest as an adult.
Also, with that amount of rock in the display system you have really cut down on the necessary swimming room for tangs. I would suggest you either cut back on the 180 lbs of rock or spread it out in the system--eg in the sump and refugium section.

Okay here we go, 55 gal with ~60 lbs LR. What I want and currently have on hold. 2 maroon clowns and 1 yellowtail damsel. Right now in my tank there are 10 trachus snail, 5 red leg hermit, 1 coral banded shrimp, and 1 sea cucumber.
For the moment, not sure if they will stay, 2 condy. If the condy go then a BTA will arrive shortly.
Also, could I add some coral frags without to much load?

Proposed fish only set up 90 gallon 48 long 24 tall 18" width
Lighting led and two t5 combo lighting> wet dry filtration with a skimmer and overflow box and 20 gallon sump a 2" sand bed and 3 powerheads for flow not adjustable.

I would like to eventually add a clown tang, a yellowtang, a pink face wrasse or a gold stripe wrasse, some clean up crew and maybe a humu humu trigger with last fish going in 3 months down the line. Please advise if compatible and if its to huge of a load and tang police where you at??

I have a mix reef 90 gallon established, and I am planning on a 250 gallon in wall set up for late 2010 for a home for the tangs and trigger when to large for them to stttreeeeeetch out.
I like lion fish as well but which guy on the list would I deduct, all criticism welcome.

okay, i've tried a couple places to get some feedback so i'll come here too. thanks for this thread, btw.

my tank is a 40B, with about 40-45lbs LR and a ssb around 2''.
what i'd like to keep is
a pair of some variant of ocellaris clowns (bw or naked)
a starry blenny and/or an orange spotted blenny
a trio of longspine cardinals
a yellow or bluespotted watchman goby

so, what do you think?
some of what i'm questioning is the thought of keeping both blennies and the thought of the goby in that mix as well.

thanks CAPT HYLINUR

you are corect, my former tank was 48"x24"x24" with less rock then what
i'm planing to get !!!!
this helps me come back to my original taughts and will go with aprox
120 lbs give or take depending on the reff rock work i do..
i realy want to have swiming room the front of the tank spans 52" in the front and it's 27 deep..but being a corner set up !!!
will most likely do as recomended and rethink my tangs might replace one of them with easier to care for anthias...my budies here in ottawa have some real nice ones at the store but fishes are not for now,i should have my tank running by next week end..
RO unit is going to get here monday..lights and skimmer next week.
plumbing is all done up,pumps all set up..getting there

thanks for your expertise

coral frags do not contribute much to the bioload of a tank

I would not recommend that you add a damsel---they often grow up to be bullies and are very difficult to catch.

If you are going to upgrade to a 250 gal then those fish you chose should be okay

Your very welcome Steff. I agree that with a corner tank you should rethink the tangs and go for the anthias.
Keep us posted with updates of your progress---good luck

Thanks capn. Went without the damsel and with two ocellaris clowns instead of the maroon. Also changed the damsel to a singapore angelfish.

thats great because you might have had problems with the angel and the more agressive maroon clowns

"The Singapore Angelfish can be challenging to keep. Some acclimate well, while others hide constantly and do not eat. Providing a quietly-located aquarium with non-aggressive tank mates and plenty of hiding places may help. A minimum of a 55-gallon tank or larger provided with live rock for grazing will also help provide an optimal environment. The Singapore Angelfish is prone to nip at stony and soft corals (sessile invertebrates) and clam mantles. It will also graze on microalgae, filamentous algae, and diatoms.

I'm in the process of setting up my first reef tank (5'6'' x 2'8'' x 2'4'', 950 litres, that's about 250 gallons I reckon) here in Finland and I'd like to hear your comments. I will be keeping LPS and SPS corals and various invertebrates, and the fish species I've planned will include 1 Zebrasoma flavescens, 1 Acanthurus leucosternon, 1 Pseudocheilinus hexataenia, 5 Gramma loreto, 1 Pygoplites diacanthus, 1 Salarias fasciatus, 2 Amphiprion ocellaris, 1 Ecsenius midas, 1 Blenniella chrysospilos, 1 Centropyge bispinosa, 1 Cenropyge loricula, and perhaps 1 Siganus vulpinus (yes, I know that A. leucosternon can be aggressive but I'm willing to take the risk...I think). I know this may sound boring to experienced reefers but as this is my first tank, it's all new to me!

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I will have about 100 kg (about 200lbs I guess) of live rock and ATB Medium cone skimmer. I also accidentally left out one fish species I've been considering, Chrysiptera hemicyanea, and I'd especially like to hear your comments on this as the info on this seems to be somewhat contradictory...

A couple of suggestions:

I would not put the azur damsel in with that group of fish you have.
The 5 royal gammas --with that size of tank will probably be okay--but they all need their territory. This will probably clash with the damsel or stress it out making it take out its stress on the other fish.
Simililarily the 6 line wrasse is another territory control freak---I would substitute it with a more peaceful one such as a fairy wrasse. The six line has a history of not getting alon with other wrasses so if you start with it then adding other wrasses later can be a problem

The coral beauty and flame angel are both dwarf angels unlike the regal angel.
It is problematic to add 2 dwarf angels to the same tank.

Add the blue tang first and the yellow tang last or add them together.

The foxface is a good choice--great algae eaters and they get along with most tangs

The rest of the fish on your wish list, clowns, blennies etc will be fine IMO

Heres what i curently have, 75 gal display 5 gall fuge, 10 gal sump. 65 lbs live rock 40 lbs live sand, and a coralife superskimmer 125. i have 2 false percs. 1 neon blue damsel who is kept in check by the clowns. 1 pseduo cromise, 1 lawnmower blenny, 1 purple firefish. and 1 yellow tang. My rock work leaves plenty of room for the tang to get his laps in. Im looking to get another tang to grow in the tank for the next five or six years untill i move and upgrade to a 6ft long tank. If i where to choose between a hippo tang or a blonde naso which would better suit my need, and remember this is going to be temporary houseing. I also realize im inching towards a heavy bio-load. I know tangs can be agressive towards eachother but what do you think is this possible or should i go something else. Im open to any sugestions

We are moving a large blue tang out of our 110 g community reef into a fowlr tank because he is too big - breaking corals and deliberately pushing our clam around the tank. My girlfriend and I love his personality and brilliant blue color. Any suggestions for a good substitute that is fairly large and blue as well as community reef safe (lps/sps/shrimp/small fish)?

I am sure this is not what you want to here, but you must care about fish because you posted this. Tangs are very active fish and in the wild they spend all day swimming looking for algae to graze on. Keeping the small tangs in a tank shorter than 60" and the big guys in anything smaller than 72" is in my opinion not right. These fish LIVE to swim and taking that away from them is not ok. I am not saying get rid of your yellow tang, as its lucky to be in a 75 gallon tank and if you gave it back to the store it would most likely end up in a smaller tank. Just don't crowd him any further with another tang.

5-6 years is not temporary housing. A good rule of thumb is you should never stock your tank with the idea that you will upgrade later. There are plenty of other fish that would be ok for your tank like a nice flame angel just don't get another tang.

Thanks for your advice capn, it's nice to hear that on the whole I'm on the right track here... I'll consider your suggestions, already having second thoughts on the 5 grammas - maybe a pair would do. So you don't think that the Salarias and the Blenniella are incompatible? I don't plan to get other wrasses, so I'll probably go along with the 6 line.

I have not been able to find anyone stating that the salarias and Blenniella are incompatible---do you have information supporting that?

I agree 100 per cent. You can probably get away with a yellow tang but not with more than the yellow tang. Yellow tangs can become very agressive and territorial besides being open swimmmers
