I agree it can become overwhelming. I have lots of time to spend researching in the evenings. I'm new at the saltwater gig so I'm reading about anything I find or need. I'm also super addicted to it now so that helps.

They boomed really bad for a while, then the jellyfish slowed down but the hydroids were everywhere. Everything avoided the jellyfish. Every time one touched me I didn't feel it but it left a little red mark LOL.

Can anyone ID this critter? I'm assuming it's some type of mollusk/bivalve. Wasn't sure it was alive until last night when I saw it completely closed up. Here's a close up and one that shows more of the whole rock he's on. Came on a piece of aquacultured LR from the Gulf of Mexico:
also noticed this limpet for the first time yesterday: unidentified snail:

Your first picture is missing, a close up of the bivavle in question would be good. They are all harmless filter feeders.
The limpet is a harmless grazer. The snail looks to be some type of whelk. Most of the whelks are predatory so I'd remove it.

that's weird...I can see 4 pics when I look at the post.
If the whelk is predatory, he's made it 4 weeks without killing anything. May wait and see on that one. Thanks.

Close up and snail pics aren't showing for me (1st & last).
Not sure what kind of ID you're looking for on the bivalve, there aren't many that have common names so usually you just get "it's a bivalve" LOL.

Some kind of clam, probably on its way out due to the cycle.

Aptasia
I unfortunately found my 1st aptasia this morning. I have looked high and low for others, but found none. I'm assuming from reading I should hit it with some Kalk paste?
Also noticed some greenish polyps growing in some of red turf algae. Kinda hard to get a picture as in back of red cap montipora. Assuming they are bad and should be exhumed as well? Or leave alone? Tank is 9 months old and mixed reef tank, 90 gal bowfront. Sincerely, David |

Not sure what the greenish polyps may be, perhaps hydroids. I've had some that had a greenish tint to them before. Do they look like this?

So, I have had my tank set up since last September. A few months ago, i noticed this odd bubble thing attached to one of my live rocks. It its smooth and soft to the touch. It is white and purple in color and appears to be a filter feeder. Does anyone know what it is?

Sushi girl. The "greenies" in question do look like that. Should they stay or should they go now?
Sincerely, David |

Clam or Oyster?
Hi There. Does anyone know what this is. It was advertised as "Purple and green mushrooms on rock" from LADD. I noticed last week that the rock wasn't a rock.
Slightly more open: Side view: There's definitely tissue inside and it reacts to light (more tightly closed under bright light).

It's a clam, I used to have one like it on a christmas tree rock. Very cool!

Thank you. That's what I figured. I was a bit surprised when I discovered it. Do you know if it has any specific requirements? Should it be propped up (as it is currently) or placed on the substrate? It get's a fair bit of indirect current where it is.
