Not all puffers can eat inverts, shrimp, crabs, etc. They may nip, and disturb, but that's it. How can a 3" fish eat a 2" shrimp with a 1/4" mouth?

I wouldn't at all be surprised if they eventually, once in a while nipped at shrimp, or crabs. They may nip a shrimp enough times, that its alive, but immobile, where the puffer just starts to attack it, eventually eating it. With enough hiding places, I believe it can be done.

I'd rather have a Tody puffer in a nano than a six-line. Six-lines can get super aggressive and territorial in a small tank. Of course this doesn't apply for all, but they are notorious for chasing tankmates. At least a Toby won't cause chaos in your tank.

I'm bumping up this thread just because I've seen a couple people suggest tail spot blenny's and have a question about them. Been doing a lot of research on them and am just wondering how likely it is that they'll be coral nippers? All the threads I've read seem to go from one end of the spectrum to the other, from saying they're the best fish in the tank to decimating corals.

Tank doesn't really have much in it yet but I'd like to have some large colonies of Euphyllia eventually.

I have a TSB. LOVE IT. Tons of personality, great tankmate, very fun to watch. I'd like a few more just like him, but I need to research how they do with others of the same kind. Strongly recommend the TailSpot Blenny

+1 on TSB. Mine is in with LPS, SPS and zoas and does not bother them at all. However, they are pickers in general. Mine goes to the unscraped back wall of the tank and picks off all the copepods first thing every morning. He also agressively picks at the algae on my rock, so I suppliment with nori in an algae clip.

I'm in the midst of beginning to stock my BC 14 but after reading this thread I'm starting to feel guilty about adding anything to it because it seems so small (I've had 90's and 120 gallon tanks in the past)...I really wanted a 6-line but judging by comments and posts, I'm thinking against it...How often do these firefish jump? As long as I've kept tanks (since 1999) I've never kept one of these and it seems like a good choice...

thanks... BTW, my cube has stock hood so it's covered...

i have 2 fire fish gobies on a rimless bc29cube. they haven't tried to jump nor do they seem like they want too. keeping them happy with lots of food and stable environment probably helps!

i also have a tailspotblenny with absolutely no problems with my corals. mixed reef but not TOO many corals like some.

You could do a Pink-Streaked Wrasse (Pseudocheilinops ataenia) instead of a 6-line. Still a lined wrasse but with a lot less attitude. Better for a nano IMO. (Though my last 6-line was super well behaved in my old 55g so it can depend on the fish as well.)

When I was helping to clean tanks at a LFS, a tailspot blenny would charge my hand and try to bite my fingers! I thought they were cute until that experience. Of course, it didn't hurt, but I guess I am pretty jumpy and I can't help but react when something attacks my hand -- which results in a lot of spilled tank water.

In general, I'm not a big fan of blennies, because I think that they are mean SOBs. But I had a linear blenny once (not in a nano, though) that was an interesting fish -- unfortunately I accidentally killed the blenny when I removed a piece of live rock that I had never before seen the blenny on -- but that day it chose to hide within it somehow.... So, if you get a blenny, make sure you check anything that you take out of your tank, so you don't make a stupid fatal mistake like I did.

yea thats the one problem with it.
but if you could get a local LFS to get one I think it would be worth it.

i really think blennys show the most personality of all nano fish, started with a starry blenny, loved it, had lots of personality and was beautifuil fish, but had to get rid of it for some reasons so now i have a tail spot blenny and its the one fish ive ever talked to, hes like a puppy to me. just wondering, how would a ghost eel do in a 25-30gal tank? and are there any other wrasses that are reef safe that can be in 25-30gal other than the mean 6line?

I've heard of a LOT of people keeping both different species of flasher and fairy wrasses in their larger nanos. I was really wanting to get a McCoskers with my last fish order but all the females were out of stock and didn't really have the budget for a $60 fish.

for firefish owners--besides coloration and price, what are any obvious differences between the standard magnificent firefish and the purple firefish...it seems as if the top pointy dorsal is taller on the former than the latter species...

Pretty sure that's the major difference besides color. The regular firefish has a large pointed dorsal fin and the purple has a shorted and rounded dorsal fine.
I liked the colors on the purple better so that's what I got as my first nano fish.

Another vote for False/True Perculas.

Dartfish make great nano fish, very passive.

Are there any eels that would work in a nano?

There really aren't any eels that are good candidates for nano's. Some stay rather small compared to others, but the bioload is huge since they are fed meaty foods. Can soil the water quickly.

I have read that clownfish are good nano fish, but what's the smallest tank that a clownfish could go in?
